Census How Many Good Films has Adam Sandler Made?

A simple question.

 

I wonder if people who look back fondly on his early films have watched them recently.

 

None, because he's never directed a film.

 

Punch-Drunk Love, but that's pretty much it.

 

Punch-Drunk Love proves he can act. Funny People would've been a great film if it weren't 4 hours long.

 

My son loves him... I don't really have an opinion either way. I'm not a huge fan, but I don't hate his stuff.

 

I haven't seen any of his movies.​

 

His early stuff is funny, but it certainly isn't good.


Except for Billy Madison.

 

And Happy Gilmore.

 

See, I disagree there. Pixels I think is a good film that's in that description -- it was way more maligned than it deserved to be, had a bunch of good people in it, and had its heart in the right place (and a great soundtrack). I can often rewatch it, but it's not a "good" film. I think Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, and The Wedding Singer are legitimately good, and Big Daddy comes close but ultimately too inconsistent. I've heard similarly good things about 50 First Dates and Hotel Transylvania though have not seen either.

And yes, Punch-Drunk Love as Adam points out is a legitimately good film.

 

Pixels is atrociously bad, and Sandler looks depressed and disheveled throughout.

 

As a former Clinton voter, he's accustomed to vastly overrating quality and public appeal.

 

I actually liked his totally unnoticed sleeper flick The Cobbler. It wasn't good, but he wasn't playing someone obnoxious in it. I thought Funny People was good too. Recently rewatched it on TV.

 

I really like 50 First Dates and Happy Gilmore. They're actually really funny, along with some of his other earlier films. I really enjoyed Pixels too.

 

Spanglish proves he can't.

 

I liked both "Hotel Transylvania" movies. And if you can accept Kevin James as the President of the United States, you can at least tolerate "Pixels" (which wasn't bad, I thought).

 

Spanglish is a darn good movie actually. Paz Vega is great in it and that one sex scene with Tea Leoni is hilarious.

I do think The Wedding Singer is a great movie. Happy Gilmore has good bits, but it's not as funny as it thinks it is.

 

Happy Gilmore is one of my all time favorite comedies. Billy Madison is pretty great too. You could probably add Click to the list as the 3rd act of the movie has some of his best "serious" acting in a movie.

 

Billy Madison is seriously overrated. It's nearly unwatchable, honestly.

 

The more I bash Sandler, the more I gain legitimacy as a film connoisseur. He is the worst.

 

Fun fact: I think Bradley Whitford abjectly refuses to talk about his time on this film. He'll talk Revenge of the Nerds 2 all day, but never this.

 

Up until I read this, whenever someone mentioned Punch-Drunk Love, I thought they meant this. Yeah, the Wedding Singer is not bad.

 

I really enjoyed The Wedding Singer and Spanglish was great. OR they are passable compared to the rest of his movies. I can't really tell...

 

Never seen Spanglish but Wedding Singer is passable compared to his other movies.


As that sets a low bar though....

 

His fight scene with Bob Barker was funny.
