Jedi_Master_Luc posted: Shaak Ti, which i have always called 'Shock Tee' was recently pronounced WAY different than it even looks! As well Aayla Secura which i've said 'Aye-Lah Secure-a'. Also Xizor. Which i always said 'Sheezore'. Am i wong on any of these things? I hate asking other people because the ONLY people who know for SURE are probably the writers and aside from John Ostrander i don't know of any other writers on here. I suppose it's all relative, but it is a little difficult with all these strange names.
Master Luc
I pronounce all of those exactly the same as you do.

Ris_jSarek posted: I was weird, I guess. Until I was corrected at Celebration IV, I always pronounced it as "Haw-payss" or "Haw-pess."
Sounds like how I go for it. I'm more of a "Happ-ayze", though. I don't think I can ever bring myself to rhyme it with "grapes".
As for Shaak Ti --- I normally pronounce double vowels hardly (as in, Admiral "Dolla" rather than "Dalla"), but I've always said "Shack", even before Ki-Adi-Mundi did in Episode 21 of Clone Wars.
Sauron_18 posted:
1) Lumiya: Audiobook says "Loo-MY-ah", I've always said "Loo-me-ah". Their pronounciation seems okay, but it seemed very weird to me, didn't seem to fit what was written, thoughts?
2) Alema: Audiobook says "Aleema", I've always said it "Al-em-ah". Again, I go by how it's written, but I dunno.....
Yes! Thank you on Alema. It sounds so much better as "Al-uh-muh"/"Al-em-ah". As in... rhyming with gallon, but with an m rather than an n.
As for Lumiya --- I've read it as "Loo-MY-uh" since I first saw it written. Last year, I wrote this in my Betrayal review at the Official Site...
Jeff Ferguson posted: ...I suspect that Lumiya was using this lie to lure Jacen in, and that more on Vergere will be revealed as the series goes on. Maybe she can even return as a Force Ghost? Or maybe there was something in Destiny's Way that stated that she couldn't anymore... I can't recall. ?:| But in any case, Lumiya was more like "Lu-Lie-A!"
...
Of course, for that pun to work, I'll have to assume that I've been pronouncing "Lumiya" correctly this past year or so. Can anyone who's listened to the audiobook help me out? I say "Loo-MY-uh."
And Sue Rostoni replied!
Eeusu Estornii posted:
I'm listening to the audio book now but haven't gotten to that part. However, I've always pronounced it as you have, "Loo-MY-uh" but I've been told (by a credible source) that it's actually "Loo-ME-uh." Oh well. I was using the Cloud City pronounciation, I guess, and not the Coruscanti pronounciation.

I used to say BARE-iss, but then I read that meditation scene in Battle Surgeons and now it's BARE-ass.

How do you pronounce "Hapan?" I've always read it as "Huh-pahn," but recently it dawned on me that since Hapes is apparently pronounced "Hayps," then maybe Hapan might be pronounced "Hay-pen." Help, anyone?

It often helps when a name is based on a real word.

I've been reading everybody's posts for quite a while and noticed there are no opinions from people who speak other languages. I'm not a native speaker of english so I will throw in my own weird pronounciation. Lumiya- Loo-mee-uh Hapes- Ah-pehs Gillad Pellaeon- Gee-lahdd Peh-lah-eh-on Shaak Ti- Shack Tee Xizor- Sheezore

Most of those are on the money, except for Hapes, which is pronounced Hay-pees. For the most part it's English phonetics that dominate. I'm pretty sure Gilad starts with a hard G (it's a real name, guys, look it up) and Pellaeon is pronounced pell-AE-on, with the middle syllable rhyming with the word "way."
I'll post this again from the locked thread, in case purpillian comes back.

I'm curious as to why you're adding vowel sounds to the beginning consonants, and I'm wondering if maybe you're bilingual and that's a language rule I'm not familiar with - you'll find that our cultural backgrounds often ignite arguments over pronunciation on this board, for example the canon pronunciation of "Kun" is "koon" which apparently doesn't make sense to a lot of posters but it's always been the way I pronounced it. Another example is the people who pronounce the name Jacen "Jay-kin" - there's no way that the C could make a hard sound there in standard English, but a friend of mine from an Irish family is used to hard C's in Celtic.
Anyway, in English you'll very rarely if ever find a Q without a U after it, but even in foreign words the Q tends to just take on a K sound, never "Kay." Therefore Q'Anilia is probably pronounced "KanILLia," or if the U is meant to be implied, "KwanILLia."
Same principle goes for K'Kruhk. As it stands - and I could be wrong - I don't see a reason to assign that particular sound to the single letter K. I usually pronounce it either "Kruhk" or "Kuh-Kruhk."
purpilian posted: Jeisel (Jah-zell)
Could be an accent difference, but where I'm from EI is usually pronounced "-ay" or "-ai." It could also conceivably be pronounced "-ee."
puprilian posted:
purpilian posted: :Chase Piru (Peru)
Hm...I'm really beginning to think there's an accent or language difference, considering the consistency. Anyway, I'd usually pronounce the I as an "-ee" in this particular case, perhaps an "-ih."
I really am curious what led you to these, though. If you don't mind my asking...
Oh, also, the New Essential Guide to Characters has pronunciations beside most, if not all, the names.
Can anyone else help, there?

I like that pronounciation. It doesn't sound like a sexually transmitted disease (*cough* herpes *cough*) or a fruit (grapes).

useless fact: Hapes got "translated" to "Hapan" in German. As the name, not the adjective. The adjective might even have become "hapanisch" which is of course more like "Hapanese". Force knows why...
