Charlemagne19 posted: At heart, I always think that Star Wars is more about a human drama so that "alien" is actually a matter of diversity. The human race is itself incredibly diverse and there's plenty enough to handle all the oddities and diversities of our universe without making weird qualities for aliens that might not make any sense.
That does seem to be the case. I like the hard sci-fi angle, but that's not what spoke to me about Grievous. It was the pathos.
Charlemagne19 posted: The "humanity" of Grevious I actually felt was a far better choice than trying to make the Khaleesh have anything randomly 'odd' off of them. The very fact that the Khaleesh are so normal and yet are ignored by the Republic (even when the Huk are EATING their children) only adds to the tragedy and senselessness of humanocentrism.
That's a great point, Charlemagne.
And I suppose this is as good a time as any to mention that everytime I write your name, I find myself resisting the urge to break out my Sinatra cd: "Charlemagne... DARLIN, Charlemagne..."
The2ndQuest posted: It's tricky to add alien characteristics in a workable sense- sometimes, like with Cetsus Deception's sex-rotating giant spiders, it can backfire and come across as excessively silly- alienness fo the sake of being alien.
Had I gone the sociopath route with Grievous, I might've played up any biological quirks due to his species. I think that would've worked well. But Warren Fu really set the tone firmly. Getting bogged down in quirks and details of physiology would've only worked against the ability to empathize with Grievous.
Super_Battle_Droid posted: Halagad I know one Jedi you forgot about that was killed in Labyrinth of Evil, the one that was killed in the Jedi Starfighter that was destroyed by the disabling burst from the Invisible Hand that was ordered by Grievous.
If you didn't forget about him/her, you should've named him/her.
I didn't forget, but I made a judgment call, and I felt Grievous wasn't really directly responsible for this one. The waters are muddied a bit by the fact that attributed responsibility to Grievous for the Invisible Hand's destruction of the Jedi escorts above Belderone, but there are two points in favor of this: 1) We never see how it goes down from Grievous' point of view in Labyrinth of Evil, so I interpret the attribution of direct responsibility to Grievous as exactly that: he "pushed the button"; and 2) I mostly just wanted to include Flint's dad in the line-up.
WhillJedi posted: Still Super, adding something like that to the endnotes wouldn't make it canonical, I don't think.
It wouldn't. The endnotes can however clarify lines of logic and intention and draw together correlations that otherwise might not be known or obvious.

Rogue_Follower posted: Finally found the Huk quote in The Swarm War:
"That's odd, Captain Solo," C-3PO said. "I don't see any bugs at all. The Verpine are a species of mantid, the Fefze are more closely related to beetles, and the Huk are much closer to vespids than---" -The Swarm War, p. 96
Now, vespids are kinds of wasps, so this doesn't jive with the Huk's new identity as an alias of the Yam'rii, who are mantids. So. We need a retcon.
The fact that the name "Huk" is a slang term for the Yam'rii could be used as an advantage, especially since it means "soulless bug.". Perhaps the term was taken up by those in contact with the Kaleesh as a term for any insectoid species, and it stuck to one. This could explain why Threepio uses the term, and could explain why he says their vespids: they aren't the true Huk, but another species altogether. Of course, this poses problems of its own; notably, why any species would be given/take on such a derogatory name.
An interesting idea, Rogue, but I'm inclined to go with something more simple. In the first part of the Grievous endnotes, I suggest that Threepio intends the "vespid" as something other than a biological description. In any case, "closer to vespids" is a relative categorization.
Rogue_Follower posted: Hey Abel, maybe you could connect these mysterious waspish Huks to the Nevoota (which we know are bee-like ) and the Brizzit, which also appear to be some sort of wasp or fly. After all, the Brizzit are nearly extinct, and the Nevoota were (supposedly) wiped out by the Mandalorians... maybe they're trying to hide their identity...

Maybe the Dark Nest Trilogy is just the revised title of the
Nevoota Bee Trilogy?
Even funnier.
Matthew Trias posted: I believe Wallace mentions in the NEC that Tann did hold more authority than Grevious in the early days of the war.
That's correct

Thank you Ms. Coffee.
Barriss_Coffee posted: I especially appreciate the fact that you tell us where all those little, overlooked EU references come from... I mean, some of us aren't as sourcebook/RPG-savvy as you or Rogue_Follower over there.
The WEG material is some of my favorite to reference because so much of it was so good, and so little of it is known or used. Pablo's Rookies webstrip has been a lot of fun.
Take care,

Does anyone know if we will ever see a completely exposed Kaleesh face?
Or will it be among those things like Yoda's species, Sidious' beginning, etc..

Yeah but you listed Quarmall, and he didn't kill him, he ordered droids to shoot him.

Oh, and you're mistaken about at Belderone Grievous tells the droids to "Raise the ship. Prepare to fire all guns on my command."

Would seem to me to be more or less the same as "pushing the button", seeing as how droid have no buttons and have to rely on commands.

I consider it a Grievous kill, I just consider the other kill I mentioned a Grievous kill as well.
But it's ok that Halagad didn't list it, I still love the article.

Super_Battle_Droid posted: So you think some other authors will spill the beans some? I'm hoping some might be mentioned in the New Essential Guide to Aliens in the Kaleesh article, can't wait for that book, and article.
Maybe. In general, I don't think we've seen the last of Grievous.

I haven't.

That would be great, but Galactic Battlegrounds states in its own little Databank/encyclopedia that she came from Csilla.
Personally, I feel a good retcon would be that she was exiled at an early age due to her Darkside tendencies, and met up with Dooku by way of Thule, perhaps after she met up with other Chiss renegades (like her boyfriend...)
>>>Anything like this? <<<
Yeah...
In true, "All your base are belong to us" and "The truck have started to move" style, I present Dear Anakin (translated from Aurebesh by the kind eddie1969):
[Page 1]
It’s been so long since you left this planet. I find myself stopping at the junkyard, because I still feel like you are standing by us.
You really were our hero from that time.
You look like a god for me, a machine-illiterate.
You, always sprightly and thoughtful to your mom, were and still have been our hero.
[Page 2]
Anakin, you made a podracer by yourself.
Many adults made a laughingstock of you, but it seems like yesterday when we were strongly excited looking at your engine test.
The podrace in the dust was really amazing.
We really worried about you looking at so many people were retired during the race.
But there was no need of worry.
When you won the victory, I don’t know why, but I cried.
It may be because I felt you were leaving us and going far away.
[Page 3]
I got wind that you are flying around the cosmos.
You are our hero.
Because you can fly in that dark cosmos.
If you get tired in the dark cosmos, come see us at Tatooine.
We still are and always will be your friend.
May the Force be with you
Your true friend,
Kitster
