*nods*

Including the awesome "Simple Tricks", the absolute last word on Bantam-era Star Wars.

I don't think it was originally written to be the envoi to the contract, but it's the final story in Tales from the New Republic, the last thing Bantam did - released after Vector Prime - and it's perfect there...

"Simple Tricks" is also the story that redeemed Kyp Durron, showing that sometimes, the impossible is far easier than it appears.

I'll write more in the morning - lots to talk about (Fen and Dogder, storylines, use of language) - but I just wanted to say that...

cool peace

I always intended to get everyone who writes.

Doesn't change the fact that I have run out of most of my major contingent.

Still holding Zahn, Traviss, K-Mac, Abel, and Saxton in reserve . . .

Saving the most controversial for last, eh?

Excepting Mr. Peña, of course, unless we're to argue about what his next project ought to focus on.

(Sorry for not contributing to the topic: I haven't yet gotten around to reading any of the authors in question's work.)

There's plenty of comic authors left.

Do Stephen Barnes next.

I actually never read the Star Wars Adventure Journal (bring it back, please!), but their stories in Tales from the New Republic were pretty good. I enjoyed the constant clashing between Ghitsa and Fen, and the story with a Kyp Durron cameo (Simple Tricks I believe it was) was one of the few occasions where the cameo seemed natural, not forced or contrived.
All in all, they're solid, all-around good writers.

I liked how they used in-universe media to make the world feel more real. The characters watch the news, and half-jokingly pine for celebrities.

They also do what authors hired for the Star Wars Adventure Journal did best, and so few since have even done at all - told compelling stories with characters who aren't big movie characters.

As for those actually looking for their stories in the Adventure Journal . . . don't bother. IIRC, the two stories that appeared in Tales of the New Republic were scheduled for journals that were ultimately canceled, so TftNR was their first appearance; the third story comes from Star Wars Gamer.

Never read their stuff, but you say they used the news well? Then kudos to them. I found it was very effective and cool in Bloodlines, not to mention something we rarely see. Good for them.

Well, I don't know about "well," but one of the characters has a crush on Han Solo, and one of the stories takes place concurrently with Courtship. So we get to see character actually watching the news, and her reaction to Solo "ruining his life" by getting married to someone other than her. ;-)

It was fun and lighthearted and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't particularly tied to the plot, if that's what you meant.

I agree that they were very good at establishing believable "little people" who engaged in the universe at a normal level. They also did the best Kyp portrayal ever. Very solid stories, though I must lament their use of smuggler-in-tramp-freighter characters, who are badly overused, especially in the AJ stuff. Still, some of the better smuggler characters to have been done, so I can cut them some slack there.
