The club has been behind in the transfer times since before Ferguson left.

City & Chelsea spent big straight away when the money came in, buying established talent.
Fergie was about buying young & developing a team long-term. But waiting 5 years for a player to become world class while your rivals already have world class talent & are winning regularly is not a workable plan in the modern game.

Martial, Rashford & Lingard have potential to be really good players for a long time for United. But they aren't there yet.
How long is it going to take for them to reach that level? While City have Jesus, De Bruyne & Silva & Sterling already.

It's good to elevate young talent & academy players, but the Class of 92 team can't be replicated now. There isn't time for that

...Lingard is two years older than Sterling and Silva.

...Rashford is two years older than Jesus, who is the same age as Martial.

So that leaves De Bruyne, a whole six months older than Lingard.

Have you taken a leaf out of Mourinho's book with this nonsense, Master Richard?

You should accept he's the problem, and other managers would - and should - get more from these players. That goes for Pogba, too.

Are City's players better than Uniteds? Broadly yes but not by the gulf that we're seeing now. Yes Rashford and Martial need to step up and show the promise they clearly have and Lingard is a bit of an enigma who at times looks like he could be great and then just isn't.

Irrespective to all this though, Mourniho just isn't getting the best out of them.

Richie is actually accurate regarding Pep's possession play in that if you have the ball then the opponent is not a threat, but in the days of "yore" United didn't necessarily bother with possession and based their game on camping in the opponents half because if you're up there intercepting balls and then pushing forwards again, the opponent can't score as they can't get into your half.
Fergie went with counter attack only when he knew he was out gunned technically, any other time he took the game to his opponent.

Mourinho goes with park the bus the minute he believes he is matched and gives the impression he has no faith in his team. This is a massive failing on his behalf and is to the detriment of United and the league as a whole.

I personally think United would be better off with a Klopp or Pochetino in charge over Mourinho as he's too conservative.

That being said in over 50% of prior seasons United would indeed be first and pushing for the title and that this season with Pep is a massive exception.

As a Barrow fan though, this exception just makes the Premier League look like a farce this year and I'm now more interested in the relegation battle now

This year it's the SPL, but worse. Celtics lead is about half of Citys, and GD about 15 less.

True but the SPL has been a farce for decades and whilst we've seen a lack of competitiveness in major leagues before (Barca/Real stranglehold in spain. Munich in Germany, now PSG in France) the Premier league has always had the feeling of being competitive.

Even in the days of ManU/Arsenal or ManU/Chelsea or ManU/City or Leicester and Blackburn. There were always teams close to capitalising every season. Spurs and Liverpool recently and even Newcastle included in (granted not too recent) history. The league this year is all City and that's because Mourinho (who has the second best squad in the league) is not the manager he used to be and is too afraid to let United off the leash.

    Mourinho, the new Wenger.
Used to be good but isn't any more.

Goretzka isn't done yet, so who knows?

That goal is exactly why VVD is required. It wasn't a system issue, it was a sloppy, individual error. VVD will marshall the other defenders, something we have not had since Carragher retired. He'll actually be a leader.

Top 4 is all that matters.

    Which order, whatever.
    The league is done.

Now I know how fans in the Scottish PL who aren't Celtic feel. No reason to be interested in anything until the summer transfer window.

But do you think you'll finish top four?

If not, hopefully Mourinho stays anyway, and is given a lot more money to waste.

No reason we can't get Top 4.
Everyone else is about as inconsistent.

No. Top 4 is not all that matters. Winning is what matters.

If top 4 is all you're after then support arsenal of yesteryear otherwise you want a team that is looking to win any sort of silverware.

In 10 years time you won't look at how many times you got top 4 but at the amount of trophies in the cabinet.

And yet another turgid United display too.
Let them off the leash and show some faith mourinho.

    He won't though.

Which is why Top 4 is the only achievable goal this season.

Unless we win the FA Cup, which seems unlikely based on current form.

I'd love it if José went with the 4-3-3 style of his first Chelsea side. It would be much more out of Pogba than playing deep alongside a DM like Matic & worrying about going forward too much.

@Diggy hope you didn’t get your hopes up too much regarding Goretzka. German media confirm he will join Bayern next year.

15 mil for barkley. i doubt he's healthy for the half of the time he's with us, but that's a good price for a domestic cup player.

    Great goal by Lingard again.

Say what you will about José, but Lingard has become a very good player under him instead of just a cup player who scores the odd goal.

Seems unnecessary for Barca to get Countinho now given he can't play in the CL.
It would be better for Liverpool if he stayed until the end of the season, they need him more at the moment.
