Arena 2024-25 NCAA Football Discussion

Would just like to point out here that, despite whatever lies Jed York has told to the contrary, Jim Harbaugh most certainly did not bolt from the 49ers. He was fired by the silver spoon twerp Jed York and his yes man general manager Trent Baalke.

Unfortunately for my schadenfreude purposes, until about a month ago it looked like this idiotic move (which, in turn, was followed by the even-more-idiotic move of hiring Jim Tomsula as his replacement) might end up setting the 49ers franchise back a decade — they went 8-35 in the next 43 games following his ouster —, but they struck gold (heh) with the Garoppolo deal and the team is undoubtedly going to be everyone’s chic Super Bowl pick next year. Darn.

Oh well. We’ll always have this

I wanted Clemson to beat Bama last week because Bama is the Patriots of college football. So, I'll be rooting for the Bulldogs to washout the Crimson Tide on Monday.

 

45 will be there tonight. I'd give anything for players to kneel, but it's college so they won't...

 

Given that it's Georgia and Alabama would be ten times more incredible, still. But, a hundred times more certain they won't.

Is there a better in-game / second-half adjustment coach than Saban in college football at this point?

I can't think of anyone else who'd say "screw it, you know what? Let's put in the freshman and see if he can't get this going for us" in NCAAF?

 

That the same Nick Saban who blew a 21-6 lead in the playoff semifinal Sugar Bowl against Ohio State? And the same Nick Saban who blew a 24-14 lead in the fourth quarter of the title game a year ago?

Recency bias is real, my friend.

 

Not to mention a 24-0 lead to Auburn one year.

 

Okay, in texting with my brother this morning, I came up with an 8-team playoff system I don't hate. You use the Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Cotton Bowls with traditional tie-ins, and then seed the winners afterwards. It keeps a little tradition, rewards winning a Power-five championship, and gives the little guy an actual shot, though not guaranteeing them one.

So, you'd slot it

Rose - Big Ten Champ vs. Pac 12 Champ
Sugar - SEC Champ vs. Big XII Champ
Orange - ACC Champ vs. AT LARGE
Cotton - AT LARGE* vs. AT LARGE

With the first Cotton Bowl AT LARGE reserved for a qualifying Group of Five Team. Undefeated and ranked in the top fifteen should suffice.

So, this year.

Ohio State vs USC in the Rose (where it should have been)
Georgia vs. Oklahoma in the Sugar (where it should have been)
Clemson vs. Wisconsin in the Orange
UCF vs. Alabama in the Cotton

After the games are played, the committee ranks the four winners, and 1-4 and 2-3 happen in neutral site games that were bid upon, and then those winners play in the NCG, again in a neutral site that was bid on. We add one more week to the seasons, sure, but since the NCAA doesn't actually care about academics or student safety, and certainly not more than they care about cash, it comes to fruition.

 

Yeah this has been my ideal mental final 8 since the beginning. It's perfect.
