How does anyone know that this Shadows on Mindor book is going to be any good? I've been hearing a whole lot of this on these boards & I don't understand it.

When is it coming out?

it's about Luke as a New Republic General (with help from Mandolorians and the Rouges) vs a Dark Jedi called Shadowspawn and his personal army that fights to the last man. it's a battle that is so terrible that it apparently causes Luke to resign his NR officer's commision and focuses on becoming a Jedi full time.

it's being written by Stover, who's three SW books (Shatterpoint, ROTS, and Traitor) are among the best according to many people's opinions.

it's set in in the year 5ABY, about 1.5 years after Endor.

it comes out in October 2008.

#1 It's about the battle on Mindor, between the Alliance led by Luke and also including the Rogues, with help from Fenn Shysa and Mandalorian Protectors against Lord Shadowspawn and his forces of shadow stormtroopers, essentially it was a pretty horrific battle all round.

#2 Matthew Stover - the main reason we are saying this will be awesome

#3 It's set 5.5 ABY IIRC

#4 Think it was originally slated for Feb 08 but TFU is now there, so think it's pushed back to around Oct 08.

EDIT - Too slow tongue

Thanks all for the quick answers!

Of course I'm down with LS&tSoM cause of the Mando's & Stover, but I've also been dying for a book that that takes place in the past when Luke was less of a wuss & before the Solo's were tied down with kids. I suppose Winter will make a cameo cause she's got the twin babies hidden on some far off planet & it'll be cool to see her too. Chewie'll be back! Lord Shadowspawn is mildly interesting, but if I remember correctly this whole story is part of the Marvel comics run that I can't find anywhere in the comic shops but that I have read plenty of about on the wookie. I'm definately going to get this!

I feel bad that I've been out of the loop about this book for so long, thanks for letting me know what's up. Now this whole waiting thing.....it's going to be kinda painful. sad

Welcome to the bandwagon wink

I'm really looking forward to this book as well, it's Stover (which is probably enough in itself), he's writing Luke during a horrific battle, there's rogues (maybe with Baron Fel) and hopefully there'll be Mandalorians and Fenn Shysa's first novel appearance. What's not to like, other than having to wait more than a year to read it.

That Shadows of Mindnor sounds freaking awesome.

And it's about Luke Skywalker, so Stover is free to make Luke drop a freakin Star Destroyer on top of fools if he wants too.

LOL

And I can't wait for his third Caine novel. Blade of Tyshalle was mindblowing.

Despite the excessive blood and gore which really has no place in Star Wars, the depiction of Mace Windu was pretty much what I would consider the model Jedi Knight to be (prior to Obi-Wan in the ROTS novelization).

Basically, think Qui-Gon in TPM (the movie) in novelization form. happy

I remember most of the garbage from the Marvel days, and I seem to recall that Lucas slapped a big ass "DO NOT DISTURB" on anything set outside of the movie timeline. Until The Thrawn Trilogy.

For me, I'm interested in knowing what people think caused Depa to go into her coma.

BTW, this thread inspired me to re-read the book.

Marvel was actually the first to cover the time after ROTJ. And for modern EU, DE was the first to get the go-ahead for post-ROTJ, though TTT was published first.

I actually just read this novel for the first time. Oh my lord, that is an amazing book. It's so unlike any Star Wars book I've ever read (mind you, I haven't started NJO yet, so no Traitor). It's great to see a book set in the fantastical world of Star Wars that treats war as a real thing.

And it has the distinction of carrying the phrase "We are well and truly forked."

So, as everyone has already said, great Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now treatment of a Star Wars story.

And I can't wait until Shadows of Mindor comes out. I didn't realize that that was the battle that caused Luke to resign. That'll be interesting.

QFT. I just finished the novel (already having read Stover's other 2 SW books) as well and was blown away by its sheer awesomeness. If more SW novels were written like this -- and i don't necessarily mean the dark tone fo the story, but that the story is told in a serious and real manner, allowing for open interpretations and allegorical representations of the real-world -- then SW lit as a whole would be taken much more seriously than it is by the mainstream (or even by the fantasy lit genere as a whole).

But i MUST know what becomes of Kar Vastor. IMO, one of the greatest original EU characters in a while, even if he is basically a mirror for Mace. Nick Rostu was also a great original character, bringing a touch of the comic side of SW to the novel while still remaining a strong, competent character.

Stover FTW. cool

EDIT: A thought -- if Mace wasn't played by Sam Jackson in the films, would his character still have been developed to be the bad motherkriffer that he is? Or was that characterization in place before Sam ever signed on for TPM? confused

Depa going off into her coma like that was the only letdown in that book of win. I think it was a cop-out on LFL's part so that we didn't have to see the re-education of a Jedi Master gone dark. I mean she never specifically went Sith, just sorta lost her way in the midst of a bloody war, but for her to have remained alive & active after the whole ordeal would've been giving page time for redemption to a character that LFL obviously didn't think was popular enough to deserve it.

She's a female member of the Jedi Council & it seems to me that even here at the dawn of the new millenium, Star Wars is just as misogynistic as ever. An old lady Jedi Librarian & nearly nekkid Twilek got more screen time that all the other female Jedi combined in the movies. I also think that secondly, Depa has a vaugely Middle Eastern feminine appearance with the skin color, facial composition & that dot in the middle of her head. It was probably with that knowledge still a bit of an unconscious decision to make her the bad girl of Shatterpoint.

Anyways, I just didn't like her falling off into a coma like that, thought it was pretty weak. It's against everything it is to be a vilain, to just pass out like some kinda Rip Van Winkle. We either go from bad to worse to death or if we're lucky we're found by someone that cares enough about us to give us a chance at redemption. At least at the end of Shatterpoint I could see Kar Vastor punching up the walls of his cell & using mind tricks to kill neophyte Jedi/guards that he lures into trusting him. With Depa, I get nothing...
