God I HATE my family. Just got done with a screaming match with my mother and father. They refuse to condemn trump and they go on tangents about Muslims the moment I bring up you know the literal nazis. they think that cause they did not join in the racist rallies that that makes their hands clean. I FUDGING HATE people who think that the actions of who and what they voted for do not fall on them. they essentially told me that anything Trump does is not in any way their fault cause they did not make those choices, god do people really have no ability to be held accountable for the fact that they put someone in office?

Thank god I am moving with my sister to California, I cannot deal with my parents anymore.

    That sucks.

My family are more conservative than I am for the most part, but they're moderates, and we don't have too many arguments.

I have a cousin who voted for Trump but that's it. The rest of my fairly-large family were all very pro-Clinton, even more pro-Clinton than I was, which is the primary difference between us--I supported Sanders in the primary and they were pro-Clinton all along.

Who would you like to be the next Dem Leader, Sanders or someone else ?
Admittedly I do wish Barack Obama would run for a 3rd term

TBH after this week I'm almost pining for the (literally) days of the Mooch, that could be called a glory period to this week.

Sanders or Elizabeth Warren. I've got an eye on Kamala Harris but don't know enough about her at this point.

And BTW, about those statues, and why it is important to tear down the monuments to people who invoked torture methods worthy of a Denning book on people just because they were of African descent:

    Tear the statues down

No defense for trying to preserve this history.

To be fair, Lincoln was a bit of a white supremacist as well but he was fighting against, rather than in favor of, the ownership of human beings.

    Elizabeth Warren, probably.

I think Sanders is a bit old for the position now.

I wish Sanders would inspire more party members to lean leftward as there's been a constant lean to try to meet the Republicans in the middle. Which, hey, I'd normally support if not for the fact they have the view of leaning further right whenever this happens.

As a left-wing European, I had great hopes for Sanders. As I discussed with Americans (mostly young Americans), I really thought he had his chances. Ah, I can't shake off the idea that your country missed a grand opportunity there.

You can't choose your family, but you can get a good distance away from them.

Warren isn't young either... she'll be 71 in 2020, older than Hillary and Trump were in 2016.

Sanders had a good chance until they labeled him a communist.
Unfortunate for everyone. He would have been so much better than Trump.

Actually, the socialism thing actually increased Sander's appeal. He's the only politician in years who has been talking about it without the slander of Red to it.

Which is good since, again, Europe.

You can be one without the other. Look at Roosevelt and Captain America.

I guess that appeal increase, if there were any, weren't enough as far as the Democrats were concerned.

Identifying as an independent much of your career and being notoriously difficult to work with even among your supposed allies probably didn't help either.

The thing about Bernie isn't that he lost, it's that he got as far as he did.

Which should have been taken as a warning sign just how sick the base was of both parties.

One reason Trump got elected is because people were sick of both parties.

The Democratic National Committee had decided before the first primary that Clinton would be the nominee, they haven't even really denied that they weren't going to give Sanders a chance, and their excuse was, 'Well, Sanders just now decided he was a Democrat and Clinton has worked for the party for 25 years."

IOW, party before country and party before what any number of voters might have actually wanted.

I did vote for Clinton in the general and would do it again, against Trump (also because I love Obama and the two of them had a good relationship after 2008). I would vote for any of the GOP Presidents in the past 40 years against Trump.

But I can't say I blame people for being sick of both parties.

    I mean, Scalise.

I don't want to sound like I'm apologizing for these nuts. I'm not. Like, I'm Jewish, and I live less then an hour for Charlottesville: it's an existential threat to my life, and the fact that the president has not outright condemned this, and the very idea that they can be somehow considered morally equivalent to BLM is outright disgusting. On the list of people whom I don't respect, these nuts are number 1.

That said, I think if we look to the people who are calling people to violence and decide that only the right is to blame we're being shortsighted. I'm not blaming the left for the death of the woman in Charlottesville, but if we want to assign blame for the overall breakdown in civil political discourse in America some of it has to go to the left as much as the right.

You don't have to be politically left leaning to consider these white supremacists nuts and crazy and oppose supremacy in any form.

That said,I think in North America at this moment being labeled left is considered worse than being labeled extreme right. Somehow right leaning is better than left leaning in some people's eyes.
