And here's a redone version of Green Hill Zone for Sonic Generations. It still sounds classic and keeps quite close to the original, but with a clearer, more refined sound; freed from the constraints of the Mega Drive's sound chip.

The update to this theme from Sonic Mania is also sublimely done.
    Act 1
Act 2's music is an imaginative deviation from the source, but a nice and respectable addition nonetheless.

Edit: and I would just add the entirety of Sonic Unleashed's soundtrack, but here's some highlights:

Planet Wisp Act 1 is so peaceful and relaxing, yet because the percussion holds a high tempo, it's also upbeat. One of the standouts of the series. Regardless of the quality of the games themselves, you can always count on Sonic games to have a great soundtrack.

Speaking of Sonic music, this one is a favourite of mine.

Shouldn't you really hate that game, what with all its cutscenes depicting Europeans as Americans and using American military equipment?

I'm going to live concert in January, so here's some of the best tracks from Dear Esther:

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) follows up with even more memorable music:

    Chemical Plant Zone
Mystic Cave Zone / 2-player co-op alternative theme
    Oil Ocean Zone
    Metropolis Zone
    Hidden Palace Zone
    Co-op score results

Or just listen to the ending credits medley.

While Green Hill Zone was the most iconic stage of the first game, both visually and musically, Chemical Plant Zone probably shares its iconic status with Casino Night Zone in the visual department. But there's no doubt that Chemical Plant has the most memorable music from the entire game. Once again, Sonic Generations' redone version updates the theme while keeping just enough from the original. Sonic Mania's take is more daring, but inspired: Act 1, Act 2.

Two development teams were assigned to develop the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog independently of each other. The original game's designer envisioned a bit of a thematic departure for the sequel, incorporating time travel as the narrative conceit to put the player in four possible versions of the same stage: a present version, a past version and - depending on your performance in the past and present - either a good or a bad future. This concept eventually wound up becoming the spin-off title Sonic the Hedgehog CD (1993). The other team's game, which stayed more in line with the original, became the standard numbered sequel.

Somewhat curiously, this title has two different regional soundtracks. I would have thought the cause for this was the strong accent of the vocalist in the original title song but the entire soundtrack is different in the North-American release. In general, I think the original Japanese soundtrack is superior, but both are worth checking out. Particularly for the Japanese soundtrack, I can just recommend the whole thing in one fell swoop. One of the things that makes it strong in my opinion, is that the whole thing has a very strong cohesive identity. It all feels of one piece.

You very much have to put yourself in the mindset of a child to enjoy the vocals on both versions, but the instrumental tracks are catchy regardless.

Some examples from the American soundtrack:
    Stardust Speedway Zone (present)
    Stardust Speedway Zone (good future)
    Stardust Speedway Zone (bad future)
And of course the intro cartoon with the song Sonic Boom

Some examples from the global (Japanese) soundtrack:
    Palmtree Panic (present)
    Palmtree Panic (past)
    Palmtree Panic (good future)
    Palmtree Panic (bad future)
    Final boss battle

Do yourself a favour and check out both of these playlists:
    North-American soundtrack
    Japanese soundtrack

And finally, the Japanese end-of-stage mini-boss battle music ("eat your ****in' Santa!") :p

I have a special place for this game, I've always thought it was way better than FFVII. The soundtrack is so evocative for me. The game required grinding, and I overdid it to stupid extremes (walking through most of the dungeons in the game with ease), resulting in a stupid amount of hours on this game, listening to the themes.

Skip the opening song (I don't remember it being in the game at all) and go to the title at 1:31 to give it a fair chance.

To this day I find myself whistling the jaunty Rim Elm theme (6:39), it was the opening town, your character's home town. And that sweet, sweet Genesis Tree (21:27) totally felt like saving something precious. Anyway, the soundtrack was ridiculously melodramatic, trying to play on a child's heartstrings like a fairy tale.

What with 2017's amazing bounty of games I have, of course, mostly been ****ing around with Super Robot Wars games I've beaten several times already.

Also this one is probably cheating but whatever, I love the Stoner Sunshine theme too much:

I usually browse the boards with an old tablet that struggles mightily with video-heavy pages, so in pure self-interest, I will post my contributions as links instead of embeds. There is a similar topic in the JCC that I occasionally post in. I might as well copy my contributions from there:

The original Sonic the Hedgehog from 1991 has a very memorable soundtrack. Green Hill Zone is by now etched in stone as both a classic of the Sonic series and the medium as a whole. Some other notable themes are Marble Zone and the Final Zone / Facing Dr. Eggman themes.

And here's a redone version of Green Hill Zone, done for Sonic Generations. It still sounds classic and keeps quite close to the original, but with a clearer, more refined sound; freed from the constraints of the Mega Drive's sound chip.

The updates to this theme from Sonic Mania are also sublimely done:
    Act 1

I think my favorite music from any of the Sonic games (at least those that I've played) was from Wing Fortess Zone of Sonic 2. It's like an anthem.

The games with the greatest soundtracks I’ve played are definitely The Witcher 3, Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3. They’re like top quality film soundtracks. They just add so much to the games to make them even more of a masterpiece than they already are.

    An example from each game:
