But is there really going to BE a younger generation after this series? Jacen could die, and I don't think I'd want to see him redeemed, and I know I wouldn't want books to be dedicated about Zekk and Jaina. Too bad they killed Anakin...if they didn't then I could see them killing off Luke.

I would. Zekk and Jaina are both good characters, and they are great partners.

Anyway, I think many EU fans want Luke to die because (in theory) as long as he still lives, the younger generation of Jedi Knights (Jaina, Ben, Zekk, Tahiri, and so on) will never TRULY have a chance to shine, because they will always be outdone by the incredible Luke Skywalker.

In a sense, I can almost agree with them, because I have a number of friends and relatives who are Star Wars fans, but they don't know much about the EU. They know who Luke, Han and Leia are, but most don't even know who Mara Jade is! And they don't know the names of the three Solo kids. In these cases, I often have to explain it all to them. rolling_eyes

Personally, I think Luke can stick around for a little while longer, but the younger warriors need a chance to shine, and stand on their own feet without always running to the oldies for help. I think that will serve two purposes: allow more people to accept Luke Skywalker once again, and give more respect to characters that otherwise don't have it just yet (like Jaina, for instance).

Anyway, that's just my theory.

I could go for less of Luke but I don't want to see him struck down. Just make him more of a council figure. He can train Ben while Kyp, Corran and Jaina are given a bit more time in the limelight.. Yoda didn't take up his saber unless he absolutely had to and Luke could be similar. He doesn't have to run off everytime a problem appears, delegate some of that to the other council members.

My opinion was formed by a single conversation I had with a friend.

Friend: Hey, why didn't you tell me there were real Star Wars books.

Me: Huh?

Friend: Yeah, you directed me that NJO stuff.

Me: Yeah, it's the new...

Friend: Well I didn't come to read some glorified fanfic about Harry Potter's kids. There's a whole lot of books about the Star wars heroes.

Me: Well it's all Star Wars.

Friend: As George Lucas proved. No it isn't. Star Wars is about Luke, Leia, Han, and the Wookiee. Everything else is unimportant.

Me: They have some good video games.

Friend: Starring the heroes?

Me: I think you should give them a chance.

Friend: Do you have the books with the good guys or not?

Me: Yes.

Friend: Then gimme.

Me: You never read beyond the second book in the Dune series did you?

Friend: Hmmm?

For me, I wouldn't mind Luke being retired. However, I think that people who think killing Luke off is going to magically solve anything are fooling themselves. The reason that the Next Generation hasn't had a chance to shine is because they haven't had any supporting cast or story arcs equal to the original movie to develop them. Jacen Solo got some truly great moments but if he wasn't able to move out of Luke's Shadow in the entire NJO, his own Young Adult series, and Dark Nest then what chance did he ever have?

Well they can't keep writing about Luke, Han and Leia.

It's getting boring.

Next thing you know it, they are going to pull a Star Trek. "Re-Imagining" it all for the next generation. Then I would just want to shoot myself.

It's obviously not as boring as you think if their sales remain stable or even increase.

Mainly because no one wants to see a Luke Skywalker with hip surgery and a lightcane.

Jaina, Ben, Jag, Zekk, Tahiri, Mirta, Lowie, Syal, Tenel Ka, Allana. Looks to me like we could have a pretty decent cast of characters.

I agree. In that list alone, we've got 6 Jedi, 2 pilots, 1 future Jedi, and a Mandalorian. That's a pretty good list to me, and if they all survive post-LOTF, there's TONS of potential stories to write about them. And that's not including other characters any other members of the other families (Antilles, Fel, Horn, Sebatyne, etc.).

Luke's cool and all that, and I don't mind him sticking around for a while longer, but he's not the be all and end all of Star Wars. And that same rule applies to Han and Leia too.

Except for Ben and Jaina, the rest are second or even third tier characters that the average Joe Public Star Wars fan who doesn't participate in message boards would probably not be willing to purchase a book to read about, which I think is pretty much what C 19 was trying to say in his post. And none of those characters would be able to sustain the post-RotJ book franchise for the long haul.

With all due respect, the biggest problem of most of these characters is they're rip offs of existing characters or simply important because they're associations of bigger characters.

Lowbacca is a clone of Chewie, Tenel Ka is a clone of her mother who wasn't even a star to begin with, Syal and Allana aren't even characters, Ben Skywalker is Luke Skywalker's son or I doubt anyone would care about the little Hitler Youth member, Jaina is also well.....a trifle cardboard. Zekk is just Jaina's boyfriend as his only defining feature.

it's like replacing the cast of the Lord of the Rings with Samwise Gamgee's kids.

Or for a more telling example, Kevin J. Anderson's original Dune characters.

And it's a shame almost none of them have been used properly in order to increase their potential to become main characters. Misused and abused.

I find it surreal that there's only one Star Wars Children's character that can sustain his own book. All thanks to a joke story by Greg Keyes.

Uldir Lochett

However, even I would think it ridiculous that most Star Wars fans have even HEARD of the guy let alone would read a series about his awesome adventures.

I love Alex Winger and think she's a 1000x better than Tenel Ka. However, I doubt we'll ever see a book about her.
