And the fact Luke didn't like fighting must be taken into account. He's not a warmonger. He gave Jabba every opportunity to surrender - Luke didn't want to kill him or his goons. Luke didn't want to fight Vader. And Luke didn't appear in person to fight Ben. He's powerful but he restrains himself.

No, Luke did want to fight. He was intending to get Jabba angry enough to take them out to the Sarlaac. He was willing to negotiate a peaceful solution, but he was spoiling for a fight. By TLJ, Luke has had thirty years of growing up that he's done.

Actually, you’re right. I remembered the scene wrong. I was focused on his ‘this is your last chance, free us or die’ comment before he walks the plank.

Quick clarification: do we have anything akin to the old-EU 'rankings' that is canon? Or, put another way, how canonical should we consider the GL comments on Luke's potential?

She hasn't talked about commentary or interviews, but she has said that they're not setting out to change the narrative in those stories. Meaning that Anakin is the Chosen One, he brings balance to the Force and that his children could be very powerful enough to fight the Sith. That's why the story for the ST is about how the darkness that Ben and Snoke are starting to spread may have resulted in Rey being as strong as she is and not that the Force was ever not in balance after ROTJ. Or that Luke is not as strong as his father or his nephew. We also know that they've stuck with Lucas's own words about Luke's relationship status as he said that if he did the ST, then Luke would never have a family of his own like in the EU. In TLJ, Luke is all by himself.

Probably an additional three years of training between ANH and TESB.

Of course, the argument is now negated given Rey in TLJ.

Luke was on his own and was also doing double duty as part of Rogue Squadron. He didn't have as much time dedicated to his training until he goes to Dagobah, much like Rey has all that time on Ach To.

Given the time he had a day in ANH, he likely had the same throughout the three years. In contrast, TLJ shows that no training is required, as seen not only in Rey but also in Broom Boy.

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a lightspeed projectile, kid.

When the magician dies during the magic act, it isn't considered a successful trick.

    Luke 0

Finn faced off against the F.O. at even closer range than Luke and survived without a scratch.
Finn faced off against Kylo Ren to buy time for Kylo's target. Finn didn't die.

Luke's life is essentially Space Elvis. Lit the scene up, then hid from the public, made a Vegas spectacle and died sitting on the throne. I wouldn't be surprised if there are Luke sightings.

Luke isn't the most powerful Jedi during the Original Trilogy; Yoda is. By The Last Jedi, Luke is obviously the most powerful Force user around, but that's a discussion for another section.

Luke wasn't trained on how levitate a Lightsaber, but he manages to figure it out on his own. We also don't know much about Broom Boy. He might have been one of Luke's students, for all we know.

I'll continue to insist, in ESB Luke says loud and clear "But I've learnt so much" while Yoda is in debunking mode, yet doesn't object.

So the message conveyed to the audiences was clear, i.e. Luke had learnt much in the time between ANH and ESB, it's just unknown whether he picked up learning materials from Ben's hut on Tatooine or else.

Right. The implication was that Luke did do some research on the Jedi and found out a few things here and there, which helped him along the way. Though, you could make an argument that Luke just took a wild guess in thinking he could summon his Lightsaber to his hand via the Force.

Luke learned by doing, IMO. On the job training can be hugely effective. Especially when you're motivated by something that obviously wants to eat you.

Yoda is hardly alive at this point, Luke is obviously the most powerful Jedi during RotJ.

During the Original Trilogy, up until his death in ROTJ, Yoda was the most powerful.
    And now that
Luke and Snoke are gone, Rey is the most powerful. Kylo is really strong in the Force, but
    Rey's potential is sky high.
