I know Johnston has said he's retiring after The Silver Chair, but plenty of people in showbiz "retire" and then come back, so you never know. Disney recently brought him on board to direct reshoots for their Nutcracker film, scheduled for release later this year.

A few months ago, Johnston was also announced as director to a high profile Wanda sci-fi film in China, but I haven't heard much movement on that since its initial announcement.

Preferably more unknown and up and coming directors frankly. I want them controllable and easily manipulated so we don’t get their “style” too much impacting what else is supposed to happen.

I hate to say this but it’s so much easier to say who I would hate. I want to be open minded but I think Cuaron for instance is one of the worst directors in Hollywood and I legitimately hate everything he does. He makes everything boring and is clueless with directing actors. His performances are cringeworthy for the most part. I’m sorry I know most love him but he would ruin Star Wars. Even worse would be Paul Thomas Anderson who would make the most boring film ever made.

After Blade Runner 2049, ok, I’ll bite - I would like Villanueve. I hated Arrival and think it was poorly written, boring, nothing happens at all, bad ending. A real pile. But it’s clear to me he has all of the talent to make a masterpiece, that was just a terrible script.

Star Wars should be epic and action packed but also thought provoking and deep. To me Rian Johnson is the perfect Star Wars director and it was a fantastic choive giving him a trilogy.

I would be curious to see who they choose next because I think avoiding bigger directors with too much built in style is a great move. A guy like Ron Howard for instance is a consummate professional who will take the script and really make the best movie possible from it. Rush for instance was a masterful film and basically perfectly crafted I think. But some of my favorite directors like David Fincher and Ridley Scott would be a poor fit despite being so talented.

    Steven Speilberg
Joe Johnson based on his Rocketeer and Captain America work
And the late TONY SCOTT would make a fantastic, light-hearted, fast-paced Star Wars film. Something not so important....but fast and fun.

I'm going to be very surprised if Guillermo del Toro isn't eventually asked to direct a SW film.

The Shape of Water is fantastic.... my favorite del Toro. I hope he gets to make a Jabba film, as he has wished to do this. I would settle for anything by him, though.

Jim Jarmusch making a black and white collection of shorts titled Caf and Deathsticks. One short features Bill Murray playing a caf shop operator named Beel Mooree who serves two jawas named Rzwa and Gzwa of the Wu-Tinni Clan.

Ridley Scott doing a film about the Coruscant underground (taking some of the concept/development from George's TV project)

Spielberg directing a movie about Luke set between ROTJ and TFA. It could begin with Sebastian Stan in the role and end with Hamill reprising the role for the sack on the Jedi Academy.

What about Lindsay Norgard. He directed "Princess Warrior," so he already has experience with filming lightsaber battles. Seems like a no-brainer.

I would love for Gareth Edwards to be able to direct a Star Wars film alone, by himself, with little interference. Rogue One was amazing but it could have been even better if Gareth had more control! Also, Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott would be great.
