On the other hand, while spice in Dune has positive properties (extending the user's lifespan) we're told people with a high spice intake who stop taking it, die horribly.

 

If the spice that Han was transporting was legal, why dump it? It was probably obtained illegally or underhandedly and he ultimately suffers the consequences. Good thing he makes some friends a long the way to unfreeze him later.
