Hey everyone, we're turning off our phone service at home and going to try using our cell phones instead. Anyway, we're switching ISPs too so we might be without internet for a bit. The lady at verizon said that our internet would be up until Monday, but in case something happens, you know what happened. If you need to get ahold of me, Kari has my cell phone. See you tomorrow!!!

Verizon...ugh. You too, huh?
This may seem like a tiny thing (and it is) but my bro found a torrent with all of the Star Wars books! And I mean ALL of them, from Darth Bane to LOTF! The only things this bundle is missing are the comic books and guides to the universe.
LOL, just when I was complaining about losing my library card, here come all these books right into my lap. Now here's the dilemma...which ones to read first...?

There are websites that you can go to that will let you download music, movies, pictures, books for free...that are being shared by other people.
Example: I upload my new Megadeth CD into my computer. I let other people share the CD for themselves (file sharing) and they have it now for themselves.
Some people call this illegal because the other person didn't "pay for" the content. I say that is bunk! If I make a copy of a CD and give it to you for your own use and I don't profit from it, there's nothing wrong. If I do the same thing to where it's online, then that's a problem? I have a Zune (Like an IPOD), to where I can press a button and whatever music I've got on there will go to yours totally wireless.
It's really a double standard if you truely think about it. Just my opinion.

Try telling that to the hundreds of people who lose their jobs every year as more people illegaly download items they work very hard at getting out to the public. It's not just the artists that lose out it's all the people who work for them in the industry. If it weren't for this type of activity we would not have to pay so much for DVDs, CDs, Books, Cinema Tickets etc.

I see your point, but actually it's because of all the pirated stuff that's SOLD, not shared. That is a fact. The artists are the ones who whine about their profits being dipped into, rather than making sure they put out a decent product. You don't hear about all these people losing their jobs because they can't get whatever product out there. They aren't the one who complain...it's the artists. (Metallica)
There's actually artists that don't care, as if it it gets someone to hear them and eventually buy the CD that normally wouldn't have, then thats a good thing. You can't say that if I burn a copy of a CD for you that somehow that put someone out of work...that's silly. I get your point and actually agree with you that people that distribute and sell a copyrighted whatever, then yes, that would effect people in again whatever inductry (music).
We'll just agree to disagree on this one my friend!

Well, I'll give my 2 cents on this subject, as someone who has been around the music business most of my life in some form or other. I'm a member of BMI and ASCAP and have recorded an album and know many artists that have careers etc. in music business. First, an artist usually only gets a small amount up front by record company. The rest they recieve will come after the record label collects everything they have spent to record and promote the album. The artist receives usually only about (the last time I heard)less than 10 cents per album sold. If you wrote the song also, you get a little more.A writer will get publishing rights and collect per copy sold. It's the people that sell millions and millions of copies that make the money. As they become a huge artist they will get larger advances upfront. If the album doesn't sell well, an artist may not see anything because the label took everything to recoup their fees.(artists make more money from touring and merchandise sold at concerts). For every copy that someone makes either from a friends copy or some download off the internet, that is one sale that isn't made.If you're an independant and make the product yourself, you have to recoup all the expenses yourself and that only comes when the product is sold. My ex has a tape/cd instructional series that is sold around the world. We've had in the past churches that would request to make 100-200 copies off of 1 purchased by them so they can give them to everyone in their choir. We spent thousands and thousands of dollars making that product and it has to be recouped before we'd see a profit. Of course you'd like to help everyone to get a copy, but if you give permission for one, then word gets around. We tried giving it for free when we'd get these letters begging, so sometimes we'd oblige. Next thing you know, you're getting 10 more requests as people heard about how you gave it free to someone else. There is a whole industry behind all this too. The graphics people, the people at the pressing plants etc. It's the trickle down effect just like in any industry. I'm with Stuart on this one! Metallica wasn't the only group protesting, there was a huge movement in all generes about 10 years back. Sure some bands have songs they don't care about getting copied and there usually is a reason behind it, but no band can survive by giving everything away for free all the time. It's the exception to the rule.
