Oh, also: At one point, Motti's "rough draft" name of Zi gets left in. Probably a mistake, but as he's talking with a friend at the time, I guess it could be a nickname.

I'm sure it'll get fixed in the paperback edition.

Or, y'know, they'll give us an article about how "Zi" is actually High Galactic for Conan or something.

I'm about 60 pages into it and I have to say that it's pretty good so far. Very different from what we usually get, which is great.

I was already suspecting some author would take the rough draft name and make it a nickname, even without the accidental reference left in the book, so since it WAS left in, I don't think it's that outlandish an explanation.

I just finished it, and the last half of the book really went by fast. It was nice to see what was going on inside Vader's and Tarkin's heads during those scenes from ANH.

>from now on, all novels should go through continuity screening from Dan, Pablo, AND Abel, to avoid dumb mistakes like this. we need some authors who are also fans;)<

They did have some great stuff worthy of that elite trio, though. There's a nice reference to Manda and the Baobab Archives there. (Though I suppose that shouldn't have been surprising, considering that Reaves wrote for Droids...) The events of Battlefront II are mentioned a couple times, including a hilarious mention of the prison break level. The question of just when Despayre was destroyed is answered; as is the question of why Alderaan's destruction exceeded their expectations for planetary destruction in the radio drama when the Death Star had already blown up Despayre. And, as a bonus in the same fix, a reconcilation between the jungle-like description of Despayre in Darksaber and its barren appearance in X-Wing.

All right, I got this novel today, read through it in about five hours. Whilst it wasn't as bad as some made it out to be, I don't believe it merited a hardcover.

Some things that struck me:
*Tenn's storyline was perhaps my favorite. I always was interested how the people firing the superlaser felt.
*Uli's inclusion was nice, if his turning rebel was something I could see coming a mile away.
*The scenes in the Heard Heart reminded me of a novelized version of Elton John's "Piano Man".
*The librarian guy had waaay too few page time to merit being a DP character (Motti shares this distinction as well, but since his character was so interesting, it's forgivable).
*The mention of "little green beings on Crystan V" intrigued me as well. Someone should ask Leland Chee about that.
*Briefing scene as perceived by Motti: genius idea. I don't think I ever saw that scene in such a humorous light.
*The fact that the authors didn't do their research regarding the Death Star Troopers kinda annoyed me, but it didn't hit me over the head until it identified Sergeant Stihl as one of the stormies chasing Han and Chewie.
*Tagge and Bast outrank Motti?? So much for the whole command triumvirate theory.
*For that matter, have we ever gotten a name for that group of officers at the meeting? I've always called them the Death Star Command Staff, but I have no delusions that that is canon.
* Page 128 (or 129, I forget which). So, the Zelosion is masquerading as "Teh Roxxor." Are you freakin' kidding me?

And that's about it so far. More to come as it springs to mind.

>*Tagge and Bast outrank Motti?? So much for the whole command triumvirate theory.<

BTW, I think it's high time we got an explanation for all these Basts. Something like:

General Bast: High-ranking Imperial on the Death Star, and clone doner.

Chief Bast. An operations lieutenant who escaped the Death Star, and served under Vader. Clone of Bast.

Bast. Also clone of Bast. Remained on the Death Star in Chief Bast's place when it was destroyed.

See, wouldn't that solve everything? wink

Here's a passage I liked:

At the end of the bar, a pair of CPOs were talking about a rumored prison break in the detention area. Memah overheard one of them say, "Way I heard it, nine guys broke out, one of them a Jedi."

The other petty officer laughed. "Hate to point it out, but Jedi are real scace these days."

"Just telling the story, Tenn."

"Yeah, I heard it too. Only I heard it was fifty guys, all captured Rebels, led by five Jedi. And they took over the superlaser and started blasting Star Destroyers. 'Course, the big gun isn't even operational yet. Anyone knows that, it's me. But hey, why let facts get in the way of a good story?"

The first chief laughed and sipped at his ale. "Sounds almost like a sim run, don't it? A real wacky sim run."

The second CPO said "Time this war's over, want to bet that story'll have a Rebel army nearly destroying the station? Ever action I ever been in, stories like that pop up. One floop spits on the slidewalk, by the end of the cycle it's turned into a crack unit of Rebels knocking over a fortress."

The first chief laughed again. "Yeah. Next they'll be saying it took the Five Hundred and First to put 'em down."

wink

I just finished it. I enjoyed it, especially where it meshed in with ANH. It was a welcome break from the angst of the Solo and Skywalker offspring in LOTF.
I do agree that it would have been better as a paperback - I don't think it was good enough to justify being a hardcover. Having said that, I got mine from Amazon so I didn't pay full price for it (and I got free shipping).

TC, although I did consider that explanation (Bast being cloned), the problem with it is that Bast always wears the same insignia, ie, the General's insignia, and never a lieutenant's insignia, so your explanation would create its own problems

Oh, so Bast really has been wearing a General's rank in ANH all along? I didn't know--until now I'd always heard him called "Chief" Bast, so I just assumed he had a lower rank. Ah well. I still think we could use at least one Bast clone.

>I just finished it. I enjoyed it, especially where it meshed in with ANH. It was a welcome break from the angst of the Solo and Skywalker offspring in LOTF.<

Amen to that!

>I do agree that it would have been better as a paperback - I don't think it was good enough to justify being a hardcover.<

Huh. I keep hearing this, and yet off the top of my head I can think of very few SW hardcovers that were worth the hardcover price. The ROTS novel is the most recent one that comes to mind. I don't think they pick what books get to be hardcovers based on quality. I wouldn't have minded paying hardcover price for Dark Rendezvous, and yet I can't believe I paid so much for Jedi Trial. Oh well--you win some, you lose some.

I thought Shatterpoint, the RoTS and AOTC novels, LOTF: Sacrifice and Labyrinth of Evil were worth HC prices. Maybe The Unifying Force as well since it wrapped up the NJO.

When I read that particular passage in the book, I think I mentally filed it away as being due to Tarkin's state of mind at the time.

Yeah, Tarkin didn't really acknowledge who it was who told him the station was in danger. He was too focused on the countdown.
