Jeesh, and we wonder why some sci-fi authors scorn the GFFA????....

I'll give the Davids this much, they a lot make with little, even if their horizons, are shall we say, a little bit limited.

Are there any bookstores that are still selling GOF books?

My local Waldenbooks was selling them until I wanted to buy them.

Anyone watch the Simpsons? I like the Halloween episodes myself. See, the Halloween ones take place outside of the regular Simpson's continuity (as loose as that is) and allows for fun stories that result in characters like Flanders or Bart, etc to be killed off. But we can always rest assured that they will be back to normal in the non-Halloween (ie IN-continuity) episodes. There was one, I think it was the 4th Halloween episode, that introduced us to Ooder (spelled wrong, I know...) the foreign exchange student from Germany. It was when there was a gremlin on the side of the bus. Classic episode. And then he was in the next years Halloween episode as well, when he was eaten by the school teachers. And not long after that, the character appeared in... GASP! Regular continuity! How can that be? Does that make the Halloween Episodes part of the regular Simpsons Canon?

No, it doesn't.

Just like both Kashyyyk and Zorba were introduced out of continuity (in the holiday special, and GoDV series, respectively). How is this Simpsons example different from the many SW examples introduced in the GoDV series? I don't see any distinction. We can enjoy the GoDV series and the Simpsons Halloween Specials on their own, but they shouldn't be considered part of the regular continuity.

Holiday Special has always been part of and never will not be part of continuity. The events of the story itself, not just the elements from the story have been refrenced in other places. There is even a book devoted to it's place in continuity and making of it as well.

GODV is continuity in as much as it is known that han and leia did not get married at the end, almost all the events(not only elements) from the story have been refrenced in some way or another.

Simpsons has nothing to do with GODV or the Holiday Special, and that is a bad analogy. In that both of the star wars stories were designed to be "serious" stories of continuity by the authors, producers and editors, unlike simpsons halloween specials that were designed to be nonserious parody episodes.

Yeah..except the only difference is that so much of GoDV continuity has been referenced, Creating a new history is pointless. The history referenced has been identical to what was in GoDV. Do you have a reason to assume that the GoDV story didn't happen the way it was portrayed in the GoDV series? No? Then why do you argue that a completely different version of the story happened?> because you don't like the books?

The characters were even referenced in the first essential guide to characters. Triclops was referenced in a recent issue of Insider and so was thefact that the fake prophet Kadann was was contained for a while in the Lost City of the Jedi. (though there is a question of which Kadann died ultimately, but that's notthe issue)

It seems that GoDV is a part of the Star Wars canon. Now , if it's a personal preference to accept parts of the story and discard others, fine . But I believe the argument is whether or not the stories are apart of the official Star Wars canon. From what we've all seen so far, I believe that it is.

EDIT: guide to a star wars universe 3rd edition, published in 2000 references GoDV as well.

"EDIT: guide to a star wars universe 3rd edition, published in 2000 references GoDV as well."

Ya, that's true, it refrenced story plot points such as what Ken, Kendalina, Triclops, various Grand Moffs, Mount Yoda, etc were doing in the GODV books. Nearly all the books events were refrenced as part of continuity.

Even the Official Star Wars Encyclopedia, an in-universe document had all the same refrences, if not more.

Hissa was given a first name in Gamer 1. Bertroff Hissa.

High Prophet Jedgar was also referenced.

Yes, Val and Matt, well put. Events, characters and elements from GODV have been referenced left and right in continuity, and there is absolutely no reason to assume that everything (with the possible exception of Han and Leia's "wedding") did not occur exactly as was portrayed in the GODV books. For more information, see Valiento's references thread, which is linked on the first page of this one.

I have to apologize for leaving this project undone. Our internet connection was out of wack for quite a while, and I've had day camps in between.

I'll be heading out on a road trip soon, but regular updates can be expected to resume upon my return. happy

I like the fact that these books are accepted parts of the EU. Why? Because in my mind, it adds to the fun of it all. We can have dark, serious adventures like the NJO, and then... there's this garbage, and yet they both exist in the same universe.

Plus, where else can you find dialogue that's worse than the lines in Attack of the Clones?

Exactly! The EU is all encompassing, we can have both the Vong AND giant green bunny rabbits. wink

Although to be frank, I've always found the Vong and their bio-tech as implausible as anything GODV has to offer... happy

You know, I've always wanted Dark Horse to do a series based on these books. Not change the story or anything, just 'accidentally' leave out the goofy names of some things, and try and add a more 'adult' take on the story. It would be halfway decent if it wasn't written down to the audience. And reprint Drew Struzan's covers, the only outstanding thing about these books.

And the writers of the Holiday Special were NOT trying to make a serious piece of work. It was Pat Proft (Police Academy movies, other comedies) and Bruce Villanche (Hollywood Squares) who are comedy writers, not serious writers.

The the same can be said about Lucas's main movies stories, they aren't "serious" in your definition of the word either. HS is at about the same level of non-seriousness as those sources as well, combination of seriousness with humor. Nor were they writing a parody, but rather "another adventure in the galaxy far far away".
