^ I still remember that Image, it made ist first appearance in the ESB music sheet book. Still find it amazing how small the actual set was and how big it appeared both as Vader's room (and the adjacent) hologram room in the final film.

^ I believe I understand exactly how you feel. To paraphrase Humphrey Bogart from Casablanca:

We'll always have the Original Trilogy

You could forgive Ford if he wondered to himself if this was the defining, "Ed Wood" moment of Star Wars production.

What with the actors having to make the set, effectively the special effects, work on camera.

What was the intention with this scene? How does this it fit in to the story?

I'd love to know that myself. I'm not aware we have any information on these scenes "inside" the Falcon during the Battle of Endor, which is somewhat odd considering that obviously the interior set of the Falcon (and the gunport) was built for ROJ but never used except for these scenes!

Of course we should have already wondered at the first sight of a Rebel commando (!) inside the cockpit:

tries to provide a rationalization, but that doesn't explain at all (IMHO) why these Rebel commandos carry heavy guns inside the Falcon.

Ackbar stated "General Calrissian has volunteered to lead the fighter attack" but apparently Lando would have done so with another fighter, until Solo persuaded him otherwise:
"I want you to take her. I mean it. Take her. You need all the help you can get."

Did that imply that the bulky Falcon would really fly into the Death Star or would Lando have only used her to supervise the fighter attack? The deleted scenes seem to suggest some kind of Plan B, i.e. had the fighters been destroyed on their way to the reactor core, perhaps Lando would have attempted to board the Death Star with the Falcon and have these commandos try to take over the Death Star's main control room.
But since there weren't enough Alliance fighters left by the time the deflector shield had been destroyed, Lando decided to lead the attack regardless. [face_dunno]

P.S. It's also possible that once Han had given him the Falcon, Lando on the fly recruited B-Wing pilot Nien Numb as a copilot and Rebel commandos to man the gunports, hence they brought their weapons along.

Falcon interior footage starts at 6:03 minutes:
