Do anybody know of any movie/comic/book that can be described as a gothic horror-ish and take place in Japan or a Japan inspired setting?

I saw Valerian today. It's garbage. Like TPM, the visuals and designs are amazing but it has wooden dialogue, a very transparent plot, two main characters that are totally wooden and have no chemistry... really, a laundry list of bad to outweigh the great imagery.

It honestly did remind me a lot of TPM in its setup, and that's even ignoring the very obvious visual and story allusions to the Star Wars films in general throughout it. Along with a Who Framed Roger Rabbit reference out of nowhere.

It's by Luc Besson. That was always a given.

I hope this is one of those things I wind up disagreeing on both of you with - having spectacle and quality in sci-fi films being a "choose one" thing is way too common. :(

In the 28th century, special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline work together to maintain order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the minister of defense, the duo embarks on a mission to Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis where diverse species gather to share knowledge and culture. When a dark force threatens the peaceful city, Valerian and Laureline must race against time to identify the menace that also jeopardizes the future of the universe.

Looks great. Pretty cool the new Grand Admiral Thrawn figure comes with the Holy Grail, among other items as well.

Went and saw it last night in IMAX. Absolutely true, best war movie I've seen in a long time.

Agreed, it was viceral, when you hear the Stukas overhead, your reaction is oh **** and you feel like you are there being attacked too

Btw I want to be Tom Hardy when I grow up that man pure coolness

I hope Nolan does a sequel on El Alamein

Side note Im guessing that the distinctive TIE fighter noise is based on the Stuka and there dive bomb sound

Dunkirk was quite good. Great score throughout the movie as well. Very suspenseful. I did feel like I was flying a Spitfire after I left the theater. Sure hope there are more historical war movies like that to come. Made me think I can't even imagine the things my granddad saw and experienced during the war.

Saw Valerian last night; visually gorgeous, and a definitely good plot, although I hope it doesn't fall prey to John Carter syndrome ("eh, Star Wars did it better").

[face_shame_on_you] Ah, no - Valerian was one of the (myriad) sources for SW. And this film should be judged on its own merits, IMHO.

No spoilers, but I will say it does a much better job of establishing backstory when it needs to - that is, early in the film - than Jupiter Ascending (which, tbf, suffered from other flaws, and could've been a much better film with a bit more editing and tighter writing, but that's neither here nor there ...).

Another of my must-see films of the year checked off my list. :D

So in "I'm losing my crap" news, Michael Emerson was just announced as playing a villain role in S6 of Arrow.

    Someone pinch me.

Yeah the sound was intense throughout Dunkirk, and the Stuka sirens almost overpowering.

Yup very excited about that one. He was so good on Lost. I like that Adrian Pasdar is joint the Supergirl cast as well. Nice to see the voice of Iron-Man, making some headway into the DC universe. Glad about the Captain Cold news as well.
