I'm wondering what's the earliest bit of EU in which we see stormtroopers decked out in their original trilogy regalia. I'm curious as to how long they used the phase 2 clonetrooper armor.

Stormtrooper armor was used as early as 16:6, a mere two weeks after the declaration of a New Order.

That sucks, the phase 2 clone armor is my favorite out of the three designs. What story was that in?

"Command Decision." Since that one was published way back when the Clone Wars were a bigger conflict occurring 20 years earlier, I'd say it'd be safe to just say the stormies were wearing phase II armor, unless one of the accompanying illustrations explicitly showed otherwise (I can't remember).

Or maybe not; the soldiers react with surprise and wariness to the presence of the stormies, suggesting that something about them is unfamiliar, as opposed to the ubiquitous clones.

Pretty sure stormie armor was also in In His Image, the short story in Vader: The Ultimate Guide. That was a few months after Episode 3, I think. Although they hadn't yet fully phased out the Phase II armor.

It seems that elite units were getting it fairly early, but the Phase II likely wasn't totally gone until several years in.

I agree that Phase II is by far the most pleasing design, though.

Now, now, at least the Empire has cooler Star Destroyer designs.

I too am disappointed about the short span of time that Phase II was used. Definately the coolest design. When was that Naboo mission in Battlefront II? Couldn't have been more than six months after RotS. Although i would like the explination that only the elites got the stormie armor to start out with, and it took a while for the rest to get it. But if I were in charge, the armor wouldn't switch untill five or six years after RotS.

My theory is that Palpatine was pissy about the Mandalorian influences pervading his new ST corps, and the changes in aesthetics were a response to that. It also explains why they switched out of phase I helmets so quickly.

Phase II armor suffers from the same problem the Venators, Eta-2s, and all the ROTS designs do. Because of the timing of the Clone Wars campaign, the new elements couldn't appear until they had been finalized in the movie, and with the faux real time thing LFL was doing, that meant they only showed up at the tail end of the war, in and out of universe. Then with ROTS, everybody was so anxious to emphasize that the Empire was here that we got stormie armor, ISDs, and even the TIE being designed literally right after ROTS. So both in and out of universe, we get them in use for maybe half a year, tops. Now, I think (I hope) someone will be conscientious enough that the ROTS tech doesn't vanish overnight, but even if it is mingled in with the new, it really should have had its time in the sun. Like the final Imperial fleet shot of ROTS, with the awesome grey Imperial Venators: that's the sort of thing I want to see. A transition from the PT to the OT, not a switch being flicked so we get 20 years of the OT before ANH.

Yep. I really wish the ROTS designs had been finalized earlier, or if they were, shared with the EU creators. Obi-Wan and Anakin should have had more than six months as Jedi Master/Council member and Knight, respectively. I wouldn't have minded ditching the space-mullet earlier, either. wink

It's really a pity, but that's the problem with working as things come out. No one knew much going in to AOTC, either, so we got endless stories set right around TPM and no real lead-up to the movie (TAS hardly counts). And of course, once we did get the movie, everyone wanted to play with the Clone Wars, so no one went back to build up the backstory, besides JF:OS and Bounty Hunter, which both focus on one tiny element of the backstory.

I just wish it were different for Legacy... I mean, they had like 3 changes over 10 years but after 100 they haven't done anything? Its lack of creativity more than anything... atleast they're not all using the same gun now...

There are minor aesthetic changes.

But I don't think they wanna change the aesthetic of Stormies too much. Stormies were such a presence during the 20 years of the Empire and the other hundred-some years of the Remnant until the Fel dynasty made it an Empire again. Everyone without a character shield sees Stormies and thinks "We're karked!" Why would you wanna take that away from your troops if you've got it built in already. Improve the tech, but keep the fear-inspiring aesthetic intact as much as possible.
