RE: The Official Death Star Novel Thread (Spoilers Allowed)
I'm about 75 pages in right now, mostly due to an abundance of work this week, and I'm really liking the everyman characters. Its a side of Star Wars we haven't seen in awhile and while its not
Tales of the Death Star
, it's very similar up to this point.
I really wish they would do a better job editing though.

RE: The Official Death Star Novel Thread (Spoilers Allowed)
>are there any prequels references or at least a feel?<
Many; the doctor from MedStar is himself a prequel character, and so brings memories of the Clone Wars to the table; the cantina owner, too, compares the well-mannered Jango clone troopers to the more rowdy and unpredictable stormtrooper conscripts, the Death Star gunner lists General Grievous among the genocidal beings he compares himself to, the Geonosian contributions to the Death Star plans are directly referenced and also implied in the original crew quarter designs, Gungans are mentioned a few times--at least one of them worked on the Death Star, and Vader thinks back on Padme and Mustafar several times....the list just goes on and on. It works well to bridge the two trilogies, actually.

RE: The Official Death Star Novel Thread (Spoilers Allowed)
I only managed to skim through the book at a store once (going back to reread it later), but does Ackbar appear at all or is mentioned? I remember Darksaber had a flashback scene of Tarkin's shuttle under attack, and Ackbar being freed, but not sure if the book would cover that time period or not. Unless that's been retconned, and I just haven't noticed. I still applaud the book for at least trying to untangle the continuity mess that was the Death Star's story. Maw Installation, Sienar, Geonosians, Daala (and convenient head injuries), whoa, that's a lot of continuity references. Even if not all of it is quite correct, but I like that its remembered.
Too bad they can't make A Death Star is Born canon, though.
Just joking, of course.

Ackbar makes no appearance whatsoever, and is not mentioned either. This was one major disappointment in the novel for me.

Yeah; no Ackbar. It's probably just as well, though, because the game manual for X-Wing said that he wasn't able to learn anything of significance about the Death Star project.

Still, it would have been nice to see the part where Tarkin and Lemelisk are almost assassinated and Ackbar gets rescued.

True, but we did see that in Darksaber and X-Wing anyway. The authors would have had to break the narrative to have Tarkin go back to Eraidu and pick up Ackbar...it would have been nice to see that connected with all the other Rebel activity in the book. Did anyone else think that the sabotuer would turn out to be one of the main characters, like in MedStar? I was surprised when they never showed us who exactly was responsible for it all.

So is it safe to say that Ackbar was on Eriadu for the majority of the novel? I was under the impression that Ackbar and Tarkin were virtually inseparable during Ackbar's slavery.

Couldn't this arguably be set after Ackbar was freed? Or does X-wing lock the timeline down much closer than Darksaber suggested?

Darksaber says Ackbar was rescued shortly before Tarkin was informed that the Death Star plans were on Toprawa. So only a few days before ANH started.

RE: The Official Death Star Novel Thread (Spoilers Allowed)
A little interesting tidbit I noticed while perusing an old children's book I picked up from Goodwill the other day. It was one of the books in the old Choose Your Own Adventure spinoff series, Time Machine. The particular book I got was written by no one I'd ever heard of, but while looking through the list of other Time Machine books in the front, I ran across some familiar names:
Sword of the Samurai, by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry
It seems this is not the first time these two have collaborated. ;-)

>So is it safe to say that Ackbar was on Eriadu for the majority of the novel? I was under the impression that Ackbar and Tarkin were virtually inseparable during Ackbar's slavery.<
Pretty much, and while it's true that Ackbar did seem to be pretty much Tarkin's valet, the X-Wing game manual and the Farlander Papers stated that Ackbar was unable to determine the exact nature of Tarkin's Death Star project--so having him touring the construction site in the novel, or assuming that he was there, would be a bit of a problem.
>Couldn't this arguably be set after Ackbar was freed? Or does X-wing lock the timeline down much closer than Darksaber suggested? <
Farther apart, actually. As timosphere pointed out, Darksaber closely puts Ackbar's rescue very close to ANH, but this doesn't jive with X-Wing, which has Ackbar serving the Rebel Alliance for some time before the battle, though it does establish his capture by Rebel forces in pretty much the same fashion as Darksaber. TNEGTC and TNEC just placed time inbetween the two events--there's a longer time between Ackbar's capture and the Toprawa mission than Bevel's flashback in Darksaber would suggest.
