Legacy of the Jedi (Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan Section) – Jude Watson

*This section opens with a line that supports what I’ve been saying about this book: “Qui-Gon was the Master now and he had never forgotten that lesson,” referring to the final lesson Dooku left him.

*This is the emotional center of this book and the book is at its best when it focuses on it: Dooku’s teaching and his relationship with Qui-Gon made Qui-Gon into the kind of man and teacher he was. Some he accepted and some he rejected, but everything Qui-Gon became was because of Dooku. And the same applies to Obi-Wan and his relationship with Qui-Gon and, though this book doesn’t go into it, the same to Anakin and his relationship with Obi-Wan. Wow.

*This section is not quite as interesting as some. Qui-Gon’s relationship with Nod (and it is that overarching theme that drives the book) is only second hand since we never really see him interact with Nod in the previous section.

*A great bit where Qui-Gon articulates his view on the council. “They do not need to know our every move, nor do they want too.” Upon being told that Master Windu might get touchy about what they plan to do, Qui-Gon responds with, “Precisely why I’m not going to contact them. They’ll hear about it after the mission is done.”

*This is, on the whole, a fairly typical Jedi Apprentice story. The fact that Nod and Qui-Gon have a history has virtually no impact, either plotwise or emotionally.

*And this ends with a flash forward to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan on the way to Naboo to begin the events of the Phantom Menace. It’s truly stunning and I literally got cold chills when Qui-Gon revealed Obi-Wan’s greatest flaw: “You desire to please me too much.” God, this book just gets to the heart of the relationships and the entire saga in a fantastic way. Why can’t Watson do this more often?

*All in all, this section only achieves greatness on it’s final page. That greatness that it achieves is absolutely amazing, but the last page is too late. ** out of **** stars.

I think I said it earlier when you got to the Dooku/Qui-Gon part but this book's portrayal of Qui-Gon really reminded me what a great character he really was.

BTW, by your calculations- where are we in your timeline analogy? (part 3, not counting it's epilogue is set 12 years before TPM, in case whatever your referencing doesn't specify)

Looks like around 1933 to me.

Using 2005 as the end of the NJO, I subtract 25 years to get us back to ANH and then 43 years to get us back to this section of the Legacy of the Force.

That would put us at 1937, not 1933

43 Years before ANH:

The Secret of Tet Ami – Fabian Nicieza

*This story can be found in the Star Wars Tales, Vol. 4 compilation.

*Oh, geez, it’s another dumbass Mace Windu story. I’m so sick of this guy.

*And this truly defies description. It seems that Mace Windu has to go to a temple that was built to commemorate an act that he committed some four thousand or so years previously. See, he has to go to the temple and use it to travel back in time so that he can commit the act that results in the temple being built. He also has to replace the orb given to him by Yoda which was itself taken from the temple by the people who are breaking into it. This necessitates that he must put it back before they break in and find it. In other words, I’m going to puke my guts out.

*In short, this story introduces the concept of time travel to the Star Wars universe and with the resounding sound of crap being flung against a wall at five hundred miles an hour. This is, without a doubt, the worst thing I have yet encountered on this excursion. 0 out of **** stars. Let’s just pretend this abomination doesn’t exist, okay?

Well, technically there is one or two examples of time travel elsewhere in SW (IIRC, Threepio goes back in time on Endor and that is why the Ewoks worship him during ROTJ).

No, it's from the old Ewoks and Droids comic series (a crossover between the two titles, in fact, if memory serves me).

Which is probbaly the main thing saving it from a plausibility perspective, since Endor has magical aspects established as well as all those grvitic and hyperspace anomolies.

Yep, that would be:

Star Wars: Droids # 4 (Droids and Ewoks in Lost in Time!), October 1986
Ewoks # 10 (Ewoks and Droids in The Demons of Endor), November 1986

Yeah, it's infinities. Thankfully.

And the Droid/Ewok one I am aware of and also another comic where a drunk in a bar tells a story about time travel, as I vaguely seem to recall, and there is some hint that the Wolfman's tale in the Mos Eisley book is a time travel story as well.

But this is the first one I've come too on my excursion.

The Fight for Truth – Jude Watson

*The ninth book in the series. And more to come, the inside cover promises. How long, oh, Lord . . .

*This book introduces Adi Gallia and reintroduces Siri, the annoyingly violent and mean little girl who is supposed to steal our hearts but only ticks us off.

*This story finds Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, accompanied by Siri and Adi, going to a planet to investigate a potential Jedi candidate. I think the best fanfiction I ever read that wasn’t written by me or Lord Bane had this as a starting point. It was a heck of a lot better than this book, let me tell you. It involved Jedi factions and a child who had already been taken by someone “claiming” to be the Jedi and then . . . well, screw it, never mind.

*Here’s an indication of how good this book is: “The younger couple stepped forward. ‘I am V-Nen and this is my wife O-Melie . . . we are the parents of O-Lana.’” Criminy. And you thought Star Wars already had the stupidest names in the world.

*I can summarize this book entirely in two words: cheap Orwell. I think you now know all there is to know about this book.

*Anyway, the gist here is that Qui-Gon, a consummate rule breaker is forced to cooperate with Adi Gallia, a consummate rule keeper. And Obi-Wan and Siri, who dislike each other intensely are forced to depend on each other.

*Hmm, a nice moment when one of the characters said that every citizen has a vote, but the leaders decide what they can and cannot vote on. That’s actually pretty profound.

*Hahahahaha! V-Obi! Just when you thought his name couldn’t get any worse!

*There’s a truly stunning moment at the end when Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are reunited and Qui-Gon has a brief vision of an old, old man, alone and bitter, hunched over in waves of heat in a desert somewhere. It just feels so incredible and it literally gave me cold chills.

*That’s what is frustrating about this series. There are moments of pure beauty and power, separated by pages and pages of pure boredom and banality. Again, I wish someone better had written this series. There’s real potential here, but Watson rarely even begins to realize it.

*All in all, a boring book, not helped by irritating little girls with temper tantrums and idiotic names. A brief flash of genius isn’t enough. * out of **** stars.
