This means no Dr Who nonsense Juliet!

The other day I got rid of a lot of old CDs and I found some soundtracks (not film scores, mind) that I hadn't heard in forever. Making digital copies, I've been exploring these albums and thinking - am I out of "the loop" or do they not just make compilations like The Crow, Judgement Night, Singles etc anymore?

I mean, I love the Drive soundtrack but it's a few retro synthwave tracks from Kavinsky, College etc with 14 tracks of ambient awesome from Cliff Martinez. The Crow, by contrast, was just a who's who of dark alternative bands. The Cure. Machines of Loving Grace. Helmet. Pantera. RATM. NIN (covering Joy Division!). Rollins Band.

Taking film scores - as in the orchestral or other music from the film itself - aside, what film soundtracks do you really remember and love, and do they "make them like that anymore"?

The Crow was a stand out for me. It's not the sort of music I used to listen to, but I did love that album, perhaps because I loved the film.

The other one that pops into my mind it Grosse Pointe Blank. Which was nineties, but all eighties music.

Highlander, both for the Queen tracks and the Michael Kamen score (which tends to get overlooked). Sticking with Queen, Flash Gordon has a great soundtrack.

As for orchestral music, Vertigo has a great soundtrack by Bernard Herrmann - you can't hear it and not think of the film. Puts shivers down my spine.

ME: Put scores to one side, we're discussing soundtracks.
    COLDPLAY NURD: "Here am scores!"

    Well done mate, well done.

Thought Heat did have Moby covering Joy Division.

    @Diggy: This track...

"Oh don't talk of love" the shadows purr
    Murmuring me away from you
"Don't talk of worlds that never were
The end is all that's ever true..."

You mentioned it in the OP but Singles is my favorite (and no I really don't think they do that anymore, unless you count something like Guardians of the Galaxy where they just use a bunch of older songs.)

Singles was so good, given it captures a point in time musically so incredibly well. Plus, "Would?" remains one of my favourite AiC songs ever.

The comparison was often made with Reality Bites, in terms of being Gen-X tales, but Singles had the infinitely better soundtrack.

I was blaming Coldplay Nurd exclusively though.

omg the Trainspotting soundtrack. Just with Born Slippy you have a classic album, but that - and Human Traffic - are so my gateway to not drugs because they're bad, and EDM in the late 90s.

    mega mega white thing

Crikey. I didn't read the "no scores" part.

Top Gun has a great soundtrack. Never can have too much Kenny Loggins. I'll slink out now.

A good mixture of actually good songs plus cheesy but enjoyable, yet not actually good songs (Looking at you, "King of Wishful Thinking"). On top of that, each song selected for the soundtrack and used in the movie fits almost perfectly into that moment in the movie and helps the movie progress. You can listen to the soundtrack (or just songs from the soundtrack) and be taken into the movie, but also watch the movie and be taken into the music as a storytelling device. And, it's a movie that's managed to age fairly well, so that helps.

I remember listening to the Flashdance soundtrack on cassette tape in the eighties. Big seller back then, iirc, though younger posters here probably wouldn't recognise many of the artists.

    Reading comprehension can be tough!

But they should make it part of the mod exams.

I saw your shame, Heelsy! At least ewok was worse.

    NOT SCORES.

A film score is original music written specifically to accompany a film

In my heart of hearts I know I must respond with this, a soundtrack so good I kind of wish it didn't have a weird, dumb movie it technically belonged to.

Also I'm at two excuses to post Prince in as many days, nice.
