New Republic Capital Ships - still sorting out the mess... (Fleet Junkies- HO!)

RE: New Republic capital ships [Black Fleet to NJO] - sorting out the mess...
A few things... I always took it that the
Mon Mothma
was
Mon Mothma
-class. I imagined a very simple 'wartime' design without many complex chunks of detailing, with only a small hangar bay, and with a deep and broadly-flared main hull to accomodate the gravity-well generators. Not sleek, but smooth and graceful.
Don't ask me why... that's just the mental image I got when the
Mon Mothma
was introduced - seen from below, from an X-wing cockpit, and set against a sea of glittering stars...
Alternatively, the design may be based on the old
Dominator
-class... adapted from the ISD spaceframe, but now with a 'larger' hull enclosing the generators and providing a bigger hangar-bay...
And speaking of gravity-well generators, what happened to Hapan pulse-mass mines, anyway? Wouldn't they play havoc with yammosks?
As to the designs - hey, nice. But with regard to the
Republic
, would Rendilli really be using a KDY tower? And speaking of KDY, which shipyards designed which classes? And just who is "Republic Engineering" made up of?
Alion_Sangre
: can't we just say that the partial invalidization of the
Cracken's Threat Dossier
illustrations (partly by WotC's
Defender
-class design, but partly by the
Black Fleet Crisis
trilogy itself - which part of 'shared spaceframes' didn't they understand?) means that we can label the whole series as an interesting aberration? I mean, the best-looking design of the lot, the frigate, looks like a Kazon Raider!

EGVV has a comprehensive manufacturers' compendium. Very useful. Lacks the Strike Cruiser and Corellian Gunship, among others, but very good.

I am still inclined to think that the New Republic most likely (or at least, most
intelligently
) wouldn't have mass-produced three destroyers that are virtually the same in size and mission profile and yet require totally different logistical support systems. Mayhap several prototypes of each class were designed and fielded (since when most of them were introduced while the Republic was still at war with the Empire), but after the war, one was chosen for true mass-production?

Thrawn
: I consider it a little dangerous to get into the "well, if this little detail doesn't make sense, the whole thing's wrong" logic. Many of the *shudder* purists we encounter in the EUDF's mission use that thinking as an argument to regard the entire EU as bunk.
The
Republic
-class was designed shortly after Endor, while the first
Defender/Nebula
didn't make it out of the yards until a year prior to the BFC. The RSD design was a halting step in the creation of an organized New Republic Order of Battle that was interrupted by Thrawn and Palpatine's assaults. Sort of like the pre-WWII US
Yorktown
-class carriers were later supplanted by the more numerous and powerful
Essex
-class carriers circa 1943 onward. Cracken's Threat Dossier suggests that the RSD, as well as the
Belarus
-class medium cruiser and the
Corona
-class line frigate, all entered production prior to TTT and were pretty much dropped after DE in favor of the New Class program.

Excellence
: is this NEGVV? Otherwise, I don't think it includes the New Classes, does it?
Brett_Bass
: space is big?
Ton_G
: I'm afraid I'm not convinced by the RSD-as-interdictor idea... sorry... I think the key thing about the
Nebula
/
Defender
is the fact that it mounts the same offensive capacities and apparently
better
shields and armour on a smaller hull with a sharply smaller crew...
Alion_Sangre
: false analogy
I accept your point about the danger in general terms, though; but what we're really pushing for in this thread is to see if WotC will listen to us and produce something
convinicing
to get the NR out of the mess it's in over its Star Destroyer types... which would mean some sort of wider answer to the fact that we have two radically-different Defender designs now...
As to the
Republic
-class ships, there's also the issue that Walex Blissex
knows
how to design Star Destroyers... it's the VSD that's the
Yorktown
- the
Republic/i] is the [i]Midway
...
But as to when the
Republic
-class entered service - it wouldn't have such a small crew before Garm Bel Iblis and Thrawn 'rehabilitated' the slave-rig circuit, would it?

NO! SPACE IS TINY!
lol
Anywho, it's just militarily impractical. I'm just fishing for a militarily satisfactory answer as to why we've got three nearly identical destroyers designed by the NR--on top of the four Imperial designs they field (
Imperial[/]-class, [i]Victory
-class,
Dominator
-class, and a pair of
Super
-class).

Thrawn McEwok, that was in the beginning section of EGVV. The second edition comes out later this year. It had all the manufacturers of starships and vehicles, obscure and known.

Brett_Bass
: the way I see it, there are two possibilities... either the
Republic
and the
Defender
were competing designs to fulfil the same 'broad' specification (say, crew less than 10k, three fighter squadrons, forty heavy TLs), or else the NSD/DSD was the successor to the RSD, a more compact and complex ship...
Excellence
: and this leaves us
where
with the Nebulas, Endurances and Defenders?
Just so long as they're all from the same stable...

Okay, we know that the RSD is the oldest and may have had a shorter prduction life, but perhaps after the BFC, it was brought back into production, the Republic shouldn't have just one class for each type of vessel, well at least I hope not. As for the New Class star destroyers, we know the most about the Nebula and the Endurance, but there is still the question over whether the Defender is a seperate ship. If it is it probably came as result of the BFC, in which the NR learned they needed bigger ships...so...they design a larger "Defender" class based on the "Nebula"...maybe.

Are there actually any WEG/WOTC stats for the Nebula-class (in name) or are they just for the so-called Defender-class?
AFIAK the Nebula-class length is only from K-Mac's BFC FAQ page.

Hmm... the
Nebula
shares a spaceframe with the
Endurance
; the
Endurance
is 1,040m; the
Defender
is also 1,040m:
ergo
the
Nebula
is the same length as the
Endurance
- 1,040m...

The length isn't an issue but I was wondering if there were any actual published WEG/WOTC RPG stats for the Nebula-class, where it actually says "Nebula-class", in case it in fact has different weapons and equipment systems from the stats for the "Defender-class"...
