Unless LOTF has been a bigger success then anyone ever even fathomed, I think the book record is still Heir to the Empire. I wish I could find a reference to confirm that, but I know I've seen it indicated as such somewhere and there is nothing I feel more comfortable staking a guess on.

Comics become a tougher one because of long sales lives, reprints and trade paperbacks. Certain series may be very successful in TPB but not in issue release (Dark Empire I think suffered this way) where Legacy seems to be extremely successful right now in issue release. I have no clue as to the marvel era sales, but add in the rerelease in TPB, they might have the widest sales. The Thrawn Trilogy in Comic form were also pretty widely successful.

Somebody find a LFL archive on sales numbers.

HTTE is probably the top selling EU book, though the classic trilogy novelizations probably have sold more.

I asked Sue Rostoni over at TOS, and here was her response:

I would hazard a guess that the novelization of STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE is the bestselling novel. I don't know about the comics, except that DARK EMPIRE keeps going back for reprints...

Surprising, to be sure. Movie and game novelisations are so rigidly written. Why'd they be bestsellers? You have no creative freedom at all. Interesting.

Well, you gotta consider that back when SW hit, they didn't really have a home video market to relive the movie on over and over again- thus why things like novelization, comic adaptation, radio drama, etc became outlets to do so.

Add to that the additional sales even after that era (at least, what? 4 reissues in the last 15 years alone), it's easily the top.

I think the rigidness of the novelizations depend on the author- sometimes you just get a play-by-play, other times you get added details like Luke's earlier trench run, to more fully fleshed out character arcs like Anakin in ROTS.

And DE, with it being both one of the more controversial and significant story events in the EU, certainly makes sense as a top seller.

It was as popular as the Thrawn trilogy when it came out. Even without the reissues, I wouldn't be surprised if it were the top seller.

I think the TPBs of Dark Empire have been hugely popular, but I don't think the monthly issues were. It would be interesting to see comics broke down that way.

Based on what I know of just people with monthlies, the most common Star Wars comics are marvel eras. I think the Dark Horse era of Star Wars has been dominated by TPBs. Who owns the monthlies of DE or Crimson? I know one guy...I know 20-25 who own the TPBs including myself.

I wonder if sales are monitored purely by dollar amount sold or by issue sold or if they divide sales value between monthlies and TPBs. I bet they do.

Another thing to keep in mind when discussing comics is the price change we have seen in monthlies over the past 25 years. Dark Horse books sell for roughly four dollars (US) while the earlier Marvel line sold of under one dollar. Not an even comparison. So we need to either count books sold or somehow account for inflation, because comparing uncorrected sales is like comparing apples and mujas.

Actually, DHC SW issues sell for about $3 US.

The legacy star wars comics have gone back for a second printing as individual issues. I believe that this is rare for a star wars comic.

I thought I read somewhere that there are 70 million SW novels in print and 15 million of those are HttE.

Well, top-grossing movies of all time lists are measured in dollar amounts, rather than ticket amounts. Seeing as how tickets were a heck of a lot cheaper in 1977, it's actually phenomenal that Star Wars is still in the top five.

Top twenty grossing films in the United States, of all time:

---------------------------------------------------------

1. Titanic (1997) $600,779,824
2. Star Wars (1977) $460,935,665
3. Shrek 2 (2004) $436,471,036
4. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) $434,949,459
5. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) $431,065,444
6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) $421,392,843
7. Spider-Man (2002) $403,706,375
8. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) $380,262,555
9. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) $377,019,252
10. Spider-Man 2 (2004) $373,377,893
11. The Passion of the Christ (2004) $370,270,943
12. Jurassic Park (1993) $356,784,000
13. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) $340,478,898
14. Finding Nemo (2003) $339,714,367
15. Forrest Gump (1994) $329,691,196
16. The Lion King (1994) $328,423,001
17. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) $317,557,891
18. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) $313,837,577
19. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) $310,675,583
20. Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) $309,125,409

---------------------------------------------------------

Check out SW's strong representation. Whoop whoop! All this info can be found on imdb --- http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross , and for worldwide: http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross?region=world-wide Star Wars is #12 worldwide. If it were measured in ticket sales, I'm fairly certain that SW would be #1.

But back on topic! I prefer individual issues over trades --- I eBayed Dark Empire in late 2003 and got all 14 individual issues. Do the trades have all of the info at the back about the Ancient Jedi lore, and whatnot? The individual issues also have reader mail at the back, which are pretty neat to look back at.

>>Do the trades have all of the info at the back about the Ancient Jedi lore, and whatnot?<<

The 1st and 2nd printings do, but not the 3rd printing (with the "new" non-Dorman cover art)

>>The individual issues also have reader mail at the back, which are pretty neat to look back at.<<

Yeah, sometimes some interesting tidbits come out of those- IIRC, one of the reader mail columns (likely for one of the TOTJ series) was the one to reveal the original intention of there only being 12 Dark Lords of the Sith prior to Vader. So, of historical curiosity and interest, mainly.
