Honestly, is it such a big deal?

I mean, I've become a lot less interested in Star Trek since it seems to have run its course and become kind of repetitive and unimaginative - and the man who took over from Roddenberry telling a lot of fans that continuity doesn't matter kind of made me sick (any ongoing series needs continuity - ongoing: there's a past, a present and a future. Continuity. That's just stupid, possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard and a good indication of why ST has gone south.)

But we see these kind of homages to other genres, creators and franchises all the time. Just in the past two or three days I've seen a couple of blatant ones:

Didn't anyone notice the Tremors/Dune sand worm creature in JK: Jedi Academy?

In an episode at the climax of Farscape season 3, they do a scene that is intentionally a tribute to the ceremony at the end of A New Hope (it even says as much on the DVD.) Except they aren't getting any medals, in typical Farscape tradition they're about to be screwed over, and/or screw someone over. Also, ever notice that Scorpious is like an S&M Darth Vader with Palpatine's face? Probably not intentional, but I'm sure they were inspired.

This has been going on for ages. Tolkein drew from myth and folklore, Lucas from myth, folklore and Tolkein (among others). And future franchises are building on what has gone before while ongoing franchises even borrow some from the new stuff.

Put Yoda in skintight leather and shades, add a little 'bullet time' and his fight against Count Dooku is classic Matrix-style fighting. Never mind, bad visual. ("A spoon, there is not.") Up the walls, off the walls, spinning around... I'm not sure we could have ever gotten a decent idea of how someone like Yoda might fight without stuff like the Matrix and other recent Wire-Fu films. We've even got Jedi running up and across the walls in JK: Jedi Academy (complete with a "thereisnospoon" cheat) and in the WoTC RPG with a feat that lets you do the Trinity-with-a-lightsaber thing from the Hero's Guide. Is the techno music far behind? (Just kidding on the techno - I think.)

I was afraid something like this. Oh well, to the contingincy plan.
Shields to full. Bring weapons to use Alpha Strike. Initate mods to change title, lock thread, edit posts. Call in agents K. and J. to nerolyze all beings who have read these thread. And Rogue-Ten, bring me this Daughter_of_Yubyub. I feel I must personaly deal with her acusations. And she'll not reply tto her PM for a few years.

Admittedly, I'm not that brushed up on Klingonese (Klingish? Or is it just Klingon?), nor am I even remotely a linguist, but is there any evidence to suggest it's based on any existing language in the world today? Or the Yuuzhan Vong language for that matter? Interviews with anyone? I mean, that way at least the Yuuzhan Vong language was drawn off of some 'primitive dialect' (Yeah, Threepio) that the Klingon language also originated from.

..Or, maybe we'd better hang up our lightsabers for phasers.. cry

Knight: any other references from Middle Earth so we do not have to suffer?

I don't know. One would have to go through the Lord of the Ring's index looking for these things. I'd checked out what was basically an encyclopedia of things from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit when I came across my first reference to Minas Anor. I'd read Lord of the Rings after reading through elements of that book. That's how I knew about Minas Anor being in Lord of the Rings. Since I'd read The Hobbit and never saw mention to it there, and knew that Minas Tirith was suppose to play a role in Lord of the Rings, I was able to put two and two together.

Last week's Stargate episode here, the movie-length episode with Anubis and the Eye of Ra, was a ripoff of Star Wars, all right.

O'Neal and Carter hugged a starfighter close to Anubis's flagship, then shot a torp into a reactor tunnel to blow a reactor that looked just like the Deat Star's one!

And a few seasons before that, the System Lord G'ould, Sokar, resembled the Emperor in ROTJ just right.

Copyright season is in the air, cupid's wrath beware . . .

Hey, Pelranius, maybe you should learn how to edit posts, before you start going on about a holy crusade.

To quote: "THERE IS ONLY ON FORCE!"

1 is not spelled O-N, it is spelled O-N-E.

The Cleric 007

PS: Crusades never seem to accomplish anything except getting people killed. Just look at the Vong invasion, and poor Naki :'(
