Im almost done reading Hard Contact. I put off reading it for a while because if I had started reading without 000 to latch onto after I was done, then I would have gone stir crazy with the waiting, so Ill most likely begin 000 Monday.

City of Pearl rocked, in fact, that's the book that prevented me from reading Hard Contact sooner.

*realizes she still has 3 KT books left to read* Joy! grin

I hope the kid is a girl, just so we can have a female Mando EU character, or maybe Etain can have two kids eventually.

To confirm for doubters:

Yes, Darman and Etain have sex. Lots of off-screen sex. Enough for Etain to become pregnant, with a boy, who will be entrusted to Kal when he's old enough, because the prospect of letting the Jedi get hold of a Force-sensitive half-Mandalorian child scares the bejeebers out of Mom-To-Be.

I assume either Etain's certainty of the sex is in part a Force-vision of the future, or the Force allows her knowledge on a molecular level, since she's at most 2 weeks pregnant and I'm not sure fetal gender is even physiologically present at that point. Not that it matters in a society where medical miracles are an everyday occurance.

Oh, and for those who have read Dark Nest: Etain mentions using the Force to accelerate her pregnancy, in the same vein as Tenel-Ka slowing down hers. Huh. Now that's handy-- and I wonder if female Jedi can manipulate their personal cycles to make them more convenient too? grin

I feel sad for her already, since during the book she began to have issues with her biological parents giving her up, her closeness with and attachment to the men under her command, and her grappling with what constitutes a family unit. The kid is little more than a clump of cells, and already she's destined to give him up. Sad.

Also, there are strong hints that Ordo the Null ARC has a thing going with Treasury Agent Besany Wennen, and Atin with a blue Twi'lek waitress. Which is cool, because it's just one more sign that the Republic's mindless army of clone drones isn't so mindless or drone-like, that they are human & have wills & minds. Take that, corrupt Jedi!

I forgot to mention last night that the book also includes a glossary, which is a nice touch, though for the most part you can understand from context what the Mandalorian/military terms mean.

(I hope I've done the spoiler-black-out correctly-- I've never used it before.)

Jabiimi terrorists. Which I'm assuming ties in with the comic arc about Anakin on Jabiim and I only read in TPB because of the Empire comic arc of Wedge & Hobbie in X-wings over Jabiim while some guy named Luke Skywalker was confronted with his father's actions on the planet during Republic and (see my icon) I wanted to understand the background while I read about the pilots.

Speaking of pilots, Triple Zero also contains a Wedge-centric excerpt of Betrayal. I did all my fangirl-ish squeeing in my LJ, so I'll spare you that.

So drink one more round on me
Let’s sing an old melody
Hold your drinks up high, and toast the night
Hold your baby strong, help me sing that old song
I think that one more drink, might do me right

Yes.

The excerpt opens in Coronet City, Corellia, with Wedge Antilles, in his underwear, answering his door in the middle of the night.

Hang on, I need a second to get past "Wedge Antilles, in his underwear."

*Ahem*

Alrighty then.

His building is "given over to military retirees such as himself. Some were retired from the New Republic, some from CorSec-- Corellian Security-- some from other Corellian armed forces."

It has tight security and so the appearance of two youngish people at his door in the middle of the night is cause for concern. With Iella covering him out of sight from the doorway, he lets them in, runs their ID through his door-side security system, and finds out they want him specifically because of his & Rogue Squadron's experience preparing to take Coruscant from Imperial forces.

He agrees to go with them, insists that they leave his quarters while he says goodbye to his wife and younger daughter Miri, who is asleep down the hall in her bedroom, and grabs his go-bag. Iella expresses concern that the male "visitor", Lieutenant Titch, looks like enforcement-- big, a "wrestler", probably there with female "visitor" Captain Barthis from the Intelligence Section to make sure Wedge doesn't cause trouble.

"The female visitor, a well-muscled blonde woman who looked to be at least as tall as Wedge-- not that this was unusual, as Wedge stood slightly shorter than the average human male-- said, "General Antilles?"

"He moved," Wedge said. "I think he's over in Zed Block. He left the carpets a mess, too."

Hee!

(edited because if I'm going to fuss about proofreading, I should do the same to my own posts.)

For lack of a better term, is it very Mandalorian-y?

Well, you've got a couple of true-blue Mando guys running the operation in this one, so yes, there's plenty of Mando material.

I think you'll find that if you read carefully, you see that Traviss isn't saying the clones are Mandalorian so much as, they've been raised with its traditions, customs and language by real Mando sergeants. So that gives them a rich cultural background to draw on, which may help offset being raised by genius-fish in a sterile environment.

It's very good, a very good read. This one will hook you. And Karen knows how to write a cliff-hanger-- woo!

This book dosn't feel like Star Wars at all. The clones seem nothing like the clones portrayed in the movies or any other media. KT is so Mandalorian and military based that I fear for her contributions to LOTF. I was really hoping to get back to the SW spirit that NJO lacked, but after this book I fear if she can pull it off. Her writing is just too "Earthy" or something. Not that she is a bad writer, she is great, but just not right for Star Wars.

Odd. Did you get that impression with HC as well? Because I certainly didn't, so I'd be curious if this is a personal interpretation issue or not.

Also - you are taking into account that this is a squad of RC's with highly differentiated personalities and backgrounds that differ drastically from the normative clone you're comparing to, yes? Have you played Republic Commando? Because that gives a unique view of clones, too. Not saying you haven't on any of these, just asking so as to be better able to guage your response to the book. happy

Or do you think that to be Star Wars it absolutely has to involve the Big Name characters saving the entire galaxy from the next unspeakable evil threat..

As for the too military based comments.. laughable.. 2nd Word in the title War. War involves Military.

I am not refering to the Commandos, but the regular clone commanders, troopers, and ARC's. Not the Null Arc's even, the standard ones are nothing like the comics/cartoon/other books. It's just this book... it just didn't click with me. Just my opinion, I'm sure a lot of people will love it, especially mando fans.
