How is this any different than a few years ago?
Back then they announced a trilogy of new episodes, a spin-off written by Kasdan and a spin-off written by Kinberg. That didn't even include Rogue One, which ended up being the first spin-off.

By 2015 there were four movies in development at the same time: TFA, TLJ, Rogue One and Solo. And that is only what was announced. For all we know the movie Kinberg is working on is still the same he was working on back then.
By 2019 we could have Episode IX, the first Rian Johnson movie, the first Benioff&Weiss movie and the Kinberg-movie in development, which would be exactly like in 2015. If all of these movies actually get worked on by 2019.

The situation hasn't changed one bit. The only thing that is different, is that they have announced sequels to some of these movies as well, which doesn't mean anything right now, because the sequels are not coming up until the first movie of each series has come out yet.

It's quite different. A few years ago we started with a new trilogy set to be episodes 7-9 and had a writer/director for one at a time. Then when spin-offs began we had a theme or concept first THEN a director/writer. Names were announced surrounding a specific film idea. Now we are getting names with no ideas or concepts. And we had one at a time but now we have 3 or 4 at the same time.

I would be happy with that. I for one would really want to see that film completed.

I don't see how. Back then it was announced that Kasdan would write a movie and that Kinberg would write a movie which would be directed by Josh Trank. Not exactly a whole lot of ideas or concepts there.

The number of movies hasn't changed, it is still exactly the same amount of movies in development as back then. Everything else is completely irrelevant. A movie in development is a movie in development, regardless of whether they attach a random character to it or not. Knowing 0.001% about the project (who writes it) or knowing a different 0.001% about it (a title or character) doesn't really make any difference at all.
As a matter of fact, when talking about the Benioff&Weiss series, it was made clear that they would take a specific bit of the franchise and go from there, so it most definately has a theme or a concept. The public not knowing about any specifics yet is neither new (again, see the original Kinberg project) nor does it make the movie itself any different.

Kingberg helped create Rebels (Exec producer, co-wrote the pilot ep) and has writing credits on some of it's best episodes. As lame duck as Apocalypse was, he definitely already has some solid Star Wars cred already established. (and Days of Future Past is flat-out great)
