/\ \/ shot flat but made to look like a vertical climb all using a structure under construction. Little bit of ingenuity from Lucas.

Simplicity is a wonderful virtue and almost always wins the day.

I think it's a good illustration of practical thinking and "the right effect for the right job".

As you acknowledge, that scene also plays with perspective and orientation: a classic Lucas trick and aesthetic obsession.

THX is an overlooked gem. Lucas' commentary on the Blu special edition is worth a listen too. I wish he hadn't retired.

Heh. I did not know this. Apologies if it's already been posted; this is one of my favorite pieces of technology in the PT.

The miniature Sets built still amaze me all the detail they have.

They used a lot of miniatures, but it looks so CGI when we watch it. I guess it is due to the digital alterations.

It's not a digital alteration. It's clean, digital compositing.

No, George Lucas bewitched it all with his hateful, digital stink.

Anyone know whether Maul's Sith Infiltrator in TPM was a all-CG, or practical? I imagine there was a physical ramp for Maul to walk down, but I'm not sure of the extent of the full size effect, or whether the ship when flying is a model ship or a CG effect.

Can't find any pictures of it during shooting, but I'm very sure that is was a model.

I'm not even sure if TPM used CGI for these kind of things yet. Maybe in certain scenes, but there were definately models involved for basically all ships you encounter in that movie.
There's a book by Lorne Petersen about Sculpting in Star Wars, and it does seem to mention the Sith Infiltrator as well.

The Naboo fighters and Vulture Droids were probably the first all CG ships then, except for dummy models used in explosions.

Speaking of Naboo fighters, I got to see a full scale N1 model in 2001 at the Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building in DC.

I believe it's from a deleted scene. A related scene showed Bail Organa I believe, not yet portrayed by Jimmy Smits.

Was the deleted scene on the DVD/Blu Ray release? I only really remember the ROTS deleted scenes.

Not Bail Organa, but Bail Antilles. And yes, it's probably from a deleted scene.

The scene is included in the digital collection and, interestingly enough, titled "Bail Organa of Alderaan". The movie itself names the character Bail Antilles, though, so someone seems to have mislabeled the scene.

EDIT: Not a mislabeling. The scene was shot with Adrian Dunbar portraying Bail Organa, but was then cut while any references to Organa in the script were changed to Antilles.

Ugh, they're passing around that poorly 'shopped George Lucas green screen photo again on reddit. I wish I could find the original. It looks like it was taken from a Tunisia set photo.

I'd say it's more because of the lighting/cinematography.

The Trade Federation battleship always amazes me. Iconic design and looks great on-screen.
