Gaming Horizon Series: Zero Dawn (PS4) and Forbidden West (PS4/5)

Finally took on a Thunderjaw for the first time. That's one bad mofo. Certainly took me awhile to bring it down.

 

Yep, it is indeed the definition of a bad-ass robot - love how you hear it before you see it.

 

It's got that Jurassic Park T-Rex essence of it.

 

Love fighting Thunderjaws


Hate fighting Stormbeaks (anything that flies)

 

There's few things that beat killing a Thunderjaw - with its own weaponry!

 

True story, I only realized that there was a heavy weapon blown off the Thunderjaw I fought only after I killed it.

 

Always take out the missile launchers first!

 

Just beat Redmaw today. This time around I found the missile launchers and used the weapon against it. Certainly made the fight a lot quicker.

 

Even with doing that Redmaw still takes a real pounding.

First expansion

Due November and looks rather super. I'm hoping to see more of the Faro machines (Metal Devil) this time round. A semi active one that we need to destroy from the inside appeals to me.

 

I still haven't even beaten the main story yet. Taking my sweet time with the game as a whole.

 

Just last night I beat my final Hunting Grounds Trial. It's the one where you shoot off heavy cannons from a Thunderjaw and use them to kill a couple Ravagers. The Lodge weapons seem to be well earned for sure. I'm not sure if I have any more side quests (outside of the one for the Shield Weaver Outfit); so outside of tackling the last Tallneck I don't have much else to do except continuing on with the main story. There's also the collectibles like the Banuk Statues; but I figured I might be able to do that after the main story's completion.

I will likely be doing the same in about two weeks.

The other aspect that recent releases has emphasised to me about HZD is what it didn't do.

• It didn't release as a skeleton game, onto which DLC packs of stuff that should have been present could be flogged for
• It didn't simply drop a big, empty void of a world on us
• It didn't use a paid loot box gambling system as the main means of progression.

What did it do? It put out a complete, finished game that was also very, very good and it didn't take the mick out of consumers. It also had a new and unique aesthetic, especially the robots. All of that has added up to both a smash hit and a sense of trust such that I can see Guerilla getting preorders for the Frozen Wilds DLC to the same degree CD Projekt Red did on Witcher 3 DLC.

 

The other day I overrode the final cauldron, "Zeta". I was kind of expecting a more difficult fight, but considering it was essentially just bringing down a Thunderjaw it was pretty easy. Took a lot less time than the other cauldrons for sure; especially considering I'm near Level 50 and have all of the Lodge weapons and most skills learned.

 

I've still not done all the cauldrons, must get that sorted before the xpac lands



Looks like I'm arranging a gaming day on Saturday

 

I'm still not done with all of the corrupt zones. I came across this one the other day with one of those sandworm-type machines and I said to myself, "uh, I don't think so". Definitely needed to stock up on some ammo before getting involved with that one.

 

You need cover to take on Rockcrawlers - preferably a nice big, mini mountain rock formation.

The bastards tend to travel in pairs too so watch out for that.

 

I thought I've read that some people have managed to override them; but they must've been full of it.

I'm sure it's possible, not sure how as they are very sensitive to movement, even when crouched.

I wish there was a way I could step into a critic's shoes and try to find some reason why this game shouldn't be considered across the board as GOTY. The developers come out with updates of bug fixes and the like every few weeks; even though I haven't really seen too many people complaining about certain issues they've had. And on top of everything else, it's certainly helped to sell Sony's console this year as demand is up nearly 350%. Yeah, I'd think it's safe to say that Aloy could be Sony's franchise character for sure.
