Well, that went fairly well. Have a log.
And the client is disabled yet again, sadly.

Yeah. I probably shoulda gone earlier, but that was perfect. Also, I have no idea what was on-topic and what wasn't.
Will I ever finish that book? Probably not...

Would anyone be up for a Vector chat once the final chapter has come out?
Dunc, could you add an "Upcoming Chats" section to the web site maybe?

I add them when we schedule them. Currently all we have is TCW.
I wouldn't schedule a comic chat until we know for sure the issue coming out. So remind me the week that we get that comic, okay?

log posted: 22:10 <RF> I also like that Padme is said to have died from asphyxiation, not that "she lost the will to live."
22:11 <Muuurgh> Yeah.
22:11 <Jello> it contradicts the movie, so it loses
22:11 <Jello> canon wars!11!!111
22:11 <Jello>
22:11 <RF> **** the movie.
22:11 <Jello> DVDs don't work that way
22:11 <RF> "losing the will to live" is dumb.
22:11 <Muuurgh> The droid was malfunctioning. :-P
22:11 <RF> Dumber than Jar Jar.
22:11 * jawastew has quit IRC (Quit: jawastew.)
22:11 <Jello> so is Anakin turning completely evil in 10 seconds
22:11 <RF> True...
22:12 <RF> But this deals with Padme.
22:12 <RF> So it gets double plus stupid points.
I thought we covered this...

What, that the explanation given for her death in the film is dumb as ****, and it's about time we get an actual medical reason? Yes, I'm sure it's been brought up before.
Or perhaps you're alluding to the idea that the medical records were doctored to say that the baby died with her, so we can't completely trust them? That's been covered too, though not in that chat.

As Jello pointed out above: "DVDs don't work that way". A book can't erase what took place in one of the films. It's never happened that way in the EU. Ever. That's the core idea behind "canon rules" that I used to think everyone understood.

What took place in the movie, though? Anakin chokes Padme. Afterwards, she dies, though the med droid states that it doesn't know why. Now, obviously, asphyxiation is not the only cause of Padme's death---otherwise the droid would have been able to heal her. But now we know a contributing physical factor in her death, when we didn't before. "Losing the will to live" is a silly cause of death. "Losing the will to live" plus asphyxiation is less silly.
Part of the purpose of the Expanded Universe is to explain things that weren't clear in the films. The cause of Padme's death was not completely clear. This book is explaining it further.

No, it isn't. We saw Padme die, and we saw that it wasn't from asphyxiation. "Medically she is completely healthy." The book merely delves into the perception of Padme's death on the part of people who weren't there.

Actually, Typho refers to autopsy reports, which describe her injuries in detail. It doesn't matter that the doctors who wrote the reports weren't there when she died, because they could still find any injuries she suffered that would have caused her death.
However, it does matter that the autopsy reports also mention that the child died with her, which casts doubt on their veracity. So, Reaves is giving a plausible explanation for her death---aside from the silly film explanation---but one that's not necessarily true.
So, I'll concede that the movie's explanation stands... unfortunately.

I completely forgot that this Sunday is supposed to be our Clone Wars chat.
Do we need a TCW chat? Quite honestly I don't even care at this point, but do you guys still want it? This would be on the movie and whatever various adaptions.
Or we could do a duo chat about the TFU novel, too.
We mostly need someone to lead them, since I really don't care (have only seen the movie, no real desire to dwell on it) and will probably spend the time uploading my vacation photos to Flickr. (And logging.)
