School reports and Star Wars
We've all done it. . .
or may have done it. ..
we've used star wars at some point in a report for school and made it work. . .
I've probably done it more than I should, but it's fun, and sometimes gets us good grades.. .
Have you done it before?

RE: School reports and Star Wars
Most recently in my Germanic Mythology course we were asked "If you could do a production of Wagner's the Ring. . . how would you do it"
mine is below. .
~~~~~~~~~~~
When presented with the issue of doing a version of the Ring that sprung completely from my mind, a singular thought passed through my mind. In a fantasy world I would be able to bring in characters from modern day fiction, and have them play the characters that may well have been their predecessors. Also bringing in the recent popularity of Reality TV by after key points of action freezing the stage and having the actors reflect on not only their character, but how the character they are portraying may have been inspiration for their ‘real life’ being.
Having Luke Skywalker prance across stage as Siegmund woo-ing Sieglinde as played by Leia Organa, or having a Mime Obi-wan Kenobi wondering in a pop out about if he was really just using Luke (his Siegfreid) as a tool to complete his work. Not only did I run into issues of interrupting the flow of the music, an integral part of Wagner’s vision, but also that not all the present day characters I wanted to involve were from the same current story. Many of the characters were from Star Wars as that is the story I am most familiar, but I also had wanted to bring in aspects from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, C.S Lewis’s Narnia and even pulling characters from the Disney movies of my youth.
The issues with this situation being not only the difficulties with combining characters from multiple worlds with Wagner’s storyline, but also the combined facts that adding in pop-ups would break up the continuity of the music and make a 12 hour opera into a 16+ hour monstrosity.
Instead of organizing it as the above I would direct my version directly to the Star Wars fandom. Again, because I know this story arch much better than I do the other ones. The people playing the characters would in fact be playing two characters: The Star Wars character, and their Wagnerian equivalent. The would-be cast list is attached to the report.
In lieu of stopping the action or interrupting the flow of the music, yet keeping the vision of tying the characters together on stage for the audience, there would be two options. First off the Opera would run alternating between the actual staging of the Opera and a seemingly open conference with the ‘characters’ as lead by a characterized Wagner or Lucas in between. Each actor would be prompted to speak, in character, about their reactions to key developments in Wagner’s opera. At this time, video clips of the previous night’s opera would be shown. Instead of having the feel of a Reality TV show, it would end up more like a football, post game commentary. This way it would invite an active look into the considerations of both sets of characters, while not interrupting the continuity of Wagner’s work. To accommodate this new break down of the Operas it would run through the course of two weeks. Friday night of the first week being DasRhiengold, with Saturday nights ‘performance’ being the character introspection while on Sunday, the actors would perform DieWalkerie as a matinee with the introspection following. The same set up would follow the next week with Siegfried and Gotterdamerung.
Of course not everybody would be interested in sitting in for the introspection, or willing to pay the extra entrance fees. Therefore, at each performance of the Opera section, that section in DVD format would be on sale after the performance. The DVD would have the option of viewing the introspection as extras, or over-laying the main action in reality TV form.
Since Star Wars fashions can be relatively close to the medieval fare, it would not be difficult to dress the actors in stylized Star Wars costumes. Of course there could be some differences, for instance the character’s clothing would fit the scene a little more closely. Those playing the Rhinedaughters would obviously need to darn more mermaid-esque clothing, while their normal fair would be fine for the norns. Luke would need costume changes from playing Siegmund, to Siegfreid and possibly even a costume change when he leaves Gunther’s court originally. Possibly from his naieve dessert whites to his darker costume for Return of the Jedi, perhaps even with the camouflage cape from Endor. Some of the women’s attire would have to be at the least their more flowy garments. Along the lines of Leia’s clothes from A New Hope, Bespin, or Padme’s from while on Naboo in Attack of the Clones. Keeping Brunhilde’s clothing in line with what Mara usually wears will help to offset Brunhilde from the other Characters. Brunhilde is a warrior in her own right, so the more militaristic jumpsuit would suit not only her, but the other Valkaries as well.
As the Star Wars universe holds worlds of innumerable type and climate there would not be an issue even in keeping with the settings given by Wagner. Any buildings used could be any number of things, hovels like Yoda’s or Obi-wan’s house, the inside of a ‘used future’ space ship, to the interior of the Palace on Naboo, with the Death Star acting as Valhalla.
Throughout the production the differences and similarities would drive home the point that where the characters may change, the story remains constant. No matter where these characters reside, in time, location or even in other works, the main themes of the story stay the same. For each of us the struggle between the want of love and power leaves a path of destruction in not only our own lives but also the lives of those we love. In relating the original characters to those more recent characters, and then opening those more recent characters to self inspection the production would be opening the door for the audience to make their on reflections on how their own life may mirror that of one of the characters.
Wotan: Anakin/vader
Father like, war god, torn between love and power, wanting to do the right thing but not always succeeding, dressed in a lightened version of the Vader outfit sans helmet, wears a jedi cloak with hood up as the Wanderer.
Fricka: Padme
Who else would be able to give Anakin Skywalker a talking too, or hold any sway over him at all. With a Sharp tongue and a royal background, Padme is the most like Fricka
Brunhilde: Mara
At one point Wotan comments that Brunhilde is an extension of his will. In the Star Wars Books a character was introduced that was once the Emperor Hand. Palpentine’s own private assassin who carried out his express will. Trained in assassination and covert ops since her youth, Mara is a formidable and strong willed woman. She too ends up saving the man her master told her to kill. As Brunhilde did after giving herself to Siegfreid, the books portray Mara as softening considerably after marring Luke, however both are still able to be tough as nails when the situation calls for it.
Introduced in Timothy Zahn’s “Heir to the Empire”
Sieglinde: Leia
Leia makes the moves on a man who is saving her from certain doom. How was she supposed to know that he’s her brother?
Sigmund: Luke
Stuck on a moisture farm all his life, the first girl he really has interest in is a damsel in distress. He didn’t know he had a twin sister. Risking life and limb to help the underdog while his father turns out to be his enemy. Dressed as Luke during his training on Dagobah
Siegfried: Luke
Playing both the Father and the son, yet either way playing the offspring of Wotan. Naive and raised by those not his real parents, Luke longs to go off and fight for the side of the light, and adventure.
Mime: Obi-wan
Helps to raise or protect a child not his own, that should have never been born, His will is for this child to grow up and do a job he could not.
Obi-wan as played by Alec Guiness
Alberich: Xizor
‘Prince Xizor’ was the head of a criminal syndicate deeply rooted into Coruscant and the galaxies underworld. One of the few rivals of Vaders, would use any means possible to obtain power, especially if that position had the possibility of usurping Vader’s.
Xixor was introduced in Steve Perry’s “Shadows of the Empire”
Gunther: Lando
Essentially a good guy who gets stuck in a bad situation and has to behave the best he can and uphold his oaths the best he can.
Hagen: Borsk Fey’la
In the Star Wars books Borsk is a political rival of Leia’s. Like Xizor he would do anything he could to obtain the height of power. However, since he is part of the new republic and not an imperial, he is viewed as at least acceptable as a character.
Introduced in Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire
Hunding: Watto
Not necessarily a bad guy, but one with different moral ideals than our main characters. Watto has no qualms owning slaves, as Hundling had no qualms kidnapping a girl then taking her as his wife.
Gurtrude: Callista
In the star wars books, was brought in as a love interest for Luke, was not viewed as the most moral or emotionally stable of characters. Seemed very one dimensional. . .
Introduced in Barbara Hambly’s “Children of the Jedi”
Froh: Teneniel
In the star wars books, tenenial is a young warrior maid that marries into a Matriarchal society, as a queen and leader. This leader is generally known for their beauty.
Loge: Qui-Gon
Although generally viewed as going against the council, he generally does what needs to be done. In most cases the council knows this, but has to reprimand him anyway.
Erda: Mon Mothma
An elder states woman known for her wisdom and determination
Fassolt: Chewie
A large kind hearted character, with strong convictions.
Fafner: Boba Fett
Armored and less scrupulous than Chewie, Boba Fett is a formidable opponent not only for Vader, but also our other heros.
Donner: Han
Quick tempered and always ready for a fight, but with the best intentions in mind.
Rhinegold daughters: winter, mirax, tionne
Norns: Leia, Callista, Mon Mothma
Valkaries:
Helmwige:Winter,
One of Leia’s closest friends, handmaidens, also a warrior
Rossweisse: Mirax,
Daughter of a head of a smuggler band, also a warrior
Siegrune: Tionne,
One of Luke’s new Jedi, seen as the new Jedi Chronicler
Waltraute: Teneniel,
See above
Grimgerde: Callista,
Schwertleite:Leia,
