I finally finished the book... cant wait for the next one... grin ... need more clones...

even the probability that the clones might become normal people is interesting although I have a feeling its a red herring or a quest for the fountain of youth... normal people meaning non age accelerated clones.

Is there another book due out?

If this one sells well enough, almost certainly. Ms. Traviss has said before that she'd be interested in doing more...

That is great news as I loved the first book and I have this one setting on my desk.

Okay, in this book is there any action in there? Is it a lot of action or more stupid character development stuff that could come out of the USA TODAY or the BBC News? Sorry, but the clone wars have been quite shoddy in the novel department. Is there action in it? Yes or NO? Is it a lot?

If you're going to base your opinion on a book by the amount of action in it, you might as well not read it at all.

Wow, my local college bookstore actually had this in stock. And it was almost out! So I greedily picked mine up fast!

That is, in fact, the first time that my college has had a Star Wars paperback within a few days of the release date since August.

There's not another book....yet, but there is another short story in the next Insider. Direct from Karen herself-

I'll have a new Republic commando short story in issue #87 of Insider. (That's the one that ships to subscribers around the end of March or early April.) The art is by the sublime Robert Hendrickson, who illustrated Targets in #81.

The story is called ODDS and it's set a few months after the end of Triple Zero. It features Atin from Omega Squad and Null ARC Lieutenants Mereel and Prudii. Between them, they discover that the first casualty of war, as we all know only too well these days, is a precious and fragile thing called the truth.

I've been sitting on this one for a few months; it answers a question that I wouldn't be drawn on at the time. But now, as we journos say, the real story can be told.

Two ARCs through the whole short story? Ms. Traviss, you spoil us. tongue

But then again, Delta Squad wasn't shown all that much in Triple Zero, even though that was one of the main seeling points of the novel - a cooperation between Omega and Delta squads. Despite being on the cover and all... tired

Regardless, it was a fine look into the heads of the clones, although the focus seemed to drift from what makes a clone tick at times.

And I really do love how it ends. Oya, Kal'buir!

Actually, I think that's Omega Squad.

They just wear the same armor.

Nope.

Definitely Delta on the cover.

Omega wears matte-black throughout. Delta is mentioned as wearing the exact same armor as in the game (and on the cover).

I imagine Traviss doesn't like working with characters she didn't make.

I can't say as I blame her, either, as doing so is considerably more difficult, in that your options are much, much more limited in terms of the storytelling.

On the other hand, there was her story about Vader in Insider, which was well-received by all, as I recall, which would suggest that while she probably likes writing her own characters better, she's more than happy to write the big ones, too. thinking

But then again, she is the one who agreed to make a book set in in an expanded universe, that was the spinoff of a game that was itself the spinoff of a movie. Given that, she should probably have been a bit more willing to work around others. I'm still scratching my head as to why the official RC spinoff novel had nothing to do with the game.

I've wondered the same thing a few times, but then I'm not terribly inclined to complain, because I've yet to see a good "game tie-in" and I've seen plenty of bad ones. I'm not arguing that she might have been somewhat better from a marketing point of view to have included the original squad a bit more, nor am I arguing that she shouldn't use characters not her own. I was simply saying that, as someone who has done a fair bit of writing and is currently working on a project he hopes to get published someday - I'd much rather tell my own story, too. And apparently LFL agreed more with her idea for it than with the idea of an actual game tie-in, probably thanks to Ruins of Dantooine.

I'd also posit that she is using the regular characters of the universe in her own books.

And here's a thought for you: the X-Wing books were basically game tie-ins, especially when they first started coming out. Yet not a one of those characters is in any way related to the games. How does that square? And do we have an issue with the fact that they're not? Quite the opposite, I'd say, for at least a simple majority of the people who are on these boards.

I'm not trying to argue with you here (for that matter, I really don't even know if we're actually in disagreement about any of this), just pointing out some things for consideration while we're on the topic.

happy

Oh, not this again. She's writing LOTF, with plenty of characters she didn't create. The reason seems to be that Delta's story is primarily told through the games, and she doesn't want to step on that. Therefore she made her own squad, and it seems that she plotted out a nice arc for them, which meant that when she was given another book, she worked largely on that.

Anyway, the book was ori'kandosii. And Bardan Jusik is kriffing spectacular!

Just finished reading the book. Overall I'd say it's quite good. Very dark and character-driven.

It is very Mandalorian-y. IMO, it's 2nd only to Open Seasons in it's coverage of Mandos. The glossery in the back isn't just for kicks; there's tons of Mando terms. Usually it says what they mean in the text, or it's a common word, so you don't really need to flip to the back.

One interesting thing: We never see anything from the terrorist's point of view, ever. I guess that's how it is in real life.

Also, a number of Star Wars issues are addressed. The idea that clones are "programmed" is discredited. The long lifespans of the GFFA are mentioned; Skirata is middle-aged at 60. Also, I think there was a brief note about female jedi remembering their births? I don't remember where though.
