Just to add my two cents:
I would personally start out by reading whatever interests
you the most, as was suggested by 2ndQuest already. So if
you like the prequels a lot, read those books now, esp.
Shatterpoint and Dark Rendevous, I've heard Jude Watson's
stories are also good but they are aimed at a younger
audience. To be honest, I was staying away from Clone
Wars era novels for a while but I found out that I liked
most of them once I gave them a chance. Definitely,
please read the novelization of ROTS by Stover, I thought
it was really good, the best of the prequel novelizations
(although the TPM one isn't bad either).
If you're going to start reading post ROTJ stories, I must
echo what others have said, don't skip the Xwing novels! They
may be based off of a video game originally, but many of the
characters are quite interesting and now are quite popular,
especially Corran Horn who is the subject of I, Jedi. Zahn's
Thrawn trilogy is perhaps the best series in the EU, and
the Jedi Academy is cool too and a good place to start. I can't
comment on NJO, but Vector Prime is where you have to start
with that series (and where I ended with it... for now anyway).
If you're interested in more stories about the time immediately
before ANH, check out the Han Solo trilogy by AC Crispin. I thought
the first book started out slowly, but I've blown right through
the first two and will start the third soon. I also think its neat
how many of the characters from Dark Empire are also in this series,
or is it the other way around, I think Dark Empire predates the
Solo trilogy....
Anyway, that's just my opinion, hope it helps someone!

Yeah, DE came first- the Han Solo Trilogy had the unenviable position of having to tie together all of Han's past histories, which included the DE characters.
>>They may be based off of a video game originally<<
Actually, they're not really based off of the game- the author may have taken some inspiration from the games in terms of technical details, but the X-Wing series is set before and during the films, while the comics and novels focus on different characters and are set after the films.

I'm thinking about reading the New Jedi Order books. How important are the Young Jedi Knights and Junior Jedi Knights young readers' series' to understanding the background to the characters of the NJO? Or are any of the characters the same? Honestly, I know virtually nothing of this era, so what books would be good for providing the characters' (I'm primarily interested in the Solo kids: Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin) backstories to the NJO? I apologize if this has already been addressed.

Some of the charcter personalities do shift between the YJK and NJO- Jacen in particular, but some of the events are referenced (but then, the NJO references pretty much everything)- most notably in the Edge of Victory duology and Star By Star.
However I wouldn't say reading them is vital to understanding the NJO, but it would flesh out some supporting characters that appear in a few books.

At my local bookstore I saw two omnibooks, one of the first three YJK books, the other of 4, 5, and 6. Should I get these so even though the characters go through some personality changes in NJO I'll be familiar with the characters from YJK? I know a similar question was answered but I'm asking specifically about the omni books, as I may not read any YJK books if you don't think the omnibuses are worth it.

As far as I'm aware, the omnibuses are just all of the YJK books compiled into two books. So it's just like reading the individual books themselves.

Those two books only collect the first YJK story arc (focusing on the Shadow Academy), there was a second story arc formed by the rest of the books which focused on Black Sun and the Diversity Alliance.
Anyways, while not 100% essential to understanding the NJO, even that first story arc will flesh out a few of the younger Jedi characters and one or two other characters that pop up eventually in the NJO. Also, I recall them being enjoyable reads (though I'll admit it's been a long time sicne I last read them).
As far as JJK goes, they're even less essential to read, except that they are the only source to introduce the characters of Ikrit and Tahiri prior to the NJO.

Yeah, that's what I'm asking. Should I just read those(because of them being omnibuses) and just forget about the rest of the series?

IIRC events correctly- YJK was originally only going to be those 6 or so books now found in those omnibuses, the other books were added on as a second series/story arc, so the collected books do stand alone well enough.
And, honestly, I've only read 1 or 2 books past the first 6 and didn't have much trouble following any references in the NJO. (Ikrit and Tahiri confused me more ).

Is Jedi Trial even worth reading? I borrowed it from a friend but don't know whether I should waste my time. I remember when it came out it got really bashed on these boards and I usually trust the reviews on these boards. I've read every Star Wars novel except Planet of Twilight, Crystal Star, the Bounty Hunter trilogy, and the Lando books, because everyone said they were total garbage. Is Jedi Trial in the same boat with these? I tried to look for the JC Lit review topic for it but couldn't find it. If anyone has a link to it will they post it? Thanks.

Best EU comic
|
Sorry bout double post...
but by far the best EU comic is an old Star Wars tales comic. It is number 51, but it is in the Star Wars tales Volumn 1. The name is Skippy the Jedi Droid...It is about a Force Sensitive Droid. It is the red R2 unit that blows up infront of Luke, when the Jawas are selling R2D2 and 3PO. The blew himself up because I saw the future that if R2D2 wasnt taken then the Emipire whould win..Everyone Needs To Read It. Remember Skippy the Jedi Droid..Star Wars Tales Volumn One.
P.S. Are Jedi Droids possible..???also there is some humor in this story
