I liked it as well. It was kind of like architects designing skyscrapers.

But it was just never going to fly when the same model was going to be composited multiple times in the same scene or even shot -- onscreen evidence already put the lie to that conceit before it was even thought up. So I'm with Nick -- nice idea, but moot.

Or we can give some "creative licence" and imagine those ships are all slightly different, even though we know in real life ILM just used one model ;)

I often imagine what some of the ships from the ROTJ novelisation look like - Corellian battle ships (essentially CR90 corvettes), Calamarian tankers, Sullustan cargo freighters (Quasar Fire-class cruisers), Alderaanian gunships (DP20 frigates), Kesselian blockade runners, Bestinian sky hoppers and manowars.

I've also "visualised" assault ships from my personal OCs.

In Canon or Legends, were there any instances of surrendered Imperial ships other than Star Destroyers being used by the New Republic or allied systems? With as many TIE Fighters, shuttles, and cruisers available, I wondered if any got reissued to NR forces or just got recycled into newer ships.

Agreed. When I initially read that lore tidbit, my first thought was "Wow, that sounds like it will create a load of unnecessary headaches for whoever is in charge of maintaining these ships". I mean, I get that Star Wars has this underlying theme where the Bad Guys are uniform in style and design, while the Good Guys are diverse, but I think they went a little too far with that idea.

Off the top of my head, in Canon there's the Raider Corvette in the Battlefront 2 campaign. In Legends for the X-wing series, I seem to recall them capturing an Imperial Corellian Corvette, and using captured TIEs.

The most prominent examples of defecting or captured Imperial ships being put to use by the New Republic consist of Star Destroyers, simply because they feature more prominently in most sources, but there are some examples of other types. As JediBatman mentioned, the X-Wing series features Wraith Squadron capturing and employing an Imperial CR90 modified to serve as a pocket carrier, along with some TIEs. I think some New Republic TIE squadrons also appear later at the Battle of Adumar. The Star Wars Adventure Journal also mentions the defection of Moff Darvon Jewett of the Boeus sector after Endor, who not only brings over his territory but several capital ships which remained loyal to him and mutinied along with him. Sadly, that never got picked up further so there's no indication of what class of ships defected to the New Republic.

Indeed: both the T.I.E. line and the newer generation abdecerian line shuttles have with no doubt been manufactured after the declaration of the new order and by imperial contracts. The police gunship was most likely not available to civilian markets but the DX-9 may have been.

If any of you are on Twitter, look me up (under AdmiralNick22). This isn't a plug for followers, but rather I wanted to let you all know that I received my copy of STAR WARS: Chronicles - Episode IV, V, and VI - Vehicles. This is a book published by LFL in Japan that is chalk full of never before seen and new pics of nearly every model ship or vehicle used in the OT. A few examples:

In the case of the second picture, the book reveals that for ROTJ, ILM modified their existing CR90 Rebel Blockade Runner model to make it more militarized. Note the different turrets on the dorsal and ventral surfaces? Or the side cannons? :D

Yes, you're seeing correctly. The corvettes we see in Rebels are modeled on the ROTJ corvette type. Which, IMO, implies that the Endor variety is the more common military configuration. WOW. WOW. WOW.

Anyways, if you're interested in seeing a BUNCH of pics, you can check out my Twitter feed. :)

Wow, looks like a great book! If you got a chance you should find out if the Star Wars Identities show will show up close to you anytime soon.

They had the Liberty and Home One production models on full display (among other things).

In late 1994/early 1995, Lucasfilm had the "Art of Star Wars Exhibit" in San Francisco at the Yerba Buena Center. I was 11 years old, my parents took me and a group of friends up there. At the time, it was the largest display every of Star Wars models, costumes, and props. Mind you, this is well before digital cameras and cell phones, so I sadly don't have a treasure trove of images. IIRC, cameras were not allowed in the main hall.

Anyways, this event was a watershed for me. One part of the exhibit had every single capital ship model on display. It was the first and only time I was ever able to get like 3-4 fleet away from the models of Home One, Liberty, or the Executor. Ditto seeing Admiral Ackbar's mask, flippers, and costume. It wasn't just seeing this stuff that changed my fandom. It was in the gift shop where I first purchased the Technical Commentaries of the Rebel Alliance and purchased my first copy of the second edition of the Star Wars Encyclopedia. From that day forward, I wanted to absorb every bit of knowledge. I fell head over heels in love with starships.

I believe the Blockade Runners in Rogue One were modeled after these ones as well. I recall only the Tantive IV and Tantive III being the only lightly armed CR90's.

It does make sense from a certain point of view. Merchant ships, particularly luxury liners, aren't necessarily held to the same degree of standardization as mass-produced military vessels, and refitting them into warships under emergency conditions is going to exacerbate that. Even purpose-designed warship classes often have a fair bit of variation in internal and external features, particularly when ships are being refitted over their lifetimes.

It's a good bet that while the Rebellion-era Mon Cal cruisers may have been built off several common hull and powerplant bases, there was enough variation where a skilled observer could visually distinguish say, Home One, Independence, and Defiance from each other.

Thanks for posting these, it was a very interesting watch. It's pretty cool that they bothered to militarize those CR-90s more heavily and I never realised how gigantic the TESB AT-ST (it seems more heavily armed too). Hopefully it will receive a proper designation one day.

There’s the Far Orbit Project from WEG, where the crew of an Imperial Nebulon B mutinies, kills the captain, and joins the Rebellion.

Pretty much everyone did this, to be fair - not least because the process was fairly straightforward... ;)

I broadly agree on the TIEs (though I wouldn't exclude the idea of a much older twin-pod Sienar shuttle that shares the basic framework of the TIE version) - but for vehicles like the multiplicity of and the standard shuttle designs, I don't think . The stormtrooper gunship in REBELS definitely is a decades-old civilian design (though admittedly the ones we see in TCW are Coruscant cop cars)...

As @Greybook and @jSarek have pointed out, these don't correspond to the standard Imperial uniform, and have been characterised as special unique armour.

I wasn't sure if you might be referencing the similarity to the separate "Jedi armour" tradition (which I'd find hard to disagree with), or the resemblance of the underlying leather outfit to the obscure but movie-canonical uniform jacket that can be worn over the Imperial jumpsuit (which I'm not at all sure how to rationalise, and which no-one really seems to have noticed); either way, I can see Vader's costume being a sort of "uniform", but not in any sense what you'd normally expect to find on the quarterdeck...

Looks like they were inspired by the same ESB concept-art, but there are differences, notably the use of an Executor-like fantail aft in place of the boxy extention of the command tower in the original... [face_thinking]

Yes. Before the internet ate the original version of this reply, I'd managed to make a list of at least one example of every Imperial capital-ship type taken over and used by the Rebellion / NR or their allies... [face_peace]

I didn't know that other nations had need to. I just knew this was part of Germany's clandestine rearmament efforts after the Treaty of Versailles.

This Vader-like jacket has eluded me. Where can it be seen?

Oh no! That list would have been interesting; I'm quite disappointed the Interned devoured it. :-(

The Spitfire and Mosquito are the most obvious examples, both based on private-venture racing planes (in the UK, the aircraft companies generally had a better idea of what was needed than the government - Geoffrey de Havilland's ability to spin up side projects at short notice was particularly vital to the RAF); France bombed Berlin in 1940 using what was officially a big civilian mail plane, and the American C3 and T3 merchant ship types were designed to be taken up by the USN - the thinking was that they would become support ships, though in the end they were the basis of the escort-carrier designs...

With regard to ships, the idea of turning liners into cruisers had been taken up by pretty much everyone as early as the 1870s, though the Germans had been among the most efficient adopters of the idea - their ocean liners before 1914 steamed around with their guns in the hold and navy reservists in the crews to take up the specialist positions when required, although the policy that they should be specifically built to light cruiser specifications was introduced too late to really cause a problem...

On the nearest gunner to the camera when the DS2's flak emplacements are firing at the X-wings!

    http://imperialgunnercorps.netfirms.com/CRL/jacket2.jpg

I now wonder if the leather jacket that Tavira wears over a TIE Pilot jumpsuit as undress uniform in I, Jedi is the same style...

A lot of "reproduction" versions of Vader's costume skimp on the padded detail under the shoulder armour, but behind-the-scenes shots from rehearsals confirm the similarity of pattern - I'm not totally sure whether they share the unpadded back of the uniform version, but that's obviously not seen on screen...

I can do most of them from memory...

CR90 Corvette - the Night Caller in the X-wing novels...
Nebulon-B Escort Frigate - the Far Orbit, already mentioned by @Daneira
Lancer-class Frigate - Whip Hand in Destiny's Way, though this wasn't the one I'd thought of originally, and now forget...
Carrack-class light cruiser - Dominant, surrendered to NR-allied Bakura in The Truce at Bakura
    Ton Falk
-class Escort Carrier - the XvT games give us several of these in Rebel service; the wook lists Prowler 1, Prowler 2, and Gallant (REBELS of course gives us the Quasar Fire-class Phoenix Nest)
Star Galleon - Karrde's Lastri's Oort, NR-allied by the end of the Thrawn Trilogy
Strike Cruiser - the Rebel interdictor Peregrine in XvT: Balance of Power
    Vindicator
-class heavy cruiser - the Molator, ex-Savrip, in Starships of the Galaxy
    Immobilizer
-class interdictor - the Corusca Rainbow, ex-Black Asp in the first three X-wing novels and Dark Tide: Ruin...

VSDs and ISDs are numerous and I'd imagine that the two SSDs are well-enough-known that I don't need to name them...

Don't forget the ISD Skyhook. Captured by New Republic forces with its entire starfighter complement intact, she was part of the Solo Fleet that hunted Zsinj and the only Star Destroyer in Solo's fleet to have its entire starfighter complement consist of TIE's.

More like the individualized uniforms of the paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party, like Goering's etc. Which is again, appropriate for George Lucas's reference points with regards to the Empire.

It could be argued that the gunship was designed to almost look like a TIE-line vehicle (notice the canopy's shape and the solar panels) and as far as I remember the only law-enforcement agency which made use of it were the Shocktrooper corps, which also employed military-grade weaponry and armors.
About the shuttles, I'm not sure. Sentinels are most likely military-only given their specific troop transport role. While I do recall seeing civilian Lambdas in legends, but I'm also pretty sure that the RO-UVG made it clear that it was an imperial military contract.

Plus, the gunship was originally made for Underworld, an Imperial-era tv show. If anything, the design was always supposed to be the successor to the Republic-era gunship. Because Underworld was shelved in 2010, Lucas re-appropriated the design for the later seasons of TCW, along with other elements for the live-action show, such as the Coruscant Underworld, Level 1313, the Pykes and Saw Guerrera.
