Apart from the fact that at times SOTE reads like a video game (which is no real surprise in a way) SOTE is actually one of my favourite novels of the EU and it really was the start when George started putting bits of the EU into G-canon.

The battle scenes are quite gooid, not confusing at all which is saying quite a lot. And there's humour in it that never stops being funny, particularly through Dash Rendar.

"My name is Man with a Blaster About to Cook You!" laugh

And even though Xizor can bee seen in some lights a Gary Stu, some of the scene with him and Leia are...well...you know... drooling

SotE was my first EU novel and is still one of my favorites. Despite the fact you knew it had to lead right into RotJ, the entire book was really exciting and felt almost like Episode 5.5. I haven't tried Medstar yet, as the premise seems boring.

SOTE is the book that restored my faith in the EU after a long series of terribly bad books that Bantam chucked out.

It's difficult to judge Perry's writing on its own merits, since the only novel he wrote alone was based on a storyline created by other people.

That said, I didn't care for SotE or MedStar at all. SotE in particular was characterized by juvenile prose and a very, very contrived plot, although again Perry can't really be blamed for the latter aspect.

Perhaps that's why I liked it.

It's not the best novel, but it may be the fastest read of them all. It flows well, has a methodical element (the videogame idea from above) and he artfully paints a picture based on a narrow concept from a game.

Sometimes I think people forget this was a novel based on the game...you can't hold it to the same expectations as original work. With what he was presented, he did an amazing job.

*Note* Anyone who can paint Darth Vader at the height of his Darkness as a sympathetic character HAS to be good.

So Devaronian females are suppose to have thick fur, eh?
Has anyone seen one outside an essential guide?
...
When even the creative teams refuse to make fuzzy Devaronians...it should be a clue, folks.
Thus endeth the lesson.

I can't say his writing style impressed me, but then again I didn't find it juvenile, either. He's been able to create some very interesting characters, although they can smack of Gary-Stuism. I appreciate the way he showed combat going into slow-mo for Luke -- little touches like that. All in all, a solid, fun, and creative writer. One of the better ones.

Xizor is one of the great villains. It was also interested just how much sex there was in SOTE - surely a first for the EU, and probably not duplicated again until the KOTOR games. A lot of the other stuff in SOTE - Black Sun, Skyhooks, HRDs, Teras Kasi - were also neat additions, although who knows how much of that was actually from Perry himself.

However, I dislike the positioning of Xizor as rivalling Vader in power and above everyone else save Palpatine, the hyping of Dash as a painfully obvious Han replacement, and the bad interpretation of the "many Bothans died" line.

I don't know about that. Wolverton was fairly raunchy in COPL, and the BFC didn't shy away from sex either.

SOTE was the first Star Wars novel I read, and I'm still reading them to this day, so that has to count for something.

However, seeing as that was...wow, I think, seven...years ago, and I was much younger then, my memory of the book is somewhat blurry. I do, however, vividly remember Dash's "My name is man with a blaster about to shoot you" line. tongue

I also loved MedStar, although it's a little hard to tell what all belonged to whom there (despite a few obvious things from each author).

Additionally, I quite enjoyed Shadows of the Empire: Evolution. That comic was just really fun to read.
