This reminds me of one of my favorite authors. Octavia Butler is a black female science fiction writer with books about aliens and technology and biology that are so well written. She has a fantasticly strong point of view that is, in my experience, unique in science fiction, plus she is great with the science part, which I get picky about (obviously outside of SW lol). Whenever she comes up, though, she seems to be mostly (exclusively?) remembered for a time travel book about slavery. I can just imagine publishers when she came to them with her books of aliens, technology, and apocalyptic themes. It’s amazing she got them published.

There really needs to be more pressure on the film industry and on LF specifically to get different points of view for their movies. I really don’t understand why they are so resistant. Diversity of storytelling, from different perspectives, keeps the stories fresh and interesting. Unique. I never cared about Marvel, but GotG I loved. It felt different. SW needs some of that.

He just has seniority because he worked with Lucasfilm for so long in the past(specially Lucas).

What movies did his son direct?

It does make LFL appear to be "behind". Love or hate any of the pre-Disney films but they always were used as vehicles to push the boundaries of available FX and be slightly more forward thinking in approach.
A white man. I should be set.

and directed & wrote "In the Land of Women"
L.A. soft-porn writer Carter Webb is frustrated enough, after his actress girlfriend dumps him, to need a serious break. He decides to spend it with his grandmother, who can't really take care of herself and her Detroit suburb house anyway. Helpful Carter soon overcomes mishaps to bond with the foxy neighbor across the street and her daughters. Helping them actually helps him regain perspective and self-confidence.

Wish we saw more of Paige (Rose's sister). Felt more relatable to her than Rey frankly.

I thought we could see Paige and Rose having scenes together. It's the second time a woc is killed in the first minutes of Star Wars movie

TFA: Korr Sella died in her first scene
TLJ: Paige Tico died in her first scene

TFA: Finn end the movie in a coma
TLJ: Rose end the movie in a coma

With Black Panther's massive opening weekend, hopefully we can finally put to rest the idea that casting and marketing POC as leads in a mainstream blockbuster is just too risky. It was ridiculous before but downright untenable now. Black Panther is making bank BECAUSE OF its majority black cast, not in spite of it. Hope KK and the rest of LFL keeps that in mind the next time they're mulling over which white brunette to cast in their next movie.

I came here just to post this, but you beat me to it.

This is the second biggest Marvel opening ever, ahead of everything but the first Avengers movie. I guess all of that "allow the market economy to work" stuff from this thread is null and void, eh guys? Perhaps POC don't kill Box Office after all.

At least Paige had one line --one name she called out. Sella's got axed.

Maybe they should keep lando out of the mix

    http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory/black-panther-shows-inclusion-pays-box-office-53196753
"But when Hollywood does manufacture a must-see theatrical event, it has increasingly been propelled by the power of inclusivity. Just as Jordan Peele's Oscar-nominated "Get Out" ($253 million worldwide on a $4.5 million production budget) and Patty Jenkins "Wonder Woman" ($821.1 million) did before it, "Black Panther" captured the zeitgeist by the potent combination of top-notch filmmaking (the film stands at 97 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), studio backing and an audience hungry to see itself represented on the big screen in a way it seldom has before.

At the box office, inclusion is paying — and often, it's paying off big time.

"Diversity does in fact, sell," said Darnell Hunt, a professor and director of social science at UCLA whose research has detailed the connection between diversity and bottom lines. "In hindsight, it's kind of a no-brainer. The American public is about 40 percent people of color now, and we know that people of color over-index in terms of media consumption. The patterns we've been seeing are only becoming more pronounced as time goes on."

I haven't seen Black Panther, superhero movies aren't my thing. But what's with the sudden obsession about 'inclusivity'? Is Black Panther really a departure from the representation POC have had for as long as I can remember? Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson and many other black actors have been amongst the most popular movie stars in some of the biggest blockbusters for decades. Honestly asking, why is this an issue now? I thought we were long past it.

Denzell Washington, too. I think the argument would be, these gentlemen may have lead roles, but they are surrounded by predominately white casts otherwise. Black Panther is the other way around, and it is set in a non 'urban' environment. If there has ever been a film that depicts a fantasy culture made up of people of African descent, I am unaware of it. THAT is the difference.

To echo @SaintKenobi1322 this is also a film full of black people who cover a wide range of characters, none of whom adhere to black stereotypes presented on-film. There are no thugs, con-men, shuffling morons, ex-cons, noble savages, hyper-sexualized women (or men), or drug addicts, etc., to be seen in this movie. The closest we get to the "trying to save tha' hood" stereotype is actually more of a well-intentioned extremist. I'll grant that if you squint real hard, the titular character could be called a Magical Negro, but it is a superhero movie after all...

The article I linked above states that the American public is about 40% POC. Therefore, the fact that there are a handful of big stars that are MOC really isn't all that meaningful in the bigger picture.

Having a black superhero getting the same treatment as Iron Man, Thor and Captain America by the juggernaut that is Marvel/Disney is a big deal. For years, superhero movies had white leads. We had Batman, Spiderman, Green Lantern, Superman etc. There was Blade, but now Black Panther is getting the MCU treatment.

Morgan Freeman and Samuel Jackson are mostly supporting characters in those blockbusters, as far as I remember. Eddie Murphy does comedy. Its like saying that Wonder Woman isn't a big deal because Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan and Whoopi Goldberg were a big box-office stars.

Just because we can name a couple of actors who had box-office success doesn't mean we've moved past this.
Less that 2 years ago there were people in this thread saying that movies makes more money with white people and that the percentage of population makes it hard for Lucasfilm to have woc in their movies. While Marvel have Tessa, Lupita, Danai, Letitia and Angela and it sure didn't hurt Thor Ragnarok and Black Panther. Go figure.

Marvel show us a movie where black characters really are treated with respect. Lucasfilm made our first black male lead as red herring

Well it kind of made the main female hero a red-herring as well, judging by TLJ.

Is Wonder Woman a big deal? Didn’t Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley to name two lead major blockbusters decades ago?

Maybe representation is a bigger issue in the comic book genre than in the wider movie industry.
