If you stop buying the hardbacks and go for the paperbacks, you get the book cheaper and with bonus content. I fail to see the malfunction here.

Unless you live in, say, the Yukon, you should be able to interlibrary loan it, at worst. I spent years getting the HCs from the library then waiting to buy the PPBs. (These days I've given up on both but that's another matter....)
