Ahh if Excellence were about, he'd tell you that the mere two pages spent on the Yoda/Sidious fight is laughable.

But seriously, it was nice to see a Jedi that isn't tearing through hordes of enemies page after page. It humanised THE prequel trilogy character that needed it most. There wasn't enough about him explored. Facts and folklore, but no deeper characterisation.

Shatterpoint made me like Mace Windu.

Shatterpoint for me was Stover's best work without question. Sure ROTS is good but it pales to the impact Shatterpoint had. This book shows exactly what the Clone Wars exist to do, how and why yet also affirms why the Jedi do what they do. They lose? Of course they lose, the game was set so they could only lose. Shatterpoint was the 1st Clone Wars book, it had to set the standard and it did - too bad the rest of CW never matched it. It also took the realistic style being deployed by DR to its ultimate extension, after Shatterpoint anything would pale in comparison.

I can't stand it. I was expecting Full Metal Jacket or Apocalypse Now with lightsabers and I end up with nothing like it. It just felt limp and I was thoroughly disappointed.

What's really weird is the former is exactly what we got....

....and which was surprising because I never thought for a second they'd publish anything like that.

If I were trapped on a desert island and could bring with me but one Stover novel, it would be a toss up between Shatterpoint and Heroes Die.

Stover is the most entertaining writer ever. If I could write like him, I would sit at home and write stories just for myself.

Ex hates Shatterpoint with a passion, mention him we will not. I find his lack of faith disturbing.

Shatterpoint rocks! IMHO it's one of the most violent EU books as well as one of the most profane. What about all those Mace Windu cowboy scenes, he all but says "This planet ain't big enough for the two of us."

I love Nick Rostu, he's actually a lot like a guy I iknow who is also named Nick and hasn't read Shatterpoint.

I just love Mace's line at the end of the final fight.

"It seems that I'm the last one standing." Or something to that effect.

Me too. He's got one of my favorite writing styles. His books are violent, but his almost poetic writing style seems to balance out the more bloody parts.

I've went looking for some of his other novels, but none of the stores I visit have any of his stuff.

And, IIRC, Stover's the only SW author to use the word crap. Useless tidbit there. tongue

Stover is the best author ever. You can quote me.

I'm an unabashed Stover worshipper.

Anyways, TRAITOR got my hooked onto MWS, then I read Shatterpoint. It rocked my world, so I read HEROES DIE.
Oh My God. Heroes Die and Blade of Tyshalle are literally the greatest books I've ever read.

The only thing I have against Stover is the way he acted in Star Wars on Trial. He reminded me of a misinformed and deluded fan trying to pilot the sinking ship of a pathetic point of view.

I think Matt Stover was responding to the ridiculousness of many of the assertations.

You could actually do a very in-depth essay on Star Wars and culture.

However, that was definitely not the tone of the book.

Hence, why he acted like he was acid.

He didn;t have to act like that.

And I might do that essay, I already wrote one about Vergere and Jacen thinking

Actually, most of the assertions were pretty dead-on. Brin's line of critique is certainly not unique to him, and it represents a really reasonable critical approach to Star Wars.

Of course, you could deliver an equally withering critique of his beloved Star Trek, and he seems pretty oblivious to that.
