RE: Journey Through the EU: A Retrospective Project
Wow, interesting discussion on the KOTOR 2 . . . I knew nothing about that game until I read the posts here . . . sounds, er, fascinating.
And I'm just going by the TF.N timeline, canon or not. So a lot of the Tales stories are there, even the humor ones.
Here's another one and I'm sure you'll all laugh at me for being woefully misinformed about the continuity, but whatever.
700 Years Before ANH:
Heart of Darkness – Paul Lee
*Published in Star Wars Tales, Vol. 4
*Okay, again, using that real world timeline I've talked about, this one would take place around 1275 AD.
*I’ll admit I’m not actually sure if the Yoda-esque alien in this story is supposed to be Yoda or not. The other characters call him “Minch,” which leads me to think not, but if not, I’m not sure why it’s set at a time period when Yoda would have been, as this character is, just becoming a full fledged knight.
*The art here is pretty good. It resembles an oil painting really and its especially stunning in the way it portrays lightsabers and their movements.
*So this is the story of how the tree on Dagobah came to be infused with the Dark Side. Frankly, we don’t need that. It takes away from the power of the original story to get at this, but whatever.
*This story has been sort of told in a Zahn book and I think that book tells that it was Yoda who killed the Bpfasshi Sith at the tree, but I don’t recall for sure and I don’t care enough to look.
*Minch’s hallucinogenic duel with the Sith is well done as is the Sith’s death.
*In the end, however, this story takes a mythic element from the films and gives it a very mundane and everyday origin. That’s a mistake and so the story is less than pointless. It’s irritatingly pointless and philosophically a misfire. Skip this one.

Dark Lords of the Sith TPB called Shoaneb Culu an eyeless Miraluka.
Recent articles have now called Gordon Jerec a Miraluka too---though he has eye sockets.
We don't actually know if Visas has eyeless sockets too or not, or even eyes at all.

RE: Journey Through the EU: A Retrospective Project
Well since you're interested, I did two reviews for another thread. Here they are...
Knights of the Old Republic
Kyle: ALRIGHT!
Chris: Damnit, I wanted a post NJO video game starring Ben Skywalker!
Me: That's still a possibility Chris.
Kyle: It's hurt by the fact that not many people would understand why Chewie was dead, who were the scarred dudes, and what's a Mara Jade.
Me: She's Luke's wife.
Kyle: Righhtttt...sure she is.
Storyline wise, the story takes place 4000 years before ANH. Basically, after the events of Tales of the Jedi, the Mandalorian armies invade the Galactic Republic after the Republic more or less let them have free reign outside their borders for many years (typical of 1st world nations to less developed ones). Unlike previous occasions though, the Jedi Knights didn't intervene to stop the Republic being attacked. Without the Jedi, the Republic suffered devastating losses.
Chris: I swear, to set down your weapons is to invite attack. The Vong will be back. So will the Empire. You should wipe them out, ALL OF THEM.
Me: They did that to the original Sith Chris. It didn't help.
Chris: You don't see a RACE of Sith around do you?
Me: Just wait til Knights of the Old Republic 2...
Chris: No spoilers!
The Mandalorians code of honor is very flexible, it should be noted. They view the Republic building military bases in cities along with treating soldiers with civilian medics to be extremely dishonorable and thus more or less caused massive collateral damage.
Chris: Finally! Someone who knows how its done.
Kyle: Target the women and children FIRST. Deny your enemy the chance to reknew his seed!
Chris: Sew the ground with Salt!
Me: If I believed in reincarnation, I'd imagine you two would have done well amongst the Huns.
Kyle: Anakin knew what had to be done to stop the Jedi. I get teary eyed remembering the younglings massacre.
The reason for the neutrality of the Jedi was the fact that the Jedi had seen a prophecy that a terrible and awesome darkness was to emerge in the galaxy. In order to be at full strength, the Jedi had to stay out of the war.
Chris: Ahhh prophecy, I bet you five bucks the Jedi accidentally result in the cicrumstances that are required to fulfill it.
Kyle: I don't take sucker bets.
This resulted in many younger Jedi choosing to ignore the dictates of the Jedi Council and instead joining in the fight against the Mandalorians. The most powerful of these Jedi were Revan and Malak.
Kyle: Gee, those aren't remotely Sithy names.
Chris: Wonder where this could be going.
Me: For me, the best part is underneath the really scary battle armor. The concept design I chose for Darth Revan was this really really really petite and cute young woman. It's like....you're 5'2 and have a pony tail. This is not the face that terrifies the masses.
Revan was a master strategist on par with any that the Jedi had ever produced and soon they waged a brutal war against the Mandalorians. The Jedi were forced to commit many brutal acts to defeat them and eventually it began to take its toll on their souls. Seeking greater knowledge and power...
Me: Being, you know, a 5'2 girl with a pony tail...
Chris: Size matters not. You're obsessed with your version of Revan aren't you?
Me: To me it does. Isn't everyone? That's my girlfriend's height.
Chris: I could imagine your girlfriend as a Sith lord. Especially the way you tease her about her size.
And found their way to the Sith where they gathered the knowledge there and turned it against the Mandalorians. The final step had been taken and they took the titles of Darth...
Chris: Which didn't supposedly exist then.
Kyle: But it sounds cooler
and declared that instead of protecting the Republic, they would overthrow it. A third of the Republic fleet joined Darth Revan then as she turned to conquering the Republic. The mandalorians beaten and scattered. The Jedi now knew the face of their darkness and it was one of their own....
Me: Who couldn't reach the high shelves at my house....
Chris: Your girlfriend would so Sith choke you if she had the chance.
Darth Revan was triumphant, using an army of special Jedi assassins and her reborn army of the Sith formed from his former Jedi colleagues to establish dominion over much of the galaxy when she was betrayed...
Me: Gee, a Sith being betrayed by her pupil.
Chris: THAT'S never happened before.
Darth Revan was not slain though but instead captured by the Jedi Knight Bastilla Swann. Darth Revan had his armies turned by her Jedi battle meditation and he was lead in chains to the Jedi Council.
Me:Star Wars names are getting our of hand.
Chris: A French prison and a bird. Good call.
Kyle: I wonder how many people call Boba Fett, Bob.
There is one universal truth amongst the Jedi, something that under no circumstances is ever broken. The Jedi do not execute defeated foes.
Kyle: Maccceeeeee?
Their punishment was perhaps even more harsh though for they stripped not only Darth Revan of her ability in the Force but also stripped him of all of her memories. The amnesiac Sith Lord was berift of all of her power but because he no longer was able to recall her Dark Side crimes, they instead merely let him go to wander the universe.
Chris: I wonder when the Jedi started to confuse 'mercy' with stupidity.
Almost immediately after, the Jedi fell into infighting.
All: Of course.
The conservatives who wished to ban the Jedi Knighthood from marriage and raise from birth to prevent things like Darth Revan from ever occurring again gained considerable strength during this time. Darth Malak had none of Darth Revan's restraint and he began a ruthless devastation of the galaxy that the Jedi were powerless to stop. Salvation would come in the form of a most unlikely hero.
Me: A five foot two girl?
Chris: Dude, what is your height obsession?
Revan would find her way back into the war as he would eventually rescue Bastilla Swan who convinced the Jedi that she should be trained anew as he gathered an increasingly large number of followers while being mysteriously drawn to Korriban and Darth Malak. Her progress was unearthly fast...
Chris: Gee I wonder why.
And soon was one of the most powerful of Jedi...and regained her memory. Rather than turn on the Jedi who did this to him....
Chris: I would have.
Kyle: Me too.
Me: Barring that I'm an evil crimminal...I would have too.
Revan hunted down and destroyed Darth Malak along with his new apprentice. Malak, his superweapon in the ancient Construction device of the Rakata, and the Sith Academy that produced countless more dark siders.
Having found love with one of her companions...
Me: Depending on player choice...
Revan retired with him and Bastilla, whom she freed from the Dark side, into the unknown regions.
Chris: Roll credits.
Kyle: Finally some epic action!

RE: Journey Through the EU: A Retrospective Project
Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords
Chris: Ah yes, the craptacular waste of my money.
Me: I don't know if you can say that on this board.
Chris: Oh, the shizzity waste of my money.
Me: You're only getting worse.
Chris: The game sucked! it's not my fault.
Me: we're talking about the story not the game.
After Darth Revan's defeat of Darth Malak, the remaining Sith Lords turned upon each other with ruthless abandon. The Republic relaxed their guard and believed the ending for the Sith was at hand.
Chris: STUPID.
Unfortunately, the darkness was just beginning.
Kyle: Of course, good never triumphs in Star Wars. It's only delayed.
They did not real that the Sith had reformed on the world of Malachor V. There, lead by a mysterious Dark Lord of the Sith named Darth Traya, an unprecedented SITH TRIUVIANTE emerged that struck out against the Jedi when they least expected it. They wielded powers unimaginable with the masked Dark Lord Darth Nihilus...
Kyle: Ahhhh, yes, Darth Ni.
Chris: Ni Ni Ni!
Me: Some people may not get Monty Python and the holy Grail references guys
Chris: That's their loss.
...who could destroy entire worlds with the Force and feed upon the death.
Kyle: In other words he can use a Force Storm and Feed on lifeforce like Palpatine.
Me: Errr yeah.
Kyle: Not knocking the power or anything. We've just seen it before.
Chris: And a Sith Triuviante? So there's THREE Sith instead of two, big deal.
Kyle: What's with the whole Traya thing anyway?
Me: It's a reference to Betrayal.
Kyle: Ah....wonder where Traya will show up? Possibly, THE HEROES' GROUP?
There was also Darth Sion whom was the twisted wreckage of a Jedi warrior whom had survived unbearable agony but by his desire to live had transcended death and could not be destroyed by mortal means.
Chris: Great set up for the villains, a freaking guy in a mask and a Sith Zombie.
Me: We've had worse.
Chris: Name one.
Me: Waru.
Chris: Name two.
Me: A Sith Lord named Dolph.
Chris: Name three
Me: A Hutt Jedi.
Chris; I give up.
Nihilus destroyed world after world with his powers as Darth Sion commanded an elite squad of Assassins. Unable to stand against a power that destroyed entire planets to get at a few Jedi, the order formally disbanded and went into hiding. By the time of five years past Darth Revan's conquest of the galaxy; the Sith held lordship and dominion over the entire galaxy, the Jedi were defeated, and the Republic was crippled beyond all repair.
Kyle: Well....Palpatine's achievement certainly looks less important regarding this.
Chris: Doubly so because he had to use treachery. Who knew Sith Zombie and Mask Dude could just do it through brute force.
Me: No pun intended.
Chris: I didn't say it wasn't intended.
It is during this time that a faint hope arrived that could possibly deliver the galaxy from darkness.
Chris: LUKE SKYWALKER!
Kyle: The Chosen One!
Me: No.
Chris: Well the obvious choice would be Darth Revan from the last game then.
Me: Nope, its someone we've never heard of.
Chris and Kyle: Balls.
Darth Revan's greatest general had stood beside her and Darth Malak during most of the Mandalorian wars but was severed from the Force through the use of a Force based weapon that destroyed the majority of the Mandalorian fleets. Returning to the Jedi even as his allies turned to the Sith, the young woman was condemned for her allegiance to Revan and then summarily cast out of the Jedi Knighthood. She was even stripped of her name and given instead the lowly title of the Exile. Invisible to the Force, she escaped the attention of Sion's Dark Jedi Assassins and Jedi killers.
Chris: If they can't use the Force, she's not much of a Jedi is she?
Kyle: Kind of sad, the Last of the Jedi is Callista here.
Chris: Luke's achievements once more take a nosedive.
Kyle: The Jedi are apparenlty about as resiliant as the Sith if they take a beating like this routinely.
Finally tracked by Sion's assassins, she is shocked to discover she is not the Last of the Jedi for she has been contacted by the mysterious Jedi Master Kreia. A withered old crone who nevertheless possessed mysterious power over the Force. Having also been stripped of her powers, she offered to serve as the Exile's spiritual guide for rediscovering the Power of the Force...to good or evil.
Kyle: Gee, THAT sounds like something a Jedi master would say.
Chris: She's old. In Star Wars Old=Evil.
Me: Obi Wan and Yoda dude.
Chris: Amongst the women.
The Exile wandered the galaxy, gathering companions who were shockingly rarely what they seemed. The failed Jedi student known as the Disciple, the beautiful Echanni martial artist the Handmaiden...
Chris: Not too big on NAMES in this game are they?
The smuggler Atton Rand and the Iridonian technician. Even Mandalore himself would join the quest to try and liberate the galaxy from the Sith.
Kyle: Now what were the secrets again?
Me: Atton Rand is actually a Sith assassin that's fallen in love with the Exile despite having been dispatched to kill her, the Handmaiden who leaves her Jedi Slavelord...err Master after a life of backbreaking service discovers she's not her heriditary servant at all but her daughter, the Disciple and Bao Dur are pretty much who they appear to be....
Kyle: And Kreia?
Me: Oh Kreia is Darth Traya and is leading you to destroy the Sith for betraying her rulership.
Kyle: I wish my Jedi mentor was that cool.
Chris: Didn't Darth Ni also have a secret?
Me: Yeah, Darth Nihilus was actually the living incarnation of the Exile's Dark Side that was brought to life by the Force weapon severing him from the Force.
Kyle: And weirdly, the idea of a force doppleganger ALSO has appeared in Star Wars EU before. The first time ones ever gone to try to KILL his original self though.
Chris: Man this game is messed up...
With the majority of the Sith destroyed and their flagship destroyed by the Exile, the Exile attempts to try and recovene the few surviving Jedi Masters. The Jedi, in a wonderful display of gratitude, are horrified at the Exile's regaining of the Force along with training of other Jedi. They decide to once again take back the power of the Force from them even as Darth Traya 'rescues' the player and frames their leader Atris (mother of the Handmaiden) for being the "real" Darth Traya.
Chris: Well that's actually a fairly reasonable crimminal plan. Sith are mostly destroyed but you can go back into the shadows...
Me: Yes but its kriffed up that while she drove Atris crazy, having your illegitimate daughter leave you over your horrific treatment of her plus a Sith Lord having been giving you evil knowledge for years...not to mention having your order almost wiped out....you still spare her life.
Chris: I hate when Jedi spare people.
And the Exile learned that Atris was not a Sith at all but merely a broken and sad woman. Tracking down Traya, the Exile confronts the mad Sith Lord who reveals her master plan. To use the power of the Exile's Force weapon to sever countless individuals from the 'tyranny' of the Force. Fearing the destiny that it imposes, she believed that by severing all life from the Force she could destroy it and effectively kill the God that had lead to so many conflicts between the Sith.
Chris: In other words, she was totally nuts.
Kyle: And they kill her...
After she has most of your friends kill each other by using their worst fears against them.
Chris: God what a depressing ending.
Destroying Darth Traya, the Exile knows that he must seek out Darth Revan who has discovered a greater threat than these pathetic Sith Lords in the Unknown Regions. Leaving on of the love triangle who loved her behind (the other having died) to refound the Jedi Order, she departs....likely to never return.
Kyle: Or until the next sequel.

True, on the other hand. It's as good an explanation as any for him.
Except I believe in the game it's stated that he was just someone else who fought at Malachor. He is compared with the Exile, but only in the sense that they're both tears in the Force and absorb power from others.

245 Years Before ANH:
Yaddle’s Tale: The One Below – Dean R. Motter
*Using our real world timeline, this one takes place around 1730. We're moving on up.
*It’s the flashback section of this story that takes place at this point. Or rather, the flashback starts here and moves forward over at least two hundred years.
*Anyway, this details Yaddle’s assignment with her master. Her master is killed and Yaddle is imprisoned in a tomb for a couple of centuries which she uses to master the Force.
*I do like the look of the villain in this story. His eyes are particularly eerie.
*I also like, in principle, the central conceit of this story: namely, that after the guy who sealed Yaddle up leaves the planet, that the planet’s inhabitants continue feeding her and even build up a sort of religion around the mysterious “One Below,” that they give offerings of food too.
*In all serious analysis, though, this one’s just negligible. Not very interesting at all.
* out of **** stars.

RE: Journey Through the EU: A Retrospective Project
I started a complete read through of the EU in 1999 a couple of months before Episode I came out. Right now I am at Shadows of the Empire. I've been stuck there for a while frankly - because there has been so many new prequel era material that I've been reading that the last few months.
Right now, I am reading Art of/Making of ROTS (they are fabulous read together BTW - great companion pieces). Then I'll read Visionaries graphic novel, Last of the Jedi #1, a few of the republic era comics I need to catch up on (Republic, Grievous)... then back to post-SOTE material.
It's fun - you'll love reading the EU chronologically. I am buying the stuff though - so not library. Tho' you can find a lot of it cheap and/or used online.

Spoiler free 'til Episode VII

RE: Journey Through the EU: A Retrospective Project
155 Years Before ANH:
Chewbacca – Chapter 1 – Mallatobuck (Flashback portion) – Darko Macan
*Okay, the driving force behind this graphic novel is that, after Chewbacca’s death (surely that’s not still a spoiler!), Threepio and Artoo interview those who knew him, with each participant telling a short story about Chewie. This is a great premise and gets great execution with this graphic novel, as a whole, being one of the strongest, though not on the level of Jedi Vs. Sith or Redemption.
*That said, it derives its power from the emotional tellings of the stories. This graphic novel should be read when the frame stories take place, immediately after Vector Prime. Slicing it up and reading the flashbacks at separate times in the time line just removes the emotional impact of the book.
*Regardless of that, this is a cute story detailing the first big encounter between Chewbacca and the Wookie that would become his wife. Basic boy meets girl, girl likes boy but mistakenly arouses interest of boy’s best friend, girl gets snatched by slave traders, boy kicks ass . . . er, never mind, not that typical after all . . .
*And a great punchline. Just a great final panel.

Chewbacca – Chapter 2 – Attichitcuk (Flashback portion) – Darko Macan
*Interesting to see an albino Wookie.
*This story seems interested in showing that Chewie could not only fight, but also use his head. It’s an interesting story, showing us the often hidden cunning side of Chewie’s character.
*And again, it’s all for that punchline, which is fabulous.

89 Years Before ANH:
Legacy of the Jedi (Yoda/Dooku Section) – Jude Watson
*Using our real world timeline, this one takes place around 1886.
*Despite the impression given by the cover and even some synopses of this book, Yoda is not Dooku’s teacher.
*Anyway, this finds Dooku a padawan learner who gets mixed up with a more reckless friend of his, Lorian Nod, who wants to view the secret Sith Holocron.
*And there is one genuinely creepy scene with Dooku finding his friend alone in a darkened room, huddled in a corner, having viewed the holocron and been royally mind screwed.
*And the training exercise is actually interesting in both concept and execution.
*And Yoda leaves Dooku with a few words of wisdom, which do seem to ring true for the character of Dooku.
*This book won’t really get interesting until later, in idea or in execution. The later sections . . . well, we’ll have more to talk about when we get to them and more to say about the book as a whole when we get there.
*Anyway, judging this section alone, which is really unfair, I have to give it ** out of **** stars. Utterly average in every way.

It's a scene that gives us some insight. Don't think that Dooku's teacher might not have died. Also, take note that the Jedi Knighthood also turns out little kids who are only barely entering adolescence. It's noteworthy also that while Dooku had a bit of a "Percy Weasaly" vibe going around him, there's nothing to suggest that he wasn't going to grow up to be a fine and upstanding young Jedi Knight.

Who says Dooku's teacher has to die? Yoda trained him as a youngling, same as he did Obi-wan.
