They using brown pigment and fake tan everyday in Daisy Ridley already made people feel uncomfortable, especially when brown/black women exist

Rey just looked a littled tanned in TFA to me. I mean the alternative may have been her skin looking oddly pasty and unburnt despite having lived on a bright desert planet.

True but outside of Rey's parents possibly being killed by somebody in the Skywalker family it's hard for me imagine Rey's backstory having a more personal impact to the Skywalkers than her being related to them.

Also there's no way somebody in the Skywalker family killed Rey's parents because c'mon people!

Yeah, there's no way to stay white in that sun most likely. My skin would burn so bad, it would peel, and it would come back darker. 14 years and I'd be really dark. I lived in a desert for a while and my skin became several shades darker. It took it years to fully lose that after I left the desert. Melanin is human sun screen.

Unless of course Jakku's ozone layer is tremendous and can block out all the UV radiation from the sun! Then no tanning required--though Vitamin D deficiency would become an issue unless those ration packs the scavengers are getting from Unkar contained it.

That's why brown/black actress would be a better option. If they want to looks more "realistic" about it, Rey's skin would be terrible after 15 years in a desert

I recently edited my post to include the Jakku ozone layer. If it was super awesome it might block more UV than Earth's ozone layer. UV is what burns us (it's radiation damage). Although I agree that TFA would have been a great opportunity to cast someone in the lead who isn't white, I think that if they were trying to make Rey look more tan it was just about trying to make it a little more realistic to if she actually lived in a desert for 14 years. I don't see that as about race. Skin can get darker or lighter depending on sun exposure (or lack of) for everyone.

I thought I read somewhere that Tatooine's desert climate was being used to explain why Obi-Wan in ANH looked older than he is... Haha.

In the concept art of TFA Rey's planet was not a desert but a water planet.

    Yep!

"Jakku was once a verdant world with forests and water, but some past calamity turned it into a barren globe of scorched badlands and marching dunes"

the first KOTOR game explains that Tatooine was one a verdant world, the ancestors of the Sand People -if I remember-were the ones that destroyed it and that is why they never show their faces.

It's quite similar to our Earth and how deserts were once bodies of water. Makes you wonder what caused Jakku's fall.

I want to know, but only when I personally see it in the cinema. I don't want to be spoiled for finding out in the moment. Imagine being that person in the cinema who already knew Vader was Luke's father - it would be a huge bummer not experiencing that with everyone else. Also... I think it's Europe that gets it first - on the 13th - anyway.

I got the "pleasure" of seeing Kylo kill Han in an animated GIF on my Twitter before I even saw the movie. Only one not to gasp in the theater that day.

I think "I am your father" was the first thing I learned about Star Wars. So it's harder for me to imagine going in without knowing.

Yeah if Rey's parentage is spoiled here it would be great if this site put some sort of huge flashing sign on the home page saying, "DO NOT ENTER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED!!!"
