I like the idea Palps may have renounced the Sith AFTER they helped him to his clone body. I don't see transferring spirits to clones as being the same as what Obi-Wan, Yoda and Qui-Gon did. Remember, other SITH including Naga Sadow, Exar Kun and Freedon Nadd all wanted to transfer their spirits to living bodies. It can't be said they all wanted to abandon the Sith ways.

Palpatine seemed to have no problem breaking the rule of two in the DE saga, so I do see potential for the idea that he renounced the Sith.

I'm one of the few who believe that Palps was lying to Luke about having died before Endor. I feel that Palps needed the Ancient Sith to teach him how to transfer his body. Once he knew how, perhaps he became arrogant like you said and decided he didn't need to follow anyobody's rules anymore.

Hasn't his pre-Endor soul transfer already been confirmed? After he was attacked by the Korriban Dark Lords, he had to take over a clone body, which Vader sees him preparing to do in Darth Vader's Return. Old Gamer article, no?

Perhaps he went back in his young bodybuilder clone body to fight his original body which was inhabited by crazed Sith ghost and get it back! He hadn't being rotting it for so long to just abandon it to some dead guy who wanted to use it as a zombie! That'd make a nice Tales story if Tales hadn't been cancelled ( frustrated )! wink

this is probably my favorite (non-Waru tongue ) ret-con so far. It all makes sense, and seems like something Palpy would do. Especially the cocky DE Palpy. Anyways, yeah, AWESOME!

Hiya there, first time poster to the ret-conning, longtime FF'er.
Anyway, here's my take on the whole DE-Ep3 Palpatine sitch:
The throne was intended for Vader to take his place with Maul and Tyrannus as Sith apprentices that served their purpose, then were disposed of by better, more powerful replacements. In Vader's case, that was supposed to be Luke in accordance to the "rule of two." When that plan went pear-shaped, and the Sith spirits aided Palpatine, they were probably demanding to know "soooo when's that apprentice of yours gonna join us?"
Perhaps in part that's how he was able to body hop, because of some arrangement with the past Dark Lords (and Plagueis' research into midichlorians and life extension) that so long as he abide by the "rule of two" he can continue to inhabit the physical realm rather than "make way" for his apprentice to become the Master. Remember, that's part of the Sith tradition, that when the apprentice becomes stronger than the master, the apprentice slays the master and becomes the master. By becoming virtually immortal, Palpy was pretty much guaranteeing that none of his apprentices would ever be able to replace him as master, thereby screwing up a fundamental part of the tradition. It's possible the Sith spirits became angry over Palpatine's failure to keep Vader a Sith, or that they got royally ticked that despite all the power and skills invested in him to become virtually immortal and thus flout the rules that he STILL was weak enough to get nearly killed and require their help, thus showing his unworthiness to be a true Sith Master. One way or the other, or perhaps both, they could have chosen as punishment to revoke his title of Darth Sidious, effectively KICKING HIM OUT of the Sith order. It would explain why he didn't confer a Darth title on Luke in DE, or refer to himself as Sidious, and why the Sith spirits on Korriban treated him so poorly. By calling him Palpatine, the latest of who-knows-how-many aliases, and not even by his Darth title or his real name (whatever that was) they were showing disrespect, effectively saying everything he had accomplished, everything he used to be no longer mattered or even existed, and that he was a nobody.

Either he got kicked out or he just left, the ret-con works as long as the Chosen One destroyed the Sith. Whatever happened, it happened because of Vader, because the Prophecy was fulfilled.

Actually it was said that they just brought him a clone. It was never stated that Palpatine either died or transferred his spirit in the Missions Tale. They may have brought him a clone just in case he died. He had been experiementing but I don't believe he was certain how to transfer himself into a clone body safely. After all, C'Boath went insane.

But then C'baoth was just your standard wacko Spaarti clone, not the victim of a soul-transfer screwup.

This should be pointless to everyone. obviously when DE was written the writer didn't know what a sith was, which makes it flawed like a lot of pre-99 SW eu.

Yes, but he was one of the only known Force-Using clones created. There might have been concerns that if you clone a force user, they will go mad.

Which is what eventually happened to Palpatine.
