Hi All,
It's awfully quiet around here so I thought that a this would be a good topic of lively conversation. What are your feelings on the often conflicting messages of Jedi Philosophy?
It seems to me that, as presented, those that follow the jedi path are either not human or doomed to failure. The concept of denying love, anger, passion et all is ludicrous to me. It's one thing to control your emotions and something entirely different to try to rid yourself of them.
What think you?

I deny people my love all day long. Its one of the ten major parts of my style.

I thought it was weird how in the books and the graphic novels(mind you all given approval by Lucas) the jedi are quite different than the movies. In the movies they aren't allowed families, or love etc. In the books, the jedi had families, kids, wives etc. It seemed to me that for some reason they changed it, maybe believing that by allowing emotion in a jedi's life, it was a trap door to the dark side. I don't know.....
I do live a life myself not blinded by emotion, I rather think things out, look at situations at all perspectives, primarily trying to be neutral. I'm far from a monk trust me, but we all know friends/family that are ruled by their emotions and are constantly flawed by them as they cannot control their own feelings at times. I don't trust them with a cheese grater. This would be dangerous teritory for a jedi, the force reacts to the jedi and his feelings, in a emotional state he may accidently trigger something in the force that may cause harm to others.
But hey maybe one day Lucas will tell us why he wrote the code that way. Seems extreme to me, but hey if it works.....

It's funny you mention this. I've been playing in a Star Wars RPG (the coffee table kind, not the Internet crap) since December, and I've been very strict in playing my character. My GM loves throwing emotional garbage at her, and since she's the only Jedi in the party, the rest of the PC's don't seem to get it. I perceive them to be a very lonely sort of folks, and yes, probably doomed to failure. Luke's loosening of the relationship restrictions during The New Jedi Order makes sense to me, but then again how do Catholic priests and Tibetan monks pull it off? It's a point to ponder.

GM: "Um, that'll be six dark side points." Me: "Six?! Why?" GM: "One, you're pissed. Two, you used move object to throw the Emperor's chair at her. Three, you rolled a natural 20, it killed her, and I say so." Me: "Oh, yeah. Okay, who's next?"

Well, I've taken a look at several thoughts of the Jedi Philosophy, and one comparison someone made was that of Jedi's and Vulcans from Star Trek. Although Vulcans purged their emotions and thought purely in logic, there wasn't much difference in focus. The Jedi are sworn to these beliefs that enable them to serve as protectors of the galaxy. To remain free of emotional attachments and the complications they cause help them in their duties. Similar to any profession's code of conduct, like priests.
Now here's something to ponder on.....if Luke Skywalker's change in philosophy for the New Jedi Order had been in place during the times of the prequels, do you think Anakin would have still strayed from that path of the Jedi to the Dark Side???
Discuss........

All great heroes exude these qualities... Winston Churchill, Soupy Sales, Ryu, Kyo Kusanagi.
The list goes on and on.

Oh, and for those who study eastern philosophy (such as myself)-- the ability to purge onself of ego and passion is a major step to what one would refer to as "enlightenment".

Where is that quote from...it sounds terribly familiar...
And yes, Anakin would've turned to the dark side, but it would've taken longer and he would've been more powerful when it finally happened. Not to mention he would've been completely unredeemable. Ani's problem wasn't in the depth of his emotions, but in the fact that they ruled him. Oh, and the fact that he had people calling him by a girl's name
