Why did Obi-Wan ignite his jedi weapon in a public spaceport bar?
With stormtroopers just outside, no less?

What makes you think Obi-Wan was outing himself as a Jedi? I like to imagine the other people in the bar thought, "Holy ****! That old guy must've killed a Jedi! He's badder than all of us combined!" :p

In the universe of the first film, using a lightsaber was not necessarily synonymous with being a Jedi. ("Anybody can have a lightsaber. It’s just a weapon like a pistol." -- George Lucas, 1977)

However, this was apparently not true in the PT, where Qui-Gon wearing a lightsaber on Tatooine allows onlookers to identify him as a Jedi. Exceptions like General Grievous are rare, and even Grievous took his own lightsabers from fallen Jedi.

Considering their reactions, they probably didn't care how or why Obi-Wan has that weapon. Either way, he's a swordsman with an insufferably high opinion of himself and unless they want to be armless or legless, they'd be better off ignoring him.

They should have had a running gag with Ben reminding Luke in every movie, several times "I was a Jedi knight once the same as your father."

that's actually...something I've never thought about before, hmmm.

Obi-Wan and Luke were getting off that planet soon anyway, and would likely be gone before reinforcements arrived.

It was only because it was going to be too costly that we didn't get troopers on the Death Star with sabers.

The shooting script also had Obi Wan add that they are still used by some people throughout the galaxy - i.e. not the exclusive domain of a Jedi knight and it did not require force training just to avoid killing yourself with one, as Solo demonstrated.

Indeed, and in the January 1975 second draft Luke presents Han with a lightsaber and sword-belt as a parting gift when Han leaves Yavin IV.

I like the idea of their scarcity (thanks to the kyber plundering of Jedha), but the limiting of their physical handling to only a bunch of magicians and the PT being devoid of "people" using them was rather limiting. Not to mention the (according to some stuff on the internet) requirement for a Jedi to "hone" the crystal for it to function, good grief.

I'm glad that TFA blew that aspect wide open again.

As scripted and filmed, the scene where Obi-Wan gives Luke his father's sword ran thus:
Which, as noted above, made it into modified form into the novelization.

It's limiting that "the weapon of a Jedi Knight" is only used by Jedi?
Finn having even one swing against even a wounded force sensitive was ridiculous tripe.

Not really. Even an amateur swordsman can hold out against an experienced one.

Especially when the experienced one is using the "fight" as an opportunity to bully, beat, and torture a despised opponent.

Having lived on Tattooine for so long, it's likely Obi-Wan was fairly decently known amongst the locals there as just being a nearby resident and occasionally passing through. Maybe the biker gangs at one point tried to mess with him in his homestead but were fought off at one point. Maybe they didn't even know him his Obi-Wan. Plus, for Obi-Wan to have known what a hive of scum and villainy Mos Eisley was, to know precisely where to go in order to find a pilot to transport them off the planet, and just his overall familiarity with the area I think indicates he had been seen around town once or twice before.

Plus, the Stormtroopers weren't looking for Jedi, they were looking for droids.

Seeing things before they happen doesn't mean that they cannot be hurt, because they didn't see it. And as we saw in TCW and "Rebels", a non Force user can last against a Jedi or a Sith.

Also as noted by Sarge, Ben could have easily just finished Finn off with a Force shove or a Force choke. Even using the Force to anchor him to the ground. He wanted to torment Finn which we see when he's pressed him against the tree and pushes his cross hilt blade into his shoulder. But as soon as Finn nails him, he becomes enraged and disarms Finn.

Did he want to torment Finn, or did JJ want an exuse for more fighting?

Why even have a Lightsaber duel at all? Lucas didn't need that in ANH. Or any other SW films. There was plenty of fighting as it is. See, that kind of thinking doesn't work and goes nowhere.
