It's obvious the name Grievous came from the fact that he causes grief, pain, and anguish. tongue

Precisely. Because he was so grievously injured.

I never really minded his name actually being Grevious. It's not to different from Skywalker or Solo. Although even Lucas originally planned for Shmi's name to be Shmi Warka and Anakin's was only Skywalker because it was his racing name. And Han was born Han Suul according to COPL.

Anyway, great to hear from you on here, Abel. I was disappointed to learn that the Huks that Grevious fought were insectoid. I thought that it was a reference to those aliens from Marvel that were cute little feline-like people as children but then morph into giant brutes at the (immediate) onset of puberty. I would've loved someone to write them into the PT-era! I still love "Small Wars" where they (the Lahsbees?) fight the Ewoks over the affections of an Ewok Princess.

Maybe the Huks are thinking ... Gremlins. They start out cute and furry and, well you know the rest.

I thought it would come to this. I could never imagine Grievy saying, "I'm an evil villain who spreads grief, pain, and anguish to one and all... henceforth I shall call myself General Grievous." LOE seemed to hint that the name had something to do with his past.... I'm interested to see who came up with it first.

A little off topic but this question is for Coffee. Since Nute Gunray is your hero, can you explain how they might have come up with his name and if the 'gunray' part really means anything. I assume a raygun but we never see him shoot a weapon.

IIRC correctly, is a combination of "Nute" (as in Newt Gingrich) and "Gunray" (as in Ronald Reagan (Ray-gun -> Gun-ray).

Similar deal with Lott Dodd.

Yeah well, Nute didn't act like Newt or Reagan. Unless, of course, he was an actor in his younger days...

For what its worth, an idea being perpetuated out there is that the allusion being made is that Gunray and the rest of the Trade Federation operated like politically corrupt, greedy, capitalists (e.g.: Regan and Gingrich, also Lott Dod --> Trent Lott).

Maybe... now would that be physically or emotionally?

You're right, however I tried to play up any parallels between Grievous and Vader since George intended the character as a thematic prototype to Vader, so I thought it made sense to make Grievous an adopted name.

happy I immediately thought of the Huhks too. Then the Houks. Suffice to say, that while neither of these alien species are the Huk, their existence did influence the portrayal of their homonymic brethren for the article.

Take care,
Abel

That basically describes the Huhk from the Marvel comics. I think they actually beat the Gremlins movies to the punch.

In the words of Yoda, "You will know..." wink

Grievous is a bad, bad man. And like most, he's haunted. He's built up layers and layers between himself and his humanity, or Kaleeshity as it were, to the point that he becomes an automaton, his egoism and self-centeredness empowering the Sith to manipulate him like a puppet.

Take care,
Abel
