I never considered how the ‘let the past die’ comment related to Luke until now. He became the legend of Luke Skywalker, ‘what he was meant to be’ after letting the past go. Awesome.

Fantastic post, all of it! =D=

I really loved everything about the so-called Force plot. Rey, Kylo, Luke, Snoke, Yoda. I think they laid a great foundation for resolution in IX.

The best scene was Luke and R2-D2 in the Millennium Falcon. It felt like classic Star Wars. R2-D2 is criminally underutilized in the sequel trilogy.

I disagree. She's not left with nothing. The mirror gives her a very precise answer: "you". It tells her that she is the only one who is responsible to determine her belonging. It is thus useless to try to look for her parents 'cause they are not the answer. However, she misunderstands the answer (she' s in denial) and is disappointed. Kylo then open her eyes.

    Yes!
It has become a bit more of a like thread but these very observations like you just shared is a very good elaboration on the broader story element in TLJ ;that i really liked and in the form of positive conversation i like to have. Its hard to have a conversation in where it seemed that every response was akin to "nope, that sucks too" which is fine because it was a complaints thread, here i just see a more positive conversation since we all can agree that we liked some scenes if not all of them and dont need someone shutting everything you like down.

What aspects improved most for some of you after initial shock and a second or more viewings?

For me it was Canto Bight. On the first go, because it’s more adventurous and you’re wondering how it’s going to move from where it starts to the actual dismantling of the tracking system, every small diversion sticks out more but on repeat viewings, when you know that mission won’t succeed, I find myself instead relishing the diversions snd little details more.

I didn’t notice the woman who sort of seems to exist as a hologram that Finn seems startled by initially because of how much more there is to see all around him. I didnt realize that BB8 really is shaped a little like the slot machines in their world. Seeing Broom Boy get knocked down and knowing he has the Force but is showing restraint against, well, him:

And even just being able to appreciate the crazy practical effects in characters like him and the others, including the Falthiers. The Falthiers scene also can just be enjoyed for the beauty that it is more on repeat viewings. You can appreciate the framing of the shots more and the speed of the characters and just have more fun with it. All the little stuff related to their plot comes to life more on repeat viewings and it flows more.

Totally agree. I was just referring to she, at that moment, is left with nothing because she's misunderstood the answer. I am absolutely on board with the notion that the vision gives her the answer she needs - that she is the only one responsible for her belonging and her future, but it isn't until later in the film that she understands this.

Are you folks happy that the new trilogy has a “will they join forces somehow or won’t they and have to fight?” of a different kind than the OT?

It’s one of my favorite aspects. I was worried they’d lose that. I see it as a huge part of what made the OT so compelling all the way to the end and I’m very glad they made sort of a new take on it. Am I alone in this or are some of you intrigued by their toxic dynamic too?

You're not alone there. The whole Rey and Kylo thread is one of my favorite things in the movie. I for one can't wait to see what happens in 9.

I loved how now the fandom takes Kylo seriously. He is evil in a different way from Vader, but still very wicked and dangerous.

Honestly, if it were an option, I'd have voted for the ending scene with the broom boy. Because it is so brilliant and unique that it deserves more credit in my eyes. It would have been so easy and expected to have just ended the movie on the Falcon.

It is an amazingly impactful scene, considering it features no actual dialogue and focuses on a character we barely know.

Snoke (ruler of the First Order and Master of Kylo Ren): yells at Kylo and uses Sith lightning for Kylo to fall back. (blaming Kylo for having compassion) Note: He's got no support from anyone.

Bargwill Tomder (ruler of the fathier stables and Master of Temiri Blagg : yells at Temiri and uses a lightning whip for Temiri to fall back. (blaming Temiri for having compassion ) Note: He's got support though with the two other kids.

    This is not by accident.

Yoda does a similar thing in Rebels (in the episodes "Path of the Jedi" and "Shroud of Darkness").

In my third viewing, I noticed (or think I did) her smile in that rain scene, which is a really nice touch. I also finally realized that the cave scene is when her hair comes down, perhaps reflecting how her view is shifting, or how the experience is affecting her. I think the fact that it stays down for the rest of the film is evidence of the latter. When she connects with Ben and then accosts Luke, it's raining, and in that case the shelter gets blown away. Plus, an ocean (Ahch-To) is basically the opposite of a desert (Jakku). I love the symbolism in all that.

It's cool, but I like the greater distinction of his shuttle. Somewhat related, just after he refrains from firing on the Raddus' bridge, there's a brief and quiet shot of just the Silencer. I think it's a nice reflection of Kylo being alone in that moment -- not with the Resistance, but not quite able to kill his mother.

I sort of misinterpreted Holdo's sacrifice at first; I thought it was just multiple shots of the Supremacy, a stylistic move I associate more with anime. Similarly, Luke's face-off with Kylo felt a little cartoonish. But thinking about it afterward, and especially seeing a comparison to Obi-Wan and Maul's final duel, I was totally on board. The throne room was just plain crazy on first viewing, because the immediate setup felt a lot like ROTJ, but then took the sharp turn. A misconception that was cleared up very quickly was with the caretakers' first appearance. For just a moment, I thought they were part of the Force connection, like it was some really bizarre dream sequence. [face_laugh]

Definitely. I like that the dynamic between Rey and Kylo is more even (so to speak) than the one between Luke and Vader. Not that the latter is bad, but I like the distinction.

Nice set of questions, Ender. :)

The Force Awakens had a Rebel Alliance pilot doll.
    Rogue One had stormtrooper dolls.
The Last Jedi had Luke and AT-AT figures.

Well, as much as I disliked the movie, the best scene was definitely the Luke/R2 bit on the Falcon. To me, it felt like the one scene where the old Luke really came to the fore.

I literally came in here to say the same! It's absolutely hands-down the best scene. Even R2 playing the Leia message was what I was expecting, said just before he played the message that he'd play it. It was the one time there wasn't a subversion or twist or whatever, and it just played the way I expected it to and I loved it for it!

If I had to pick another bit I liked, I did love the contrasting perspectives of Luke and Ben's showdown.

When Kylo leads the attacking Tie Fighters directed at the Raddus, Kylo couldn't go through shooting at the Raddus bridge where his mother Leia is inside directing the Resistance against the FO, but then the Tie escorts carry on the intention. The moment of impact of the Tie shots and subsequent bridge explodes into pieces, Leia is sucked out into the cold of space. Kylo may have thought Leia was dead.

This intense scene seems to be mimicked in the first flashback scene Luke couldn't go through killing Kylo, even though he saw inside the horrors of the future, is seen being forced push back by Kylo during that sequence out of the hut as it explodes into pieces. Luke also says Kylo may have thought he was dead.

Great post you have there, you put a lot of effort on it, and I agree with everything.

It was very well written, I hope you find a way to bring something of that to here as well.

Well, I think there’s an opportunity here to transition this what we like thread into becoming more discussion based around what we like.

It started out sort of with us all just listing what we liked but if we go more in depth into what we like or what others like by discussing in more detail why it is we like those things or those lines or any parallels then that could lead to some interesting discussion in here too.
