Let me start off saying that the search function on this board is infuriating ... i know there's been a recent LotJ thread so i went looking for that rather than starting a new one, but everytime i try to use the search function, it just reloads the search page and does nothing! frustrated Anyhoo ...

A little while back i had picked up the first two books in this series, primarily for the Obi-Wan-ness. I finally got around to reading them this week (just about finished with #2), and have enjoyed them a good deal. It was the "Legacy/Secrets of the Jedi" volume that encouraged me to check them out as i found Watson's writing, while obviously for a younger reader market, was actually pretty decent for storytelling purposes.

So, to finally get to the point tongue -- unless i'm mistaken, LotJ #2 marks the end of Obi-Wan's appearances in the series. Now i'm debating whether to go ahead and pick up the rest of the series anyway. The era (Dark Times) is one that i'm decently interested in, and that encourages me somewhat. But how are the stories themselves? Good? Mediocre? Bad? As i've said, the young-reader writing style isn't a bother to me, and i can deal with the "Ferus was the greatest Padawan EVAR!!!1!! Well except Anakin, but Ferus knew better than everyone that Anakin would go dark all along!" stuff (which i do find irritating, but only slightly). I'm really more curious about the actual stories themselves, whether they're worth reading.

Opinions?

If you liked the first couple of them, I'd read the rest. I think Watson is pretty comfortable with Ferus as an OC and she'd doing a decent job of looking at a former Padawan who has had to deal with real life and all that has happened. Right now, in #8, Obi-Wan shows up at the end of the book and Ferus is dealing with darkside issues. I think it's still a spoiler so I highlighted it in black.

In addition, she's looking at the problems of setting up a rebellion and the Jedi trying to stay alive.

I have them all.

You might actually have an advantage reading them all back to back, as the series generates a rather large cast of secondary characters, mostly resistance fighters. Picking the story up after 6 months is a bit hard, but I'd say that it is by far more cohesive than JA or JQ as far as the story goes. And Watson is still keeping her own little universe of Jedi and other characters together, which is great. I mean, JA had lots of adventures, JQ showed how places and people from these adventures were affected by the growing darkness in the galaxy, and now we find out how everyone actually keeps up in the darkness.

Jacen had learned that one can meet the Universe [...] with fear, or with hatred, or with despair.
Or one can choose to meet it with love.
Jacen had chosen.
But still, he was astonished to discover that the Universe could love him back.

Thanks! peace

I'll probably end up picking them up -- especially since, as a general rule, whenever i start to consider whether i should pick up a certain SW novel or series i hadn't intended on buying before, i inevitably get it. Ahh, SW lit addiction ... grin

I did note just in reading 1 & 2 that i would probably have been annoyed if i had to wait between the two, as #2 picks up (almost to the sentence) immediately where #1 ends.

BTW, i was aware of ... the spoiler posted above, but knew that if i was going to pick up a much later book in the series, i'd be annoyed at myself for not picking up the ones inbetween.

I am reading Death on Naboo right now. I like the stories even though they are simple. They get right to the story. Do these stories exist in the actual Star Wars realm or is it Non-Canon. I mean they talk about things in upcoming novels and I wonder if they are stories happening in the same reality.

They're canon all the way (even though they are juvenile)...

It does have the first Gay character which is an interesting venue. I guess he is...has that been confirmed. Not that there is anything wrong with it.

Not confirmed. Actually, I think that his possible gay-ness is something as completely unintentional as it is obvious. Sort of like the Ryan/Chad subtext in High School Musical 2.

people can love friends of the same gender without it being anything romantic or erotic. there is no indication of homosexuality unless you want to read that into it.

I haven't seen any indication of homosexuality in the LotJ books. Are you talking about Ferus and Roan? They're just close friends, almost brothers who have been through a lot together.
