DLP in Dallas and Plano, anyone?
Did anyone go to the 1st DLP showing of AOTC at that Cinemark in Plano when it was released three years ago? I remember going to the midnight showing at AMC Willowbrook. It kinda sucked because the 35mm print projected all blury . It seemed out of focus. I thought it was just the projector in that house, but I saw it three more times that weeek at different theaters. (Tinsletown Woodlands, Magic Johnson, Edwards Marque) It was the same everywhere. I started to think that maybe there was problem with the transfer from the digital master to the film prints.(this was the 1st movie to be shot & chopped digitally, but then transfered to film for distribution. The film versions of 'Once Upon a Time in Mexico, & Sin City seemed to look sharper in regular theaters. They were both also made digitally. Maybe there was an improvement with the transfer process by then?) A couple a months later, I took a road trip to Plano to see if DLP was worth the hype. The Cinemark in Plano has a DLP house.(probably funded by coke & heroin money accumulated in the Plano area during the 90s) It was a HUUUGE difference!! Crystal clear. Like watching through a window! I almost wondered if the film prints were purposly blured to force people to seek out the digital presentation. It worked on me. The later Imax version was much sharper lookin' than the regular film version, but no where near the DLP. That was then. This is my delema now.... Okay. This is the last Star Wars movie ever. I want to experience it for the first time the best possible way. I'm trekin' up to Plano on May 18th to try to get to the first showing, but I don't know if they will have a midnight screening. Did anyone go to Plano on opening day for AOTC? Was there a midnight showing? If not, was it chaos getting tickets for the first showing opening morning? I'm hoping to get tickets online as soon as they go on sale. I need to see the DLP version as soon as possible to avoid any smart-ass shouting out major spoilers as they exit the theater and pass the waiting line. "Who woulda' thunk that Jar Jar was Obi-Wan's mother/uncle"! Anyone out there with tha down-low? Anyone?... Also, I see that there is....another...DLP in Dallas. The Magnolia on Mckinney Ave? Dammit! Why does the metro Dallas area have two DLP theaters, and H-Town has none! Any help would be nice, me'sa thinks.

I'd like to make a roadie to Plano to see ROTS in a DLP theater, but it would have to be on a weekend. That rules out the midnight showing.
And just to confirm what plormf77 said about Episode II in digital, I caught a DLP screening in NYC and there was no comparison. Visually, it put the film version to shame. The best analogy I can think of is imagine watching a movie on VHS and then watching it on DVD.
Oh, and the possibility that the DLP version of ROTS will have an extra scene or two is yet another reason to give it a look.

Legacy will have ROTS on DLP. That's the theater that the Dfwff will be camping out for starting April 30th. Y'all are welcome to join us of course.

Plano will have a midnight showing of ROTS in DLP, I can promise you that. I would suggest contacting the theater itself for information. Also, talk to people in the Dallas-Ft. Worth FanForce. They'll have
much
better information than most of us down here.
I know they plan line-ups and such, I just don't know where they do their midnight showings.
AOTC in DLP was excellent. I saw it twice in Plano, but nowhere near openning night. I plan on doing the same for ROTS...heading up there one day in the summer. Personally, I thought the IMAX version was terrible.
EDIT - I hate you, Amanda, and this dial-up internet crap I'm dealing with.

AOTC was slightly different in DLP. Some of the wipes were different. When slasher-happy Ani lopped the dome off the Tusken Raider, you actually saw the head go flying out of frame as the wipe swept across the screen! Padme held Ani's robo-claw during the wedding scene. Not that any of this matters now. I think all the changes were included in the DVD version. I've read that ANH had slightly different lines of dialog for 3PO in the mono, stereo,& 70mm versions when it first hit theaters back in the day. I think I remember ROTJ having 'Dukes of Hazzard' style banjo getaway music during the speederbike chase when it was first in theaters in '83. ...maybe my childhood memories are just melding together? My head hurts.

Yeah I saw Sin City with my girlfriend and two friends @ the Legacy.
I decided that's where I wanna see ROTS.
Any idea on when their tickets will go on sale?

Hey guys, it's been a while
Anyways, a friend of mine that works at AMC says rumors are floating around in the company that the AMC in Willowbrook might be getting a DLP projector soon. I know we would all be happy campers if they do

That would be sweet, and incredibly overdue for the fourth largest city in the nation.

BY THE POWER OF GREYSKULL!! THAT WOULD BE FREEEKIN' AWSOME!!! Willowbrook is like 10 min away from my crib! Ever since I saw AOTC in DLP, it's been hard to watch movies in regular theaters knowing that there is something much better out there. It's sad when you can have a much better set up at home than what they can offer in a movie theater. At least the Alamo Draft House has a gimmick to get you in the door. Drinkin' & grubbin' while checkin out cult classics. If only it was centraly located in Houston instead of waaaaaaay out west. Unlike the other 3/4 of Houston's population, I don't live on the west side. Bring on DLP to H-town. These people don't know what their missing!

I was seriously thinking about flying home towards the end of May or early June and going up to Dallas for ROTS. But then I did a search and discovered that there are 4 theaters withing 30 miles of here with DLP screens. Maybe this place isn't such a hellhole after all.

Well, if you are a fan of Alamo Drafthouse then I have some more potentially good news for you. That same friend at AMC has a good friend that works for the Lowes theater in Spring. She told him that a new theater was getting built in Spring and it wasn't a Lowes. My friend says it's not an AMC and it couldn't be a Cinemark since there is one right up the road in The Woodlands so that leaves only Regal or Alamo. He's betting on Alamo himself

I'm in Washington DC.
Looking at the list posted on TFN, it seems like 2 of those theaters will have ROTS. Now I need to go see a couple of movies todetermine which one is better.
