For some reason I've been re-reading Rebel Dream recently, and I really do like the section where Luke first spots Lord Nyax watching him from a neighbouring skyscraper. We don't quite know what Nyax is at this point, and it's also worrying to see how Nyax can influence even Luke in the Force.

Just a good little bit.

Oh, i forgot the clone wars cartoon. While I love the whole thing, two peices stood out.

1. Grevious killing the Jedi in episode 21. Grevious's voice was perfect, his attack animations so somthe, his fighting style so unquie (love the constant use of feet), and the song they played is one one of the best of all star wars. I still have a fangasm watching him toss jedi into the wall of the ship.

It was also cool when the gunship busted in to fight Grevious off.

2. The prophacy of the Ghost Hand. I normaly hate prophacies, but I loved this one. Especaily the final instant when the lines take on Darth Vader's face.

If we're going to talk about Clone Wars, then Mace Windu in episodes 12 and 13 is definitely on my 20 memorable EU moments. Especially episode 13. I mean, there he is: his entire army decimated, his lightsaber lost in the battle, and surrounded by thousands of Super Battle Droids with blasters pointed straight at him ... and the Jedi Master still plows through them like nobody's business.

And now, the top twenty!

20. I am . . . Yu’shaa – Force Heretic 1: Remnant – Sean Williams/Shane Dix

The NJO has its flaws, to put it mildly. But it also had its strengths. One of those strengths was in its supporting characters, who were often (read: Kyp, Ganner, Droma, Tsavong Lah, Viqi Shesh, etc.) much more interesting than the main characters. And there is little debate, at least to my mind, that the most interesting character of the entire series was Nom Anor, a villain who had as little loyalty to his allies as he did to his enemies.

In some of the books (notably this very trilogy), I found myself skimming over sections with the main characters, racing to get back to Nom Anor’s plot. He had a fantastic arc and he was always written in a believable and likeable fashion.

And this was certainly the ironic zenith to his plot arc. The skeptic, the realist, the one who has never believed the Vong mythos becomes the great revivalist, the evangelist, the Prophet.

Cut off from his own people because of his repeated and monumental failures, he finds himself caught up in a movement of Shamed Ones who see the Jedi as their redemption. The idea of the Vong’s religion and schism caused by it was well executed in these scenes. Eventually, Anor stops being swept up in it and decides, even though he may or may not believe it, to start doing some sweeping himself.

In the final moments of this book, Anor takes the plunge: he is the Prophet. Why? To get back at Shimmra? To once again achieve a measure of power? Or does he really believe? The action is as cryptic and fascinating as it usually is with this guy and we’re not even sure if he knows the reason why.

But we do know this: Nom Anor is the Prophet. Stunning. Hilarious. Ironic. Number 20.

Yeah, I kind of regretted not including any Nom Anor moments in mine. He tended to be good in an overall sense, so it was hard to pick a specific moment.

Yeah, there are a couple of books on my list that I really hated leaving off, but there was no way to pick a single moment from the books as better than any other. So, they aren't here. I'll talk about those after I'm done with the whole list, I guess. tongue

19. The stage is yours, Gallandro – Han Solo’s Revenge – Brian Daley

Daley, the critics like to say, didn’t know Star Wars. Maybe not. But the man could write. If this was a list of the top twenty action sequences (and that would be a fun list, no?) Daley would probably have several appearances here: the battle for Stars End, the speeder chase at the beginning of Lost Legacy, the incredible battle royale between miners and droids that closed that book, the two dueling sea monsters and the fight that explained where Han got his scar, the speeder bike chase from this very book . . . the man was incredible.

But the finest blaster showdown he ever wrote was the one that didn’t happen.

In Han Solo’s Revenge, Daley set up a fantastic foil for Han, Gallandro, a flashy gunman with a lightning quick draw and there was a constant tension as we knew the two would eventually face off.

And at the very end of Revenge, it looked like that was going to happen. Gallandro and Han faced off. But before they drew down, Gallandro needed something from Han, a security case that had been the books MacGuffin. Han presented it, but as he did so, he triggered a security device on the case, delivering a paralysis shock to both his and Gallandro’s right arm. The two could still face off, but they would have to draw with their left hands.

And Gallandro backed down.

For me, this one of the quintessential Han Solo moments. Things look bad, so lets shake things up. The new situation might have been a disaster: after all, Han didn’t know, maybe Gallandro was as good with his left as he was with his right. But it was worth a try. And it paid off.

Gallandro and Solo would form a tenuous alliance in the final book in the Daley trilogy, Han Solo and the Lost Legacy. And then, finally, after teasing us without mercy for two books, Daley gave us the face off we wanted. And, in a moment that almost made this list itself, Gallandro beat Solo to the draw!. And his life was only saved because of the locale where the gunfight took place. In other words, rigging that security case to do what it did was the smartest thing Solo could have done: it delayed the fight, yes, and in delaying the fight, it ultimately saved Han’s life.

As he says, immediately after, “I had to change the odds a little. Hope you don’t mind.” Oh, not at all, Han, not at all.

Daley may not have "known" Star Wars, but to be fair, at the time there wasn't much Star Wars to know, and his books were great fun. Greater fun than almost any written since.

Remnant's writing and plot was horrendous for authors of that calibre.

I can't really list all of my favorite Eu moments but I can put down a few.

Some of the most memorable EU moments for me are Boba Fett's single-handed destruction of an entire Imperial garrison in "Last one standing." cool Mara discovering she's pregnant in "Balance point" shock Anakin Solo's death in "Star by Star" cry and Yoda floating around and bumping into walls in a hollow astromech chasis from "Dark Rendezvous" laugh

18. None shall pass! – Traitor, Matthew Woodring Stover

It was, by any standards, the most mind blowing of the NJO books. It shouldn’t have worked: a tight focus, a philosophical basis, a theory that shook the foundation of everything we believed about the Force. But it succeeded magnificently. Jacen’s debates with Vergere were dark, heartfelt and stunning.

Whether you agreed with the philosophy put forth in this book, it was still thought provoking and challenging, something most of the EU simply isn’t.

But for a book about Jacen and Vergere, the most satisfying moment was given to a supporting character, Ganner, who’s character arc is one of the best of the entire NJO, right up there with Nom Anor and Kyp, in my opinion.

And this moment is a stunning one, where a character finally comes to grips with everything: his situation, his past, his future, himself, his own demons, his strengths and weaknesses and sells it all for the greater good. It has showed up on other lists and rightly so. It is a moment of supreme importance from the character perspective. It is a moment of mythological import in a series that had lost the myth. And it is, at bottom, just a great sequence of a Jedi cutting loose and kicking ass.

Rare is the sequence that succeeds on so many levels, from the immediate gut reaction to the metaphorical and mythological symbolism.

Vergere tells Jacen that she has seen into the future, into a moment where the Vong’s religion opens to allow a mythical figure called The Ganner, complete with an archway, emblazoned with the words “None Shall Pass.” He broke into the Vong mythology. And he broke into mine too.
