What?

I would assume Darth Vader can pull Star Destroyers out of the sky just like his apprentice.

Anyone have a problem with that?

The EU has never shown Vader as the sort of guy who can do that kind of thing though, alas - especially with his continuing "wussification" (Though I will be pleased if TFU does show him as the sort of guy who can pull that stuff off).

Man, I'm starting to think that the reason the "SA being kickass" thing bugs me so much is that I expected Anakin to be doing this sort of poodoo in the FILMS. Lucas hyped his potential up so much in TPM that I thought we were going to get some sort of awesome payoff. And we never EVER did.

Sucked.

And now, when it doesn't matter half as much, Lucas suddenly signs off on blowing the FOrce way out of proportion?!!! Why didn't he do this for the FILMS!

If the Force Unleashed trailer had been the Episode III trailer - except with Anakin bringing down a kark-off huge separatist ship, I bet you people would have been WAY more excited. I know I would have been.

Gah. If the SA survives, I really want Luke to kick his ass at some point. not_talking

Yes, Zorrixor, you get what I'm saying here.

Bigger isn't better, necessarily. Yoda's "size matters not speech" doesn't just apply to really big things. Pulling a star destroyer out of the sky isn't a major thing in the wider view. A more subtle approach to problem solving can have a much more profound or desired effect, depending on your objectives.

A sledgehammer won't do where a scalpel is needed. Vader probably could bring down a star destroyer if he wanted to, but it's not his style. He's got other means. ...As has been said, there was probably a more impressive unseen battle going on between him and Palpatine when he threw him down that shaft.

Oh, and I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough on certain points. (I do tend to branch off into speculation) I'm not insinuating that Han Solo can start picking up rocks with his mind. Just that he can be strong in the Force in his own way. Having the power of chance and being at the right place at the right time can be just as devastating an ability as being able to hurl bolts of energy from your hands. Everything is part of the Force, after all. Jedi aren't the only important parts.

Edit: Although, I will admit too, it would have been cool to see Anakin do this sort of stuff in Episode III.

Well now maybe they will.

I find it lovely people **** about Dorsk 81 and the Star Destroyer toss while they're now angry Vader doesn't do more like it.

Uh.

What?

Yes, I do get annoyed that a bunch of Jedi apprentices who haven't been studying any longer than a year can throw a WHOLE BUNCH of Star Destroyers out of a system. (though this can be explained away by the Force-strong nature of Yavin IV itself I suppose)

I wouldn't be annoyed to see Vader, the very experienced Dark Lord of the Sith and child of the Force itself being able to toss a single star destroyer about though - no. Though I'm a Vader fanboy, so that's to be expected.

Actually, it occurs to me now that Anakin had to have displayed that kind of power once in Episode III. Namely, when he was bringing (half of) Grevious' ship down for a landing. The engines of that thing were gone. I don't care how good he was at manipulating flaps, that thing should have turned a good portion of city into a smoking crater. There had to be some use of TK going on there.

Edit: And while it might not be as on grand a scale as shoving a star destroyer to the ground, if you take the Jedi Temple assault in the Episode III game as canon, Anakin pulled off some impressive stuff there.

Good point.

I think the novel actually makes this explicit, but I can't recall with any real clarity.

I'm looking at that passage in the book now, and it's a tad vague about the landing itself, although it tells about how he impossibly managed to maniplate the drag fins just correctly enough to make it's approach into Coruscant's atmosphere survivable...and that through the Force, he will make it land safely. It's easily implied that he takes a very direct approach in making the craft stop and NOT turn into a smear.

Goodness, looking over those few paragraphs make me want to read the book again. Just reading the short introduction is putting chills down my spine.

Stover said that landing the ship was simply impossible. But Anakin is good enough to do it anyways. I didn't see it as telekinesis so much as a simply superhuman piloting ability.

But he has only two levels in "Ace Pilot"!

Just how much training does it take to use Force Push? tongue

It's really no less believable than Kyp Durron, who had about two weeks of trianing, ripping the Sun Crusher from the heart of Yavin.

^ Well, it just about worked when we take the OT standalone.

The Prequels, however, with their Jedi who take at least 10 or-so-years to be trained.... (and that's with Anakin "the Best" Skywalker)

It's just a mess.

It doesn't matter how insane your piloting skills are; you can't fly a brick. That's what half of the ship became: a really big brick with drag fins. No engines, no wings, no landing gear, no nothing, and it was falling from orbit. Anakin could maneuver the thing so it didn't smash itself to pieces against Coruscant's atmosphere, but that's not going stop it from heading towards the ground really, really fast.

He had to slow it down somehow to a reasonable landing speed and make it slide onto that runway without becoming a smear...so I'm saying he used the Force.

Come on, man. He's the Chosen One. tongue

Heh.

I just realised that there's a very easy way to explain how the Secret Apprentice pulled that Star Destroyer down if you don't like the thought of TK being able to affect such massive objects.

He Force-hijacked the controls.

(Doesn't match up with the arm movements, but whatever wink )

Or he C'baothed the pilot, and those arm movements are him saying "come to me! COME TO ME!" ;-)
