I starting the EU by going threw it all chronologically. I've reached the beginning of the Rise of the Empire Era. I'm wondering about a few things...

Will I be missing anything by skipping all the Jude Watson young Jedi books? How about the Ryder Windam Adventures books? Are they referenced much in any other EU?

When should I read The Bounty HuntersTPB? The four stories all take place in different years. Is any one more related to the other stories around it than the others. For example should I read this before Episode I as an introduction to Aurra Sing, after Empire Strikes Back with Lando on the Falcon, as the continuation of Boba Fett's storyline after Return of the Jedi, or as a prequel to Crimson Empire? Or should I just read it sometime during the New Republic era as a compromise between the later two options?

Thanks for your help. I'm having a great time figuring all this stuff out and journeying threw the EU historically.

I don't think you'll find too many overt references to the Watson saga in the adult novels or comics- tough I'm sure some elements pop in here or there.

Having only read the Legacy of the Jedi title, I must say she does very well with Qui-Gon though.

As for The Bounty Hunters, you're probably best just waiting till you get to the NR era, probably after you read CE.

Suffice it to say that I've had little luck with my library in getting these books where I'm at, and it's not the most ideal solution as I'm currently on the move. The reason I don't want the HC (even if I could get a primo deal on eBay) is that I feel like Del Rey has done a good job packaging extra stories with their PB reprints, and I can't help but feel like if I wait, I'll get more bang for my buck. Also, even if that's not the case for this particular book, I find HC somewhat unwieldy, and would really rather just wait for the PB.

You're right on the money, Cull. The Sacrifice paperback will contain A Practical Man. Which I've been meaning to purchase online for ages...

I'm wondering if I can get some advice about Empire Vol. 4 TPB. I have all other Empire TPB's and some are of course better than others. The weakest being Empire 1 & 5. As a competitionist I feel I have to get it just to get it but the Leia littered TPB just looks as interesting as I fear it is. I'd like some sort of answer before comic day and I have a feeling I'm buying it just to buy it.

based on suggestions in this very thread, I skipped 4 and 5 when I caught up with Empire, except that I bought The Bravery of Being out of Range by itself. I don't think I really missed anything...

Well, the first story, which is partially an adaptation of the Radio Drama background of ANH, is probably the best in there. It's got great Fabbri art and an awesomely retro Radio Drama plot. The other stories are fairly forgettable, though they don't descend to outright bad. Basically, you don't really have to get it. You're not missing anything. But if you feel like you are and want to stop feeling that way, getting it probably won't feel like a massive waste of cash either. So just do what feels right. tongue

I'll second what Havac said- the partial Radio Drama two-parter was pretty good (though the new side-trip story inserted into the RD content now functioning as bookends is a bit weaker than the actual RD content, but then that's because it's tough to beat Daley), the other two parter is not outright bad- I just didn;t care about what was happening. The Valentines Day one shot (actually set closer to ESB on Hoth) is ok, but nothing rave-worthy. Vol 4 is definitely not as awful as Vol 5, though, and, personally having rather enjoyed Betrayal f(lawed though it might be), I'd rank Vol 1 above 4.

Well, I purchased Empire 4 and everyone was quite right about it. It wasn't a total waste of money and not by far the best Empire TPB but it completed my Empire collection so I'm happy.

Now, Tell me about Star Wars: Darth Maul TPB. I bought Jedi VS. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force today when I'd planned to order the aforementioned Darth Maul TPB. What stopped me is I'm really bad with waiting for packages in the mail and since I heard Star Wars: Darth Maul is almost all art and little story I figured Jedi Vs. Sith would surely fit the bill in all respects.

Now, is Star Wars: Darth Maul TPB worth waiting for for an omni or...well just some opinions about the TPB would be great. I've never seen it on a shelf anywhere so ordering it blind is the only way and in Canada it's basically the same price as any 6 issue arc TPB when it's only 4 issues.

It's not a particularly deep story, but what story is there is interesting. Basically, Maul single-handedly utterly destroys Black Sun. The art is Jan, so it's excellent -- though this was before her stuff got inked and colored quite so gorgeously. The story is basically Maul goes to a Black Sun vigo, destroys him, then destroys a meeting of the entire leadership. It's a simplistic plot, but it does make up for it in showing off Maul in action. There are also some really cool moments of Maul doing more than kicking ass -- his confrontation with the Iktotchi and Mighella both show off just how awesome Sith are. Overall, I'd recommend it as a fun action read, just don't expect Ostranderian depth to the story.

Darn, Havoc! When are you going to tell me I'm totally wasting my money on the things I constantly ask about in this thread? lol. I just knew with Jan's art I'd have to to get it.
After buying Jedi Vs. Sith:TEGttF and Empire 4, and a used set of all 9 X-Wing novels in a week I'm just going to have to wait on Maul (Damn!). hypnotized *sigh* Next purchase, Star Wars: Darth Maul. I'm now going to read The Krytos trap as I go to work.:P

In another thread, ShawnRez posted:
Hi,

I was hoping I could get some help from the good people here. I've been reading various Star Wars books over the years, and my recent excitement with the "Legacy of the Force" series has fired me up to read more. I'm looking for a list or recommendations of the essential Star Wars Expanded Universe. For example, which books/stories have major events occur in them? Where were Jacen & Jaina born? When did Chewbacca die? When did Han & Leia get married? First appearances, major deaths, major events... I'm hoping to compile a list of good books to read while avoiding unnecessary things like Children of the Jedi or Darksaber, where nothing has changed from the beginning of the book.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. There's so much material to go through that its hard for a beginner. Thanks!!!

To address your specific questions:

-Jacen & Jaina were born during the "Thrawn trilogy" (Heir to the Empire, etc)
-Chewbacca died in the first book of the New Jedi Order maxi-series, Vector Prime.
-Han & Leia were married in The Courtship of Princess Leia.

Some notable appearances & events relevant to Legacy of the Force would include The Corellian Trilogy, which first introduced Centerpoint Station, as well as the X-Wing series (at least the first 4 books) and I, Jedi, for expansion on Wedge, Corran & Tycho. The prequel-era Republic Commando series has characters and backstory that are tied to the Boba Fett subplot of LOTF as well.

Star By Star & Traitor contain the more significant events in the NJO series relevant to the story arc of Jacen (but they also are set in the middle of the series). This is continued a bit in the Dark Nest Trilogy (which also provides the backstory to Alema and Jag in LOTF).

It's hard to list everything, really. Easier to reccomend what titles to avoid- Ruins of Dantooine, Truce at Bakura, Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy, Children of the Jedi, Planet of Twilight, New Rebellion, etc.

Is it explained in canon anywhere how Black Sun is able to rebuild into the force it is by SoTE?
